Structural Testing Technology Development: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-06-00200

NREL is the only organization in the US that is accredited to conduct tests of wind turbine systems and components in accordance with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) test standards. The National Wind Technology Center houses the only full-scale wind turbine blade drivetrain test facilities in the US. To maintain these facilities, accreditation, and the acceptance of the wind industry, NREL must strive continuously to maintain and improve staff capabilities, procedures, facility and equipment. In addition, as wind turbines continue to increase in size, NREL must improve its capability to test the larger components associated with these new turbines. NREL is currently investigating methods to increase blade and drivetrain testing capabilities. Mitsubishi Power Systems (MPS) must also strive to meet the demands of the evolving wind energy industry by developing, proving and manufacturing new, cost-effective blades for its turbines. Mitsubishi has established a joint venture with TPI composites of Rhode Island for manufacturing blades to be installed on US wind turbines. There is an obvious advantage to test these prototype blades in a US facility. The NREL blade test facility is uniquely capable of fulfilling this need. In addition, NREL can provide other testing support to MPS through the use of its dynamometer facility for drivetrain testing and through the use of NREL’s field-testing capabilities for testing wind turbine systems. This CRADA provides the opportunity for both organizations to achieve critical goals in development of wind energy in the US. MPS obtains verification of its wind turbine components and system. NREL obtains improved test capabilities.

Equitable Electrification Analysis for Existing Buildings in Richmond, CA

Over a 12-month period beginning in July 2022, NREL coordinated with a coalition of staff from the City of Richmond and local community organizations to develop and conduct a city-wide building energy use analysis and develop and assess the impacts of various approaches to electrifying and improving energy efficiency of all existing residential and commercial buildings within the city limits. Building on data available through NREL's ResStock™ and ComStock™ analysis tools, the authors looked at potential modeled impacts of building envelope and electrification upgrades on five indicators identified by the community coalition: building energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, utility bill charges and cost-effectiveness, employment impacts, and health and safety impacts. This report summarizes the findings of that research and analysis.

Considerations for Floating Wind Energy Development in the Gulf of Maine

This report summarizes the primary considerations for developing floating offshore wind energy in the Gulf of Maine based on the current knowledge of the staff at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as of June 2023. This work was performed as a supplement to information solicited by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) in their Call for Information and Nominations announced in April 2023 (BOEM 2023b). The purpose of this report is to provide general information to the citizens of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, and to inform decision makers and stakeholders about the unique challenges of developing floating offshore wind in the Gulf of Maine. This report intends to provide context to show the importance of the energy markets created by the states that floating offshore wind development in the Gulf of Maine will serve.

Energy Technology Commercialization and Entrepreneurship: Insights From the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Technology Transitions 2024 Energy Technology University Prize Faculty Track

The Energy Technology University Prize (EnergyTech UP) was established in 2022 with the goal of challenging student teams to develop impactful business plans for energy technologies of their choosing. EnergyTech UP is part of the The American Made Challenges program portfolio, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. EnergyTech UP is specifically funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) and is administrated by staff at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Since its inception, the annual prize has attracted applications from approximately 1,948 students across nearly every U.S. state and territory, awarding over $1 million in funds to student teams. In 2024, the prize expanded to include a Faculty Track, which invited faculty members from degree-granting institutions across the U.S. to design entrepreneurship-based curricula or educational activities. This new track aims to foster innovation in energy entrepreneurship education by leveraging the expertise of faculty to create robust, practical, and inclusive learning experiences. This report summarizes the themes, strategies and impacts identified in proposals from EnergyTech UP's inaugural Faculty Track. Our primary data for organizing insights are the Faculty Track applications themselves. This evaluation of 2024 EnergyTech UP Faculty Track applications aims to support future EnergyTech UP Faculty Track applicants as well as others who are interested in promoting, developing, and/or implementing educational activities that focus on energy commercialization and entrepreneurship at their institutions. By presenting insights from 2024 entries to the Faculty Track, we hope to contribute to a growing inventory of open-source curriculum development resources and provide materials to facilitate the growth of similar programs at a variety of collegiate institutions.

PHEV Distribution Grid Integration and Smart Systems Testing: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report

To continue NREL's mission, which includes preparing technologies and markets with "speed and scale," NREL researchers will collaborate with Toyota on plug-in electric vehicle technology. Toyota will provide a collection of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles ("PHEVs" [and ultimately including PEVs], collectively, the "Vehicles") to conduct infrastructure interaction testing at NREL facilities. NREL will use available resources in the Vehicle Testing and Integration Facility (VTIF), its staff parking garage with numerous commercial Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment ("EVSEs"), and its Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) to safely execute research experiments that highlight potential distribution system power quality challenges related to plug-in electric vehicles. The expected outcome of this project is a better understanding of the correlation of individual vehicle power quality attributes to a system of vehicles on a distribution network. The data collected and the simulations conducted will be used to guide future experiments and project development that aid in the deployment of plug-in electric vehicles ("PEV").
