Utah FORGE Well 16A(78)-32 Simplified Discrete Fracture Network Data

The FORGE team is making these fracture models available to researchers wanting a set of natural fractures in the FORGE reservoir for use in their own modeling work. They have been used to predict stimulation distances during hydraulic stimulation at the open toe section of well 16A(78)-32. This is a simplified DFN (discrete fracture network) dataset, that was generated using FracMan, for Utah FORGE well 16A(78)-32. A short, well-illustrated, report describing the data is also included in the provided archive file.

Probing the D-region ionosphere globally with Earth Networks Total Lightning Network data

An existing technique to use broadband lightning waveforms to probe the D-region ionosphere (60–90 km altitude) is shown to be extendable to a global scale using the Earth Networks Total Lightning Network (ENTLN). This paper demonstrates the technique in detail on a region of the Southeastern United States. This demonstration shows that diurnal D-region height variation and smaller time-scale variations on the order of tens of minutes to hours are evident in the measurement. The technique is then extended to three additional global regions on this same day: Northeastern U.S., India, and Japan. The diurnal behavior between these different regions is compared to a D-region model from the International Reference Ionosphere.

Evaluating Named Data Networking for Industrial Control System [Slides]

Current proposed work is: See if the inherent security that comes with Named Networking (NDN) can be applied to Industrial Control Systems; and, Every packet is required to be cryptographically signed which makes every single piece of data communicated in the system secure and authenticated.

Named Data Networking for DER Cybersecurity

We present our research findings on the novel NDN protocol. In this work, we defined key attack scenarios for possible exploitation and detail software security testing procedures to evaluate the security of the NDN software. This work was done in the context of distributed energy resources (DER). The software security testing included an execution of unit tests and static code analyses to better understand the software rigor and the security that has been implemented. The results from the penetration testing are presented. Recommendations are discussed to provide additional defense for secure end-to-end NDN communications.

Integration and Quantitative Comparison of Up-Scaled Molecular Observation Network Data with Existing Soil Databases

MONet provides novel soil molecular data to the research community for understanding biogeochemical processes and complementing other soil datasets. This study assesses MONet's ability to replicate known soil patterns via a comparative analysis of soil respiration (Rs), pH, and clay content against benchmark datasets. Results show moderate agreement for pH and clay content, highlighting MONet's strengths in capturing soil biogeochemical variation in underrepresented regions like urban areas. Rs data are marked by the appropriate trends relative to other datasets, but direct comparison is impractical due to methodological differences in underlying data. Strategic sampling is recommended to improve MONet's coverage and eventual utility in bridging molecular observations with global datasets.

A General Method for Estimating Zonal Transmission Interface Limits from Nodal Network Data: Preprint

Capacity expansion models for the electric power system often employ zonal (rather than nodal) resolution, necessitating estimates of aggregate power transfer limits across the interfaces between model zones. Interface limits between planning areas are sometimes published, but they are not generalizable to arbitrary zone shapes. There is thus a need for a reproducible method for estimating interface transfer limits (ITLs) between user-defined zones directly from nodal transmission system data. Here, we present a simple method for estimating ITLs using a DC power flow approximation via the power transfer distribution factor (PTDF) matrix. Linear optimization is performed to identify the distribution of power flows that maximizes the total flow on interface-crossing lines, subject to individual line ratings, limits on bus injection/withdrawal, and the relationships among flows, injections, and withdrawals imposed by the PTDF matrix. We demonstrate the application of the method on a 134-zone ~65000-bus system, and we explore the influence of flow direction, contingency level, and zone size on the estimated ITLs. There is significant heterogeneity in the ratio of the ITL to the sum of interface-crossing line ratings, which highlights the importance of accounting for the physical constraints on power flows imposed by Kirchhoff's laws when estimating zonal ITLs.

High-density, fail-in-place switches for computer and data networks

A structure for a network switch. The network switch may include a plurality of spine chips arranged on a plurality of spine cards, where one or more spine chips are located on each spine card; and a plurality of leaf chips arranged on a plurality of leaf cards, wherein one or more leaf chips are located on each leaf card, where each spine card is connected to every leaf chip and the plurality of spine chips are surrounded on at least two sides by leaf cards.
