Femtosecond X-ray Diffraction of Laser-shocked Forsterite (Mg 2 SiO 4 ) to 122 GPa

The response of forsterite, Mg 2 SiO 4 , under dynamic compression is of fundamental importance for understanding its phase transformations and high-pressure behavior. Here, we have carried out an in situ X-ray diffraction study of laser-shocked polycrystalline and single-crystal forsterite from 19 to 122 GPa using the Matter in Extreme Conditions end-station of the Linac Coherent Light Source. Under laser-based shock loading, forsterite does not transform to the high-pressure equilibrium assemblage of MgSiO 3 bridgmanite and MgO periclase, as has been suggested previously. Instead, we observe forsterite and forsterite III, a metastable polymorph of Mg 2 SiO 4 , coexisting in a mixed-phase region from 33 to 75 GPa for both polycrystalline and single-crystal samples. Densities inferred from X-ray diffraction are consistent with earlier gas-gun shock data. At higher stress, the response is sample-dependent. Polycrystalline samples undergo amorphization above 79 GPa. For [010]- and [001]-oriented crystals, a mixture of crystalline and amorphous material is observed to 108 GPa, whereas the [100]-oriented forsterite adopts an unknown phase at 122 GPa. The first two sharp diffraction peaks of amorphous Mg 2 SiO 4 show a similar trend with compression as those observed for MgSiO 3 in both recent static- and laser-driven shock experiments. This study provides new insight into the transformation of forsterite under nanosecond-duration shock loading. This work emphasizes the importance of formation of metastable phases along the Hugoniot and adds to evidence that the 300-K single-crystal diamond anvil cell experiments have relevance for understanding structures formed under shock compression. In particular, the metastable phase forsterite III has now been shown to form under dynamic compression from 10s to 100s of nanoseconds as well as under 300-K static compression. Upon compression to higher pressures, Mg 2 SiO 4 transforms to an amorphous phase. These results have broad relevance for understanding the behavior of silicates under dynamic compression.

High-temperature phonon-mediated superconductivity in monolayer Mg 2 B 4 C 2

A two-dimensional material – Mg 2 B 4 C 2 , belonging to the family of the conventional superconductor MgB 2 , is theoretically predicted to exhibit superconductivity with critical temperature T c estimated in the 47–48 K range (predicted using the McMillian-Allen-Dynes formula) without any tuning of external parameters such as doping, strain, or substrate-induced effects. The origin of such a high intrinsic T c is ascribed to the presence of strong electron-phonon coupling and large density of states at the Fermi level. This system is obtained after replacing the chemically active boron-boron surface layers in a MgB 2 slab by chemically inactive boron-carbon layers. Hence, the surfaces of this material are inert. Our calculations confirm the stability of 2D Mg 2 B 4 C 2 . We also find that the key features of this material remain essentially unchanged when its thickness is increased by modestly increasing the number of inner MgB 2 layers.

High Capacity for Mg 2+ Deintercalation in Spinel Vanadium Oxide Nanocrystals

Nonaqueous Mg batteries can theoretically reach high energy density with cost-effective materials, yet no such device to date has performance competitive with Li-ion technologies. A major barrier is the need for oxide cathodes that combine high capacity and voltage. Very few oxides have shown intrinsic ability for Mg 2+ intercalation in electrolytes with acceptably low content of H2O. Herein, we demonstrate that nanocrystals of MgV 2 O 4 can reach high capacity for Mg 2+ deintercalation with a mechanism that preserves their spinel framework, validated through measurements with different chemical and structural sensitivity. The structural stability contrasts with other phases where reaching high capacity required distortions that introduce undesirable mechanical strain. The favorable properties of the oxide allowed cycling in a full cell with Mg metal. This work reveals new insights into the viability of multivalent intercalation in oxides, meeting a milestone toward the feasibility of high-voltage batteries with either Mg metal or Mg-ion anodes.

