Emergent long-range magnetic order in ultrathin (111)-oriented LaNiO3 films

Abstract The emergence of ferromagnetism in materials where the bulk phase does not show any magnetic order demonstrates that atomically precise films can stabilize distinct ground states and expands the phase space for the discovery of materials. Here, the emergence of long-range magnetic order is reported in ultrathin (111) LaNiO 3 (LNO) films, where bulk LNO is paramagnetic, and the origins of this phase are explained. Transport and structural studies of LNO(111) films indicate that NiO 6 octahedral distortions stabilize a magnetic insulating phase at the film/substrate interface and result in a thickness-dependent metal–insulator transition at t = 8 unit cells. Away from this interface, distortions relax and bulk-like conduction is regained. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction and dynamical x-ray diffraction simulations confirm a corresponding out-of-plane unit-cell expansion at the interface of all films. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that distortion stabilizes an increased concentration of Ni 2+ ions. Evidence of long-range magnetic order is found in anomalous Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements, likely due to ferromagnetic superexchange interactions among Ni 2+ –Ni 3+ ions. Together, these results indicate that long-range magnetic ordering and metallicity in LNO(111) films emerges from a balance among the spin, charge, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom.

Noncoplanar magnetic order in the breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2⁢ (NO 3 )

We report a comprehensive study investigating the magnetic ordering properties of the quasi-two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2 ⁢(NO 3 ) using neutron diffraction and thermodynamic measurements. A long-range magnetic order emerges below the Néel temperature, T N = 18K, characterized by a propagating vector k = (0,0,1.5). Refinement analysis reveals that the copper moments display a noncoplanar arrangement, with the c components parallelly aligned within the breathing kagome plane and antiparallelly aligned between the layers. In-plane moment components form a chiral “tail-chase” structure. The magnetic order is quickly suppressed under moderate external fields applied both within and perpendicular to the kagome plane. Potential magnetic interactions that may be associated with the noncoplanar chiral magnetic structure are discussed.

Magnetic order driven ultrafast phase transition in NdNiO 3

Ultrashort x-ray pulses can be used to disentangle magnetic and structural dynamics and are accordingly utilized here to study the photoexcitation of NdNiO 3 (NNO), a model nickelate exhibiting structural and magnetic dynamics that conspire to induce an insulator-to-metal transition (IMT). Here, during the course of the photoinduced IMT with above-gap excitation, we observe an ultrafast (< 180 fs) quenching of magnetic order followed by a time delayed collapse of the insulating phase probed by x-ray absorption and THz transmission (450 fs) that correlates with the slowest optical phonon mode involved in the structural transition. A simultaneous order-disorder response at the Ni site and displacive response at the Nd site coexist in the ultrafast magnetic response. Crucially, we observe the optical phonon through its coherent coupling with Nd magnetic order, demonstrating that the magnetic and structural degrees of freedom both contribute in driving the IMT. Density functional theory calculations reveal a consistent scenario where optically driven intersite charge transfer drives a collapse of antiferromagnetic order that in turn destabilizes the charge-ordered phase resulting in an IMT. These experiments provide different modalities for the control of electronic phase transitions in quantum materials based on the ultrafast interplay between structural and magnetic orders created by femtosecond photoexcitation.

Absence of magnetic order in epitaxial RuO 2 revealed by x-ray linear dichroism

Recently the topic of altermagnetism has attracted tremendous attention, and RuO 2 has been demonstrated to be one of the most promising altermagnetic candidates. However, disputes still remain on the existence of magnetic order in RuO 2 . Here in this work, we employ x-ray linear dichroism (XLD), a widely utilized technique for characterizing antiferromagnets, in conjunction with photoemission electron microscopy and multiple scattering calculation to provide clear evidence of the absence of magnetic order in epitaxial RuO 2 films. The observed XLD signal is nearly invariant with temperature and independent of cooling-field direction, in stark contrast to the substantial magnetic-order-related XLD signal predicted by multiple scattering calculation. This finding strongly suggests a nonmagnetic origin for RuO 2 . Furthermore, we observed significantly distinct XLD signals at the Ru M 3 and O K edges in RuO 2 films grown on TiO 2 substrate with different surface orientations, which can be attributed to the low-symmetry crystal field. In conclusion, these results unequivocally demonstrate the absence of magnetic order in RuO 2 and establish XLD measurement as a robust technique for probing the low-symmetry magnetic materials.

