NRIC Digital Engineering Ecosystem

The NRIC Digital Engineering Ecosystem is a software suite designed to eliminate procedural failures in the engineering lifecycle of complex projects. It focuses on improving the flow of scheduling data, safety information, engineering requirements, and CAD files among stakeholders of complex engineering projects. The project comprises software adapters that move engineering data from disparate software tools in and out of a central database. The ecosystem is designed to efficiently incorporate data sources from many different engineering toolsets, making it software agnostic, and adaptable to many different engineering applications.

NRIC Integrated Energy Systems Demonstration Pre-Conceptual Designs

This report presents pre-conceptual design scenarios for a potential multiphase demonstration program for innovative uses of nuclear energy with the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) and the Crosscutting Technology Development Integrated Energy Systems (CTD IES) program in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy. The demonstration program would address the need for low-carbon energy sources among industry stakeholders by identifying and implementing high-impact advanced nuclear projects within a holistic systems perspective. Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC, the managing and operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in Idaho Falls, Idaho, is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) for industry stakeholder participation in the potential demonstration program. Funding sources have not yet been identified for the demonstration program. Responses to the EOI will shape the development and funding requirements for the potential program and inform the down-selection of project designs for further planning and analysis from the wide set of pre-conceptual design scenarios shown in this report. This introductory section summarizes the need for low-carbon energy sources, describes the phases envisioned for the demonstration program, and outlines the organization of this report.

Why the United States? Why NRIC? US Advanced Nuclear Ambitions: History and Future

The United States is the birthplace of modern atomic technology. It was responsible for the development of the first nuclear bomb during World War II as well as subsequent decades of world-leading research into the peaceful applications of the atom for energy generation, medicine, industry, agriculture and home appliances. Today, 30 countries use nuclear power to produce energy with the United States being the largest producer in terms of total gigawatt hours (GWh).

NRIC Strategy for Advancing Nuclear Integrated Energy Systems

Integrated energy systems (IES) combine low-carbon energy sources to meet demand for clean energy in multiple forms across multiple sectors of economy. IES create opportunities to cost-effectively dispatch generation resources to balance electricity supply and demand. In addition to producing electricity, IES increase the value of non-emitting energy sources by integrating generation technologies with industrial processes to efficiently produce commodities that benefit the manufacturing, industrial processing, and transportation industries. Nuclear energy technology is key to enabling these benefits. Advanced nuclear reactors capable of producing high-quality heat, electricity, and radiation, will play a foundational role in IES of the future.

NRIC Final Water Management Options

The purpose of this paper is to inform advanced reactor developers of the conditions and requirements needed to manage the water used to reject heat from advanced reactor demonstrations at the INL. While there are many advanced reactor concepts, all of them require heat rejection, and some plan to use water for hear rejection. Cooling water for heat rejection is frequently the largest fresh-water load for a nuclear reactor, and therefore the focus of water management. The type of reactor and its purpose, the physical conditions at the INL, and the regulatory structure of the demonstration also influence the optimal method of heat rejection. Choosing the best method of rejecting heat will significantly influence the cost and probability of success for any advanced reactor demonstration. One of the important considerations in the deployment of demonstration plants at the INL site is water use and its implications. Advanced reactor developers need to consider the limitations of the water consumption based on the state and federal regulations. The water consumption may become a limitation when the demonstration reactor capacities reach to conventional nuclear power plants.
