Single-nucleon energies changing with nucleon number

The broad range of accumulated experimental data on the binding energies for single-particle states in nuclei is examined as a function of the constituent number of neutrons and protons and an unexpectedly simple pattern emerges. The dependence of the energies of neutron states on the number of constituent protons, or of proton states on the number of neutrons, are very similar to each other and the sign reflects the well-known strong attraction. For the same kind of nucleons changing as in the state – energies for neutron states with neutron number changing or proton states with protons – the dependence is at least a factor of four weaker in magnitude and slightly repulsive, except when the changing nucleons are only within the same orbit as the state. The systematics of the accumulated data are presented with a minimum of use made of model assumptions.

Reaction dynamics and in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section with 12 C+ 1 H at 95 MeV/nucleon

Reaction dynamics and effective in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross section are studied, using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) model with one of the simplest heavy ion collisions, 12 C+ ⁢1 H. The roles of different stochastic processes are studied, which are installed in the original AMD. One is the diffusion process as a part of the quantum fluctuation originated from the Fermi motion during the time evolution of the wave packets in the mean field (AMD/D). The second is a coalescence treatment for light clusters with A ≤ 8 (AMD/D-COALS). The third is the collision process, installed in AMD with different form of the in-medium NN cross sections. These different processes are examined, using the experimental angular distributions and energy spectra of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments. The effective in-medium NN cross sections are evaluated from the simulated AMD events and compared with the experimentally extracted values. A good agreement is obtained between the AMD values from the 12 C + 1 H reaction at 95 MeV/nucleon and the experimental results for nuclear matter.

Invariant amplitudes, unpolarized cross sections, and polarization asymmetries in neutrino-nucleon and antineutrino-nucleon elastic scattering

At leading order in weak and electromagnetic couplings, cross sections for (anti)neutrino-nucleon elastic scattering are determined by four nucleon form factors that depend on the momentum transfer Q 2 . Including radiative corrections in the Standard Model and potential new physics contributions beyond the Standard Model, eight invariant amplitudes are possible, depending on both Q 2 and the (anti)neutrino energy E ν . We review the definition of these amplitudes and use them to compute both unpolarized and polarized observables including radiative corrections. We show that unpolarized accelerator neutrino cross-section measurements can probe new physics parameter space within the constraints inferred from precision beta decay measurements. Nucleon Electric Polarizabilities and Nucleon-Pion Scattering at the Physical Pion Mass

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the nucleon electric polarizabilities at the physical pion mass. Our findings reveal the substantial contributions of the N π states to these polarizabilities. Without considering these contributions, the lattice results fall significantly below the experimental values, consistent with previous lattice studies. This observation has motivated us to compute both the parity-negative N π scattering up to a nucleon momentum of ∼ 0.5 GeV in the center-of-mass frame and corresponding N γ * → N π matrix elements using lattice QCD. Our results confirm that incorporating dynamic N π contributions is crucial for a reliable determination of the polarizabilities from lattice QCD. This methodology lays the groundwork for future lattice QCD investigations into various other polarizabilities. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Nucleon form factors and the pion-nucleon sigma term

This talk summarizes the progress made since Lattice 2021 in understanding and controlling the contributions of towers of multihadron excited states with mass gaps starting lower than of radial excitations, and in increasing our confidence in the extraction of ground state nucleon matrix elements. The most clear evidence for multihadron excited state contributions (ESC) is in axial/pseudoscalar form factors that are required to satisfy the PCAC relation between them. The talk examines the broader question--which and how many of the theoretically allowed positive parity states N(p)π(−p), N(0)π(0)π(0), N(p)π(0), N(0)π(p), … make significant contributions to a given matrix element? New data for the axial, electric and magnetic form factors are presented. They continue to show trends observed in Ref.[1]. The N2LO χPT analysis of the ESC to the pion-nucleon sigma term, σπN, has been extended to include the Δ as an explicit degree of freedom [2]. The conclusion reached in Ref.[3] that Nπ and Nππ states each contribute about 10 MeV to σπN, and the consistency between the lattice result with Nπ state included and the phenomenological estimate is not changed with this improvement.

Elastic scattering of alpha particles and the phase of the nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude

Glauber theory can describe elastic scattering of alpha particles by He-4, He-3, H-2, and H-1 at 7 GeV/c if the phase of the nucleon-nucleon elastic-scattering amplitude varies with momentum transfer. The phase variation leads to diffraction patterns differing markedly from those typical of constant-phase calculations and greatly affects the magnitudes of the intensities. These changes are mainly due to changes in the interference between amplitudes for different orders of multiple scattering and to a decrease in their moduli.