Excess heat capacity in magnetically ordered Ce heavy-fermion metals

Herein we study the magnetic heat capacity of a series of magnetically ordered Ce-based heavy-fermion materials, which show an anomalous T 3 heat capacity in excess of the phonon contribution in many materials. For compounds for which magnon models have been worked out, we show that the local-moment magnon heat capacity derived from the measured magnon spectra underestimates the experimental specific heat. The excess heat capacity reveals increasing density of states with increasing energy, akin to a pseudogap. We show that this anomalous temperature-dependent term is not associated with proximity to a quantum critical point, but is strongly correlated with T N , indicating the anomalous excitations are governed by the magnetic exchange interaction. This insight may hold key information for understanding magnetically ordered heavy fermions.

Atomically Resolved Acoustic Dynamics Coupled with Magnetic Order in a Van der Waals Antiferromagnet

Magnetoelastic coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials enables a unique interplay between the spin and lattice degrees of freedom. Characterizing the elastic responses with atomic and femtosecond resolution across the magnetic transition is essential for guiding the design of magnetically tunable actuators and strain-mediated spintronic devices. Here, ultrafast X-ray diffraction employed at a free-electron laser reveals that the atomic displacements, wave vectors, and dispersion relations of acoustic phonon modes in a vdW antiferromagnet FePS3 are coupled with the magnetic order, by tracking both in-plane and out-of-plane Bragg peaks upon optical excitation across the Néel temperature (TN). One transverse mode shows that a quasi-out-of-plane atomic displacement undergoes a significant directional change across TN. Its quasi-in-plane wave vector is derived by comparing the measured sound velocity and the first-principles calculations. The other transverse mode is an interlayer shear acoustic mode whose amplitude is strongly enhanced in the antiferromagnetic phase, exhibiting eight times stronger amplitude than the longitudinal acoustic mode below TN. The atomically resolved characterization of acoustic phonon dynamics that couple with magnetic ordering opens opportunities for harnessing unique magnetoelastic coupling in vdW magnets on ultrafast timescales.

Long-range magnetic order and relaxor ferroelectricity in a hexagonal high-entropy ferrite

Multiferroics that combine ferroelectricity and magnetic order are attractive for electronic and spintronic technologies, yet chemical disorder that promotes relaxor ferroelectricity usually suppresses long-range magnetic order. Here, we report entropy-stabilized relaxor multiferroicity in epitaxial hexagonal (Tb0.2Dy0.2Ho0.2Lu0.2Yb0.2)FeO3 thin films. Structural, magnetic, dielectric, and synchrotron spectroscopic measurements show the coexistence of relaxor ferroelectricity and long-range ferromagnetic order. We find that improper ferroelectricity remains robust against A-site configurational disorder, while the Fe sublattice preserves magnetic exchange. This separation of the microscopic origins of the polar and magnetic responses enables chemically disordered multiferroicity. Our results establish entropy engineering in hexagonal ferrites as a route toward multifunctional oxide thin films and provide a general design strategy for high-entropy multiferroics.

Spin transport modified by magnetic order

Spintronics has developed over the years from initially generating spin-polarized charge currents from exchange interaction in ferromagnets, into a more general concept, where electronic spin current can be generated and manipulated by spin–orbit interactions and in addition magnonic spin currents can occur in magnetically ordered materials even if they are insulating. Thus the interplay between spin transport and magnetic order has been a very active research field, which has developed many new ideas, such as thermal spin transport and electronic spin currents with unusual symmetries generated by magnetically ordered materials. This article discusses a few selected examples in order to illustrate some of the complexities that can be encountered in these systems. A particular focus is on the contributions from Chia-Ling Chien and his research group, who often explored many of the topics at the forefront of spintronics research, while critically examining unproven assumptions made by other researchers in the field.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_\chi$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Furthermore, our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Effect of iron vacancies on magnetic order and spin dynamics of the spin ladder BaFe 2-δ S 1.5 Se 1.5</sub

Quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenides possess various magnetic states depending on the lattice distortion, electronic correlations, and presence of defects. Here we present neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the spin ladder compound BaFe 2-δ S 1.5 Se 1.5 with ~6% iron vacancies. The data reveal that long-range magnetic order is absent, while the characteristic magnetic excitations that correspond to both the stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations are observed. First-principles calculations support the existence of both stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic short-range orders in the experimental sample. The disappearance of long-range magnetic order may be due to the competition between these two magnetic orders, which is greatly enhanced for a certain concentration of iron vacancies, which we calculate to be about 6%, consistent with the measured iron vacancy concentration. Our results highlight how iron vacancies in the iron-based spin ladder system strongly influence the magnetic ground state.

Second-order magnetic responses in quantum magnets: Magnetization under ac magnetic fields

Here we investigate second-order magnetic responses of quantum magnets against ac magnetic fields. We focus on the case where the z component of the spin is conserved in the unperturbed Hamiltonian and the driving field is applied in the xy plane. We find that linearly polarized driving fields induce a second-harmonic response, while circularly polarized fields generate only a zero-frequency response, leading to a magnetization with a direction determined by the helicity. Employing an unbiased numerical method, we demonstrate the nonlinear magnetic effect driven by the circularly polarized field in the XXZ model and show that the magnitude of the magnetization can be predicted by the dynamical spin structure factor in the linear response regime.

Magnetic ordering and structural distortion in PrFeAsO single crystal studied by neutron and x-ray scattering

We report the magnetic ordering and structural distortion in PrFeAsO crystals, the basis compound for one of the oxypnictide superconductors, using high-resolution x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). We find the structural tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition at T-S = 147K, the AFM phase transition of the Fe moments at T-Fe = 72K, and the Pr AFM phase transition at T-Pr = 21K. Combined high-resolution neutron diffraction and XRMS show unambiguously that the Pr moments point parallel to the longer orthorhombic a axis and order antiferromagnetically along the a axis but ferromagnetically along the b and c directions in the stripelike AFM order. The temperature-dependent magnetic order parameter of the Pr moments shows no evidence for a reorientation of moments.

Review of honeycomb-based Kitaev materials with zigzag magnetic ordering

The search for a Kitaev quantum spin liquid in crystalline magnetic materials has fueled intense interest in the two-dimensional honeycomb systems. Many promising candidate Kitaev systems are characterized by a long-range-ordered magnetic structure with an antiferromagnetic zigzag-type order, where the static moments form alternating ferromagnetic chains. Recent experiments on high-quality single crystals uncovered the existence of intriguing multi-k magnetic structures, which evolved from zigzag structures. Those discoveries have sparked new theoretical developments and amplified interest in these materials. We present an overview of the honeycomb materials known to display this type of magnetic structure and provide detailed crystallographic information for the possible single- and multi-k variants.

Tetrahedral triple-Q magnetic ordering and large spontaneous Hall conductivity in the metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co 1/3 TaS 2

The triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) has been the standard paradigm of frustrated magnetism for several decades. The most common magnetic ordering in insulating TLAFs is the 120° structure. However, a new triple-Q chiral ordering can emerge in metallic TLAFs, representing the short wavelength limit of magnetic skyrmion crystals. We report the metallic TLAF Co 1 / 3 TaS 2 as the first example of tetrahedral triple-Q magnetic ordering with the associated topological Hall effect (non-zero σ xy (H = 0)). We also present a theoretical framework that describes the emergence of this magnetic ground state, which is further supported by the electronic structure measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Additionally, our measurements of the inelastic neutron scattering cross section are consistent with the calculated dynamical structure factor of the tetrahedral triple-Q state.

