Unified Approach to Modeling and Simulation of Space Communication Networks and Systems

Network simulator software tools are often used to model the behaviors and interactions of applications, protocols, packets, and data links in terrestrial communication networks. Other software tools that model the physics, orbital dynamics, and RF characteristics of space systems have matured to allow for rapid, detailed analysis of space communication links. However, the absence of a unified toolset that integrates the two modeling approaches has encumbered the systems engineers tasked with the design, architecture, and analysis of complex space communication networks and systems. This paper presents the unified approach and describes the motivation, challenges, and our solution - the customization of the network simulator to integrate with astronautical analysis software tools for high-fidelity end-to-end simulation. Near-Optimal Distributed Linear-Quadratic Regulator for Networked Systems

This paper studies the trade-off between the degree of decentralization and the performance of a distributed controller in a linear-quadratic control setting. We study a system of interconnected agents over a graph and a distributed controller, called k-distributed control, which lets the agents make control decisions based on the state information within distance k on the underlying graph. This controller can tune its degree of decentralization using the parameter k and thus allows a characterization of the relationship between decentralization and performance. We show that under mild assumptions, including stabilizability, detectability, and a subexponentially growing graph condition, the performance difference between k-distributed control and centralized optimal control becomes exponentially small in k. Finally, this result reveals that distributed control can achieve near-optimal performance with a moderate degree of decentralization, and thus it is an effective controller architecture for large-scale networked systems.

A Comparison Between Publish-and-Subscribe and Client-Server Models in Distributed Control System Networks

The BIO-Plex control system requires real-time, flexible, and reliable data delivery. There is no simple "off-the-shelf 'solution. However, several commercial packages will be evaluated using a testbed at ARC for publish- and-subscribe and client-server communication architectures. Point-to-point communication architecture is not suitable for real-time BIO-Plex control system. Client-server architecture provides more flexible data delivery. However, it does not provide direct communication among nodes on the network. Publish-and-subscribe implementation allows direct information exchange among nodes on the net, providing the best time-critical communication. In this work Network Data Delivery Service (NDDS) from Real-Time Innovations, Inc. ARTIE will be used to implement publish-and subscribe architecture. It offers update guarantees and deadlines for real-time data delivery. Bridgestone, a data acquisition and control software package from National Instruments, will be tested for client-server arrangement. A microwave incinerator located at ARC will be instrumented with a fieldbus network of control devices. BridgeVIEW will be used to implement an enterprise server. An enterprise network consisting of several nodes at ARC and a WAN connecting ARC and RISC will then be setup to evaluate proposed control system architectures. Several network configurations will be evaluated for fault tolerance, quality of service, reliability and efficiency. Data acquired from these network evaluation tests will then be used to determine preliminary design criteria for the BIO-Plex distributed control system.

Towards the Development of a Multi-Agent Cognitive Networking System for the Lunar Environment

This paper details the development of a multi-agent cognitive system intended to optimize networking performance in the lunar environment. NASA’s current concept of the future of lunar communication, LunaNet [1], outlines a complex network of networks. Challenges such as scalability, interoperability and reliability must first be addressed to successfully fulfill this vision. Machine intelligence can greatly reduce the reliance on human operators and enable efficient operations for tasks such as scheduling and network management. The application of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other automated decision-making techniques can be used to allow network nodes to intelligently sense and adapt to changes in the environment such as link disruptions, new nodes joining the network, and support for a diverse range of protocols. Cognitive networking seeks to evolve these technologies into an autonomous system with improved science data return, reliability, and scalability. In this paper, we study three main areas a means to further develop cognitive networking capabilities: networking and flight software development, analysis of wireless data for modeling and simulation, and development of algorithms for a multi-agent system.

Integration of SPS with utility system networks

The integration of Satellite Power System (SPS) power in electric utility power systems is discussed. Specifically, the nature of the power output variations from the spacecraft to the rectenna, the operational characteristics of the rectenna power, and the impacts on the electric utility system from utilizing SPS power to serve part of the system load are treated. It is concluded that if RF beam control is an acceptable method for power control, and that the site distribution of SPS rectennas do not cause a very high local penetration (40 to 50%), SPS may be integrated into electric utility system with a few negative impacts. Increased regulating duty on the conventional generation, and a potential impact on system reliability for SPS penetration in excess of about 25% appear to be two areas of concern.

DeepGraphONet: A Deep Graph Operator Network to Learn and Zero-Shot Transfer the Dynamic Response of Networked Systems

This article develops a deep graph operator network (DeepGraphONet) framework that learns to approximate the dynamics of a complex system (e.g., the power grid or traffic) with an underlying subgraph structure. Here, we build our DeepGraphONet by fusing the ability of graph neural networks to exploit spatially correlated graph information and deep operator networks to approximate the solution operator of dynamical systems. The resulting DeepGraphONet can then predict the dynamics within a given short/medium-term time horizon by observing a finite history of the graph state information. Furthermore, we design our DeepGraphONet to be resolution independent. That is, we do not require the finite history to be collected at the exact/same resolution. In addition, to disseminate the results from a trained DeepGraphONet, we design a zero-shot learning strategy that enables using it on a different subgraph. Finally, empirical results on the transient stability prediction problem of power grids and traffic flow forecasting problem of a vehicular system illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed DeepGraphONet.

Optimization with artificial neural network systems - A mapping principle and a comparison to gradient based methods

General formulae for mapping optimization problems into systems of ordinary differential equations associated with artificial neural networks are presented. A comparison is made to optimization using gradient-search methods. The performance measure is the settling time from an initial state to a target state. A simple analytical example illustrates a situation where dynamical systems representing artificial neural network methods would settle faster than those representing gradient-search. Settling time was investigated for a more complicated optimization problem using computer simulations. The problem was a simplified version of a problem in medical imaging: determining loci of cerebral activity from electromagnetic measurements at the scalp. The simulations showed that gradient based systems typically settled 50 to 100 times faster than systems based on current neural network optimization methods.

Spaceport Command and Control System: Network Engineering

The Spaceport Command and Control System (SCCS) project's goal is to facilitate the checkout and launch of NASA's next generation SLS vehicle in order to enable human exploration through deep space. SCCS is made up of complex software that will control and monitor the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft. Once it is fully developed, SCCS will be a large improvement to previous software since it takes advantage of modern computers and information making it faster and more reliable than the software used previously on the Shuttle program. The software will be tailored to the specific needs of the Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion spacecraft. These three projects will be brought together for the launch of Exploration Mission-1.

Power System Network Reduction for Power Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation: Preprint

This paper proposes a single-port equivalent and a two-port equivalent to respectively reduce single-port and two-port areas in a large power network. Parameters of the reduced systems are rigorously derived, which guarantees that the electrical quantities at the port remain unchanged over the reduction, including voltage magnitude and phase, active and reactive power injections into the area to be reduced. The proposed techniques are applied to reduce a practical Maui grid, where the total numbers of buses, lines and transformers are respectively reduced from 212, 106 and 108 to 45, 30 and 13. Dynamic behaviors between the full model and the reduced model are compared in detail to illustrate the efficacy and accuracy of the proposed network reduction.
