Shock tube study of ionization rates of NaCl-contaminated argon

Electron density, electron temperature, and concentration of excited sodium atoms are measured in the weakly ionized regime behind a shock wave in impure argon in a shock tube using microwave techniques and spectrally resolved radiometry. Evidence is presented to show that an apparent increase in the rate of ionization is due to electron detachment of negative chlorine ions produced from sodium chloride vapor contained as an impurity. To be consistent with this chemical model, rate coefficients are found in the temperature range between 5500 and 8600 K for the dissociation of NaCl into an ion pair, dissociation of NaCl into a neutral pair, and electron detachment of a negative chlorine ion. Electron temperature is lower than heavy-particle temperature by roughly 1000 K. The electron-argon impact-ionization rate coefficient is a weak function of electron temperature in contradiction to expectation.

Zero-gravity growth of NaF-NaCl eutectics in the NASA Skylab program

Continuous and discontinuous NaF fibers, embedded in a NaCl matrix, were produced in space and on earth. The production of continuous fibers in a eutectic mixture is attributed to the absence of convection current in the liquid during solidification in space. Image transmission and optical transmittance measurements of transverse sections of the space-grown and earth-grown ingots were made with a light microscope and a spectrometer. It is shown that better optical properties were obtained from samples grown in space. This was attributed to a better alignment of NaF fibers along the ingot axis. A new concept is advanced to explain the phenomenon of transmittance versus far infrared wavelength of the directionally solidified NaCl-NaF eutectic in terms of the two-dimensional Bragg Scattering and the polarization effect of Rayleigh scattering. This concept can be applied to other eutectic systems as long as the index of refraction of the matrix over a range of wavelengths is known. Experimental data are in agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Volatile products in the corrosion of Cr, Mo, Ti and four superalloys exposed to O2 containing H2O and gaseous NaCl

Cooled target collection techniques were used to study the formation of volatile products when samples of Cr, Ti, IN-738, 713C, NASA-TRW VIA and B-1900 were exposed, at elevated temperatures, to oxidizing environments containing H2O(g) and NaCl(g). Samples were heated to 1050 C in one atmosphere of slowly flowing oxygen, saturated with water at 21 C, and containing about 50 ppm NaCl(g). Volatile products were detected for all materials except B-1900 and Ti. High pressure mass spectrometric sampling was used to directly identify volatile products emanating from samples of Cr and IN-738 subject to the above environments.

Structure and orientation of small particles of platinum deposited on NaCl and mica

The structure of small platinum particles condensed in vacuum onto NaCl (001), NaCl (111) and mica substrates was studied by electron diffraction and electron microscopy. Results show that above a certain substrate temperature decahedral or icosahedral particles are formed. These particles are practically absent with substrates cleaved in high vacuum. They are always much less numerous than in gold films prepared under the same conditions. Assumptions made to explain this phenomenon are: (1) the initial growth of an abnormal structure of the nuclei as opposed by the substrate; (2) the particles disappear before they attain a size which corresponds to the observations; and (3) the particles result from a coalescence mechanism leading to multiple twinned particles.

The reduction of chlorine on carbon in AlCl3-KCl-NaCl melts

Using a rotating vitreous carbon disk electrode, the kinetic parameters for chlorine reduction in an AlCl3-KCl-NaCl (57.5-12.5-30 mol percent) melt were determined. It was found that the reduction of chlorine occurs according to two paths, with the first step probably being rate-determining.

Solidification of NaCl-NaF eutectic in space

Continuous and discontinuous NaF fibers, embedded in a NaCl matrix, have been produced in space and on earth, respectively. The production of continuous fibers in a eutectic mixture was attributed to the absence of convection current in the liquid during solidification in space. Image transmission and optical transmittance measurements of transverse sections of the space-grown and earth-grown ingots were made with a light microscope and a spectrometer. It was found that better optical properties were obtained from samples grown in space. This was attributed to a better alignment of NaF fibers along the ingot axis.

Experimental data are in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Investigation into the role of NaCL deposited on oxide and metal substrates in the initiation of hot corrosion

The conversion to Na2SO4 of NaCl deposited on oxide substrates was studied as a function of temperature, in air with various SO2 and H2O partial pressures. The substrate was either a pure oxide or an oxide scale growing on a metal specimen. The progress of the reaction was observed using the SEM-EDAX technique to monitor morphological effects and, as far as possible, establish the rate of the process. The physical characteristics of the interaction between salt and substrate were also examined with particular reference to physical damage to the underlying oxide, especially when this is a scale on a metal specimen. An effort was also made to establish the conditions under which liquid phases may form and the mechanisms by which they form.

On the stability of the creep substructure in NaCl single crystals

Microstructural observations were conducted on NaCl single crystals after creep. The microstructure after a stress increase followed by a stress decrease consisted primarily of cells; no significant number of subgrains were observed although they were present in the microstructures produced during uninterrupted tests. Prestraining in the exponential creep regime produced an uniform distribution of dislocations and a few subboundaries which transformed to equiaxed subgrains when tested in the power law creep region. This substructure was similar to that observed in an as-received specimen deformed to an equivalent strain. Prior creep in the power law creep region produced equiaxed subgrains whose boundaries were found to be mechanically stable when the specimen was retested in the exponential creep region. The role of subboundary migration in the formation of new subgrains is discussed.

Effect of strain and stress on the relative dimensions of the 'hard' and 'soft' regions in crept NaCl single crystals

It is shown that the L exp h and L exp s ratio, where these are respectively the average dimensions of the hard and soft regions as a function of stress and strain in crept NaCl single crystals, significantly influences the steady-state creep and power-law breakdown in these crystals. This is suggested to be due to a change in the internal stresses of the material. The present observations also indicate that steady-state creep is more likely to be influenced by the degree of refinement in the cell boundaries within the subgrains than by the formation of equiaxed subgrains under power-law conditions.
