Cooperative implementation of a high temperature acoustic sensor

The current status and results of a cooperative program aimed at the implementation of a high-temperature acoustic/strain sensor onto metallic structures are reported. The sensor systems that are to be implemented under this program will measure thermal expansion, maneuver loads, aircraft buffet, sonic fatigue, and acoustic emissions in environments that approach 1800 F. The discussion covers fiber development, fabrication of an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer acoustic sensor, sensor mounting/integration, and results of an evaluation of the sensor capabilities.

Asteroseismology with FRESIP: A meter class space telescope

The requirements for asteroseismology and searching for occulting inner planets are similar. The FRESIP mission will be suited to making asteroseismology measurements. Recommendation: Use 30-60 second integrations from one or more CCD's in the FRESIP mosaic, sampled continuously for the entire mission to measure stellar non-radial oscillations with amplitudes of parts per million and frequencies of 0.1 to 10 MHz. These measurements lead to determination of stellar interior helium abundances, rotation rates, depth of convection zones and measuring stellar cycle frequency changes for a variety of stellar types, enabling major advances in stellar structure and evolutionary theories.

Time-Distance Helioseismology with the MDI Instrument: Initial Results

In time-distance helioseismology, the travel time of acoustic waves is measured between various points on the solar surface. To some approximation, the waves can be considered to follow ray paths that depend only on a mean solar model, with the curvature of the ray paths being caused by the increasing sound speed with depth below the surface. The travel time is effected by various inhomogeneities along the ray path, including flows, temperature inhomogeneities, and magnetic fields. By measuring a large number of times between different locations and using an inversion method, it is possible to construct 3-dimensional maps of the subsurface inhomogeneities. The SOI/MDI experiment on SOHO has several unique capabilities for time-distance helioseismology. The great stability of the images observed without benefit of an intervening atmosphere is quite striking. It his made it possible for us to detect the travel time fo separations of points as small as 2.4 Mm in the high-resolution mode of MDI (0.6 arc sec 1/pixel). This has enabled the detection of the supergranulation flow. Coupled with the inversion technique, we can now study the 3-dimensional evolution of the flows near the solar surface.

Mars ROCKS! in North Dakota, Solar System Ambassador Program in North Dakota

Mars is Rock'n in the Midwest! With a total of 5 currently running space missions exploring the red planet, what can teachers locally do to bring Mars into the classroom and capitalize on free and low-cost resources to teach Earth Science in terms of Mars? The NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador is one such resource that Earth science teachers in the region can utilize. Currently only one Solar System Ambassador exists in the whole state of North Dakota. North Dakota is a rural state with the majority of its population concentrated on the eastern frindges which include the cities of Grand Forks and Fargo. The ruralness of the rest of the state provide a interesting challenge for any outreach program especially the solar system ambassador program.

Radio frequency strain monitor

A radio frequency strain monitor includes a voltage controlled oscillator for generating an oscillating signal that is input into a propagation path. The propagation path is preferably bonded to the surface of a structure to be monitored and produces a propagated signal. A phase difference between the oscillating and propagated signals is detected and maintained at a substantially constant value which is preferably a multiple of 90.degree. by changing the frequency of the oscillating signal. Any change in frequency of the oscillating signal provides an indication of strain in the structure to which the propagation path is bonded.

Wastewater to Plant Nutrient System

Vision and Mission Statement During human space exploration missions longer than 30 days (500 days to indefinite; as defined by NASA strategic plan), a spacefaring crew will generate liquid waste that can be recovered and processed to create nutrients for a plant food production system. In addition, the sodium in urine has a potential to build-up in the system and is not useful as a plant fertilizer since it can stress plants at high concentrations. Finding a way to separate these products and retrieve them for other use is critical for long duration missions. This is useful since it can greatly reduce the amount of overall mission mass.