Ab initio prediction of an order-disorder transition in Mg 2 Ge O 4 : Implication for the nature of super-Earth's mantles

Here we present an ab initio prediction of an order-disorder transition (ODT) from a I¯42d-type to Th 3 P 4 -type phase in the cation sublattices of Mg 2 GeO 4 , a post-post-perovskite phase. This uncommon type of prediction is achieved by carrying out a high-throughput sampling of atomic configurations in a 56-atom supercell followed by a Boltzmann ensemble statistics calculation. Mg 2 GeO 4 is a low-pressure analog of I¯42d-type Mg 2 SiO 4 , a predicted major planet-forming phase of super-Earths' mantles. Therefore, a similar ODT is anticipated in I¯42d-type Mg 2 SiO 4 as well, which should impact the internal structure and dynamics of these planets. Furthermore, the prediction of this Th 3 P 4 -type phase in Mg 2 GeO 4 further enhances the relationship between the crystal structures of Earth/planet-forming silicates and oxides at extreme pressures and those of rare-earth sesquisulfides at low pressures.

Ultrahigh-pressure disordered eight-coordinated phase of Mg 2 GeO 4 : Analogue for super-Earth mantles

Mg 2 GeO 4 is important as an analog for the ultrahigh-pressure behavior of Mg 2 SiO 4 , a major component of planetary interiors. In this study, we have investigated magnesium germanate to 275 GPa and over 2,000 K using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) computations. The experimental results are consistent with the formation of a phase with disordered Mg and Ge, in which germanium adopts eightfold coordination with oxygen: the cubic, Th 3 P 4 -type structure. DFT computations suggest partial Mg-Ge order, resulting in a tetragonal $I\bar{4}2d$ structure indistinguishable from $I\bar{4}3d$ Th 3 P 4 in our experiments. If applicable to silicates, the formation of this highly coordinated and intrinsically disordered phase may have important implications for the interior mineralogy of large, rocky extrasolar planets.

Impacts of divalent cations (Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ ) on PFAS bioaccumulation in freshwater macroinvertebrates representing different foraging modes

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have extensively contaminated freshwater aquatic ecosystems where they can be transported in water and partition to sediment and biota. In this paper, three freshwater benthic macroinvertebrates with different foraging modes were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of eight perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA), three perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSA), and three fluorotelomer sulfonates (FTS) at varying divalent cation concentrations of magnesium (Mg 2+ ) and calcium (Ca 2+ ). Divalent cations can impact PFAS partitioning to solids, especially to sediments, at higher concentrations. Sediment dwelling worms (Lumbriculus variegatus), epibenthic grazing snails (Physella acuta), and sediment-dwelling filter-feeding bivalves (Elliptio complanata) were selected due to their unique foraging modes. Microcosms were composed of synthetic sediment, culture water, macroinvertebrates, and PFAS and consisted of a 28-day exposure period. L. variegatus had significantly higher PFAS bioaccumulation than P. acuta and E. complanata, likely due to higher levels of interactions with and ingestion of the contaminated sediment. “High Mg 2+ ” (7.5 mM Mg 2+ ) and “High Ca 2+ ” (7.5 mM Ca 2+ ) conditions generally had statistically higher bioaccumulation factors (BAF) than the “Reference Condition” (0.2 mM Ca 2+ and 0.2 mM Mg 2+ ) for PFAS with perfluorinated chain lengths greater than eight carbons. Long-chain PFAS dominated the PFAS profiles of the macroinvertebrates for all groups of compounds studied (PFCA, PFSA, and FTS). Furthermore, these results indicate that the study organism has the greatest impact on bioaccumulation, although divalent cation concentration had observable impacts between organisms depending on the environmental conditions. Elevated cation concentrations in the microcosms led to significantly greater bioaccumulation in the test organisms compared to the experimental reference conditions for long-chain PFAS.