A Simple Method for Nucleon-Nucleon Cross Sections in a Nucleus

A simple reliable formalism is presented for obtaining nucleon-nucleon cross sections within a nucleus in nuclear collisions for a given projectile and target nucleus combination at a given energy for use in transport, Monte Carlo, and other calculations. The method relies on extraction of these values from experiments and has been tested and found to give excellent results.

Parameterizations of Pion Energy Spectrum in Nucleon-Nucleon Collisions

The effects of pion (PI) production are expected to play an important role in radiation exposures in the upper atmosphere or on the Martian surface. Nuclear databases for describing pion production are developed for radiation transport codes to support these studies. We analyze the secondary energy spectrum of pions produced in nucleon-nucleon (NN) collisions in the relativistic one-pion exchange model. Parametric formulas of the isospin cross sections for one-pion production channels are discussed and are used to renormalize the model spectrum. Energy spectra for the deuteron related channels (NN yields dPi) are also described.

Nucleon-Nucleon Total Cross Section

The total proton-proton and neutron-proton cross sections currently used in the transport code HZETRN show significant disagreement with experiment in the GeV and EeV energy ranges. The GeV range is near the region of maximum cosmic ray intensity. It is therefore important to correct these cross sections, so that predictions of space radiation environments will be accurate. Parameterizations of nucleon-nucleon total cross sections are developed which are accurate over the entire energy range of the cosmic ray spectrum.

Pion Total Cross Section in Nucleon - Nucleon Collisions

Total cross section parameterizations for neutral and charged pion production in nucleon - nucleon collisions are compared to experimental data over the projectile momentum range from threshold to 300 GeV. Both proton - proton and proton - neutron reactions are considered. Overall excellent agreement between parameterizations and experiment is found, except for notable disagreements near threshold. In addition, the hypothesis that the neutral pion production cross section can be obtained from the average charged pion cross section is checked. The theoretical formulas presented in the paper obey this hypothesis for projectile momenta below 500 GeV. The results presented provide a test of engineering tools used to calculate the pion component of space radiation.

Nucleon-nucleon potentials from Δ-full chiral effective-field-theory and implications

We closely investigate NN potentials based upon the Δ-full version of chiral effective-field-theory. We find that recently constructed NN potentials of this kind, which (when applied together with three-nucleon forces) were presented as predicting accurate binding energies and radii for a range of nuclei from A = 16 to A = 132 and providing accurate equations of state for nuclear matter, yield a χ 2 /datum of 60 for the reproduction of the pp data below 100 MeV laboratory energy. This χ 2 is more than three times what the Hamada-Johnston potential of the year of 1962 achieved already some 60 years ago. We perceive this historical fact as concerning in view of the current emphasis on precision. We are able to trace the very large χ 2 as well as the apparent success of the potentials in nuclear structure to unrealistic predictions for P-wave states, in which the Δ-full next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) potentials are off by up to 40 times the NNLO truncation errors. In fact, we show that the worse the description of the P-wave states, the better the predictions in nuclear structure. Thus, these potentials cannot be seen as the solution to the outstanding problems in current microscopic nuclear structure physics.

Bayesian analysis of nucleon-nucleon scattering data in pionless effective field theory

We perform Bayesian model calibration of two-nucleon (NN) low-energy constants (LECs) appearing in an NN interaction based on pionless effective field theory (πEFT). The calibration is carried out for potentials constructed using naive dimensional analysis in NN relative momenta (p) up to next-to-leading order [NLO, O(p 2 )] and next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order [N3LO, O(p 4 )]. We consider two classes of pionless πEFT potential: one that acts in all partial waves and another that is dominated by s-wave physics. The two classes produce broadly similar results for calibrations to NN data up to E lab = 5 MeV. Our analysis accounts for the correlated uncertainties that arise from the truncation of the pionless πEFT. We simultaneously estimate both the πEFT LECs and the parameters that quantify the truncation error. This permits the first quantitative estimates of the pionless πEFT breakdown scale, Λ b : the 95% intervals are Λ b ∈[50.11,63.03] MeV at NLO and Λ b ∈[72.27,88.54] MeV at N3LO. Furthermore, invoking naive dimensional analysis for the NN potential, therefore, does not lead to consistent results across orders in pionless πEFT. This exemplifies the possible use of Bayesian tools to identify inconsistencies in a proposed EFT power counting.

Total Cross Section Parameterizations for Pion Production in Nucleon-Nucleon Collisions

Total cross section parameterizations for neutral and charged pion production in nucleon-nuelcon collisions are compared to an extensive set of experimental data over the projectile momentum range from threshold to 300 GeV. Both proton-proton and proton-neutron reactions are considered. Good agreement between parameterizations and experiment is found, and therefore the parameterizations will be useful for applications, such as transport codes.