Intertwined Topological and Magnetic Orders in Atomically Thin Chern Insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

The interplay between band topology and magnetic order plays a key role in quantum states of matter. MnBi 2 Te 4 , a van der Waals magnet, has recently emerged as an exciting platform for exploring Chern insulator physics. Its layered antiferromagnetic order was predicted to enable even-odd layer-number dependent topological states, supported by promising edge transport measurements. Furthermore, it becomes a Chern insulator when all spins are aligned by an applied magnetic field. However, the evolution of the bulk electronic structure as the magnetic state is continuously tuned and its dependence on layer number remains unexplored. Here, employing multimodal probes, we establish oneto-one correspondence between bulk electronic structure, magnetic state, topological order, and layer thickness in atomically thin MnBi 2 Te 4 devices. As the magnetic state is tuned through the canted magnetic phase, we observe a band crossing, i.e., the closing and reopening of the bulk bandgap, corresponding to the concurrent topological phase transition. Surprisingly, we find that the even- and odd-layer number devices exhibit a similar topological phase transition coupled to magnetic states, distinct from recent theoretical and experimental reports. Our findings shed new light on the interplay between band topology and magnetic order in this newly discovered topological magnet and validate the band crossing with concurrent measurements of topological invariant in a continuously tuned topological phase transition.

Successive magnetic orderings in the Ising spin chain magnet DyNi 5 Ge 3

In this report, we investigated a new rare-earth-based one-dimensional Ising spin chain magnet DyNi 5 Ge 3 by means of magnetization, specific heat, and powder neutron diffraction measurements. Due to the crystalline electrical field splitting, the magnetic Dy ions share an Ising-like ground doublet state. Owning to the local point symmetry, these Ising moments form into two canted magnetic sublattices, which were further confirmed by the angle-dependent magnetization measurement. In zero fields, two successive antiferromagnetic phase transitions were found at temperatures T N1 =6K and T N2 =5K, respectively. Only part of the moments are statically ordered in this intermediate state between T N1 and T N2 . Powder neutron diffraction experiments at different temperatures were performed as well. Further, an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector of k m =(0.5,0.4,0.5) was identified. The refined spin configurations through the irreducible representation analysis confirmed that these Ising spins are canted in the crystal ab plane.

Sudden Collapse of Magnetic Order in Oxygen-Deficient Nickelate Films

Antiferromagnetic order is a common and robust ground state in the parent (undoped) phase of several strongly correlated electron systems. The progressive weakening of antiferromagnetic correlations upon doping paves the way for a variety of emergent many-electron phenomena including unconventional superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and collective charge-spin-orbital ordering. In this study, we explored the use of oxygen stoichiometry as an alternative pathway to modify the coupled magnetic and electronic ground state in the family of rare earth nickelates ( RENiO 3 - x ). Using a combination of x-ray spectroscopy and resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering, we find that, while oxygen vacancies rapidly alter the electronic configuration within the Ni and O orbital manifolds, antiferromagnetic order is remarkably robust to substantial levels of carrier doping, only to suddenly collapse beyond 0.21 e - / Ni without an accompanying structural transition. Our work demonstrates that ordered magnetism in RENiO 3 - x is mostly insensitive to carrier doping up to significant levels unseen in other transition-metal oxides. The sudden collapse of ordered magnetism upon oxygen removal may provide a new mechanism for solid-state magnetoionic switching and new applications in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Magnetic order in the van der Waals magnet VCl 3

Here, we investigated the structural and magnetic properties of single-crystalline VCl 3 , a newly synthesized member of the vanadium trihalide family. High-quality single crystals were grown by the chemical vapor transport method, and their behavior was characterized using neutron diffraction and thermodynamic measurements. We show that VCl 3 crystallizes in the BiI 3 -type structure at room temperature and undergoes a structural phase transition at 𝑇 𝑆 = 103.7⁢(5)⁢K that lowers the lattice symmetry, followed by a zigzag antiferromagnetic order with a propagation vector 𝑘 = (0,0.5,1) below 𝑇 𝑁 = 21.8⁢(1)⁢K. Neutron diffraction experiments indicate that the ordered moments are canted by approximately 21° away from the 𝑐 axis toward the 𝑎 axis, yielding a total moment of approximately 1.09⁢(2) ⁢𝜇 B /V 3+ . Field-dependent magnetization along the 𝑐 axis exhibits a half magnetization plateau, indicative of a field-stabilized fractional state. These results establish VCl 3 as a new platform for exploring structural transitions, anisotropic magnetism, and field-induced phases in vanadium-based honeycomb magnets.