Ultraselective sequestration of Li + and Mg 2+ from brines via a reusable polyoxoniobate-based ion sponge

Lithium (Li) and magnesium (Mg) are designated as critical mineral materials (CMM) due to their essential roles in clean energy technologies. However, extracting high-purity Li + from brine remains a formidable challenge owing to the presence of Mg 2+ , a physicochemical similar ion that often exists in excess. Here, we introduce a polyoxoniobate-based “Mg-PONb sponge” that enables ultraselective and rapid Li + /Mg 2+ separation across an exceptionally broad range of Mg/Li ratios (0.02 to 200.63). This framework achieves >99.9% Mg 2+ removal with negligible Li + loss in under 1 min, yielding Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity values exceeding 5000. The sponge demonstrates excellent recyclability, maintaining >99% Mg 2+ rejection and Li + permeability across five regeneration cycles without structural degradation. Mechanistic investigations reveal that selective Mg 2+ capture originates from strong coordination with terminal oxygens on the PONb cluster, driving rapid formation of porous Mg-PONb frameworks. This work presents a generalizable, scalable strategy for Li + /Mg 2+ separation and offers a sustainable path toward enhanced Li and Mg recovery from complex brine sources.

Polarity‐Driven Atomic Displacements at the 2D Mg 2 TiO 4 ‐MgO (001) Oxide Interface for Hosting Potential Interlayer Excitons

Abstract Interlayer excitons in solid‐state systems have emerged as candidates for realizing novel platforms ranging from excitonic transistors and optical qubits to exciton condensates. Interlayer excitons have been discovered in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, with large exciton binding energies and the ability to form various van der Waals heterostructures. Here, an oxide system consisting of a single unit cell of Mg 2 TiO 4 on MgO (001) is proposed as a platform for hosting interlayer excitons. Using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, molecular beam epitaxy growth, and in situ crystal truncation rod measurements, it is shown that the Mg 2 TiO 4 ‐MgO interface can be precisely controlled to yield an internal electric field suitable for hosting interlayer excitons. The atoms in the polar Mg 2 TiO 4 layers are observed to be displaced to reduce polarity at the interface with the non‐polar MgO (001) surface. Such polarity‐driven atomic displacements strongly affect electrostatics of the film and the interface, resulting in localization of filled and empty band‐edge states in different layers of the Mg 2 TiO 4 film. The DFT calculations suggest that the electronic structure is favorable for localization of photoexcited electrons in the bottom layer and holes in the top layer, which may bind to form interlayer exciton states.

The Elastic Properties of β-Mg 2 SiO 4 Containing 0.73 wt.% of H 2 O to 10 GPa and 600 K by Ultrasonic Interferometry with Synchrotron X-Radiation

Here, we measured the elastic velocities of a synthetic polycrystalline β-Mg 2 SiO 4 containing 0.73 wt.% H 2 O to 10 GPa and 600 K using ultrasonic interferometry combined with synchrotron X-radiation. Third-order Eulerian finite strain analysis of the high P and T data set yielded K so = 161.5(2) GPa, G o = 101.6(1) GPa, and (∂K s /∂P) T = 4.84(4), (∂G/∂P) T = 1.68(2) indistinguishable from K so = 161.1(3) GPa, G o = 101.4(1) GPa, and (∂K s /∂P) T = 4.93(4), (∂G/∂P) T = 1.73(2) from the linear fit. The hydration of the wadsleyite by 0.73 wt.% decreases K s and G moduli by 5.3% and 8.6%, respectively, but no measurable effect was noted for (∂K s /∂P) T and (∂G/∂P) T . The temperature derivatives of the K s and G moduli from the finite strain analysis (∂K S /∂T) P = –0.013(2) GPaK –1 , (∂G/∂T) P = –0.015(0.4) GPaK –1 , and the linear fit (∂K S /∂T) P = –0.015(1) GPaK –1 , (∂G/∂T) P = –0.016(1) GPaK –1 are in agreement, and both data sets indicating the |(∂G/∂T) P | to be greater than |(∂K S /∂T) P |. Calculations yield ΔV p(α-β) = 9.88% and ΔV S(α-β) = 8.70% for the hydrous β-Mg 2 SiO 4 and hydrous α-Mg 2 SiO 4 , implying 46–52% olivine volume content in the Earth’s mantle to satisfy the seismic velocity contrast ΔV s = ΔV P = 4.6% at the 410 km depth.

Synthesis and Mg 2+ deintercalation in manganese spinel nanocrystals

Transition metal oxides are promising materials as cathodes for divalent batteries with high capacity under high voltage. A major challenge is the sluggish kinetics of intercalation of divalent cations into the oxide host. Tailoring of the size, composition and crystal structure of oxides is a necessary strategy to alleviate these barriers, which challenges our control of their synthesis. In this work, we selectively synthesize spinel-type Mg x Mn 3-x O 4 nanocrystals with different Mg/Mn ratios and investigate their ability to electrochemically shuttle Mg 2+ ions. Crystal-chemical characterization of the reaction outcomes was conducted with X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. Both 5 nm thick MgMn 2 O 4 nanosheets and 10 nm Mg 0.41 Mn 2.59 O 4 nanocubes underwent reversible Mg 2+ deintercalation, yet no obvious reaction was observed in 60 nm Mg 1.2 Mn 1.8 O 4 nanocubes. Our results suggest that both the size of the spinel nanocrystals and the Mg/Mn ratios play a role in the observed behaviour. The advances in the synthesis of spinel oxide nanocrystals achieved, and their correlation with Mg 2+ deintercalation, pave the way toward the precise synthesis of multivalent cathode materials that fundamentally overcome barriers to practical application.

Chrome-free qandilite (Mg 2 TiO 4 ) refractory aggregates: Role of titania source and evaluation of thermal expansion coefficient

As used chrome-based refractories may contain toxic Cr 6+ , the chrome-free Mg 2 TiO 4 phase is being considered which is known to improve hot strength and resistance to thermal shock and slag corrosion. As in situ Mg 2 TiO 4 formation generates porosity, preformed aggregates are desirable. Dilatometric studies revealed that when dead burned magnesia is combined with industrial anatase instead of rutile, it expanded less (1% versus 7.2%) and the reaction occurred earlier (965°C compared to 1120°C). After sintering at 1,600°C, rutile produced an aggregate with 3.8% open porosity, whereas anatase led to 0 % porosity and a bulk density of 3.24g/cm 3 with a thermal expansion coefficient (70–1,600°C) of 13.5×10 -6 K -1 . Moreover, replacing rutile by anatase eliminates the undesirable MgTiO 3 phase. The anatase-based aggregate consisted of a Mg 2 TiO 4 matrix with residual unreacted MgO and an intergranular, refractory CaTiO 3 phase. In conclusion, the rutile-based aggregate was deemed unsuitable due to a low-melting microstructure of forsterite contiguous with CaTiO 3 .

High-pressure phase transition of olivine-type Mg 2 GeO 4 to a metastable forsterite-III type structure and their equations of state

Germanates are often used as structural analogs of planetary silicates. We have explored the high-pressure phase relations in Mg 2 GeO 4 using diamond-anvil cell experiments combined with synchrotron X-ray diffraction and computations based on density functional theory. Upon room temperature compression, forsterite-type Mg 2 GeO 4 remains stable up to 30 GPa. At higher pressures, a phase transition to a forsterite-III type (Cmc2 1 ) structure was observed, which remained stable to the peak pressure of 105 GPa. Using a third-order Birch Murnaghan fit to the experimental data, we obtained V 0 = 305.1(3) Å3, K 0 = 124.6(14) GPa, and $K'_0$ = 3.86 (fixed) for forsterite-type Mg 2 GeO 4 and V 0 = 263.5(15) Å 3 , K 0 = 175(7) GPa, and $K'_0$ = 4.2 (fixed) for the forsterite-III type phase. The forsterite-III type structure was found to be metastable when compared to the stable assemblage of perovskite/post-perovskite + MgO, as observed during laser-heating experiments. Understanding the phase relations and physical properties of metastable phases is crucial for studying the mineralogy of impact sites, understanding metastable wedges in subducting slabs, and interpreting the results of shock compression experiments.

Mg 2+ ion-catalyzed polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane in battery electrolytes

Electrolyte salts with Mg 2+ and Al 3+ Lewis acidic cations demonstrate polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane. The speed and extent of the reaction depends on coordination of the anion with the Mg 2+ cation catalyst. Weakly coordinating anions such as TFSI - aid faster polymerization while strongly coordinating anions such as ClO 4 - hinder the polymerization.

Fluoroarene Separations in Metal-Organic Frameworks with Two Proximal Mg 2+ Coordination Sites

Fluoroarenes which are widely used in medicinal, agricultural, and materials chemistry, and yet their production remains a critical challenge in organic synthesis. Indeed, the nearly identical physical properties of these vital building blocks hinders their purification by traditional methods, such as flash chromatography or distillation. As a result, the Balz-Schiemann reaction is currently employed to prepare fluoroarenes instead of more atom-economical C-H fluorination reactions, which produce inseparable mixtures of regioisomers. Herein, we propose an alternative solution to this problem: the purification of mixtures of fluoroarenes using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Specifically, we demonstrate that controlling the interaction of fluoroarenes with adjacent coordinatively unsaturated Mg 2+ centers within a MOF enables the separation of fluoroarene mixtures with unparalleled selectivities. Liquid-phase multicomponent equilibrium adsorption data and breakthrough measurements coupled with van der Waals-corrected density functional theory calculations reveal that the materials Mg 2 (dobdc) (dobdc 4- = 2,5-dioxidobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) and Mg 2 ( m -dobdc) ( m -dobdc 4- = 2,4-dioxidobenzene-1,5-dicarboxylate) are capable of separating the difluorobenzene isomers from one another. Additionally, these frameworks facilitate the separations of fluoroanisoles, fluorotoluenes, and fluorochlorobenzenes. In addition to enabling currently unfeasible separations for the production of fluoroarenes, our results suggest that carefully controlling the interaction of isomers with not one but two strong binding sites within a MOF provides a general strategy for achieving challenging liquid-phase separations.

Porous Liquids as Electrolyte: A Case Study of Li + and Mg 2+ Ion Transport in Crown Ether-Based Type-II Porous Liquids

Here, we demonstrate crown ether (CE)-based type II porous liquid (PL) electrolytes in which CEs provide internal porosity and are capable of coordinating with Li + and Mg 2+ ions. We investigated the physicochemical properties of the PL electro-lytes with different functional groups and cavity sizes. Among the electrolytes studied, the 12-crown-4 (12C4)-based PL electrolyte exhibited the most enhanced ionic conductivity due to size match between the CE cavity and the Li + ion. Nu-clear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared analyses revealed that addition of CEs reduces the Li + ion–solvent interaction, resulting in the formation of Li-CE complexes. The simulation study clearly showed that the solvated Li + and Mg 2+ ions form complexes with 12C4. The strategy described here using CE-based PLs should be applicable to the design versatile electrolytes for various metal-ion batteries.

Physical origins of the varying performance and unusual transport behaviors among thermoelectric A Mg 2 Sb 2 materials ( A = Ca, Sr, Sm, Yb, and Mg)

Contrary to the similar thermoelectric performance among both AZn 2 Sb 2 and AMg 2 Bi 2 compounds, their isostructural counterparts, AMg 2 Sb 2 , can exhibit thermoelectric figure of merit values that vary by orders of magnitude with different A elements. Here, we reveal physical origins accounting for the significantly differing performance among AMg 2 Sb 2 -based compounds (A = Ca, Sr, Sm, Yb, and Mg) through comprehensive analyses, where it is shown that the dispar- ities in performance at the macroscale essentially originate from the widely varying activation energies that equal amounts of dopant can induce. Meanwhile, a few unusual transport behaviors regarding electrical conductivity, carrier concentration, or lattice thermal con- ductivity among these compounds have been identified, and we also present their rationales in depth. Furthermore, this mechanism-focused study can not only promote further understanding of the complex transport behaviors in condensed matter but be instrumental in rationally tun- ing the physical properties of materials as well.
