Designing a Robust MEA-Based Post-Combustion Carbon Capture Process with Capture Rate Guarantees

This work presents an application of the nonlinear two-stage robust optimization solver PyROS to the model-based design and operation of a monoethanolamine scrubbing process for CO2 capture under epistemic uncertainty. Through this application, risk-averse process designs are successfully obtained for CO2 capture targets ranging from 90% to over 99%. In particular, the risk-averse solutions for CO2 capture targets of up to 98% are shown to be only marginally more expensive than their nominally optimal counterparts. Thus, the results demonstrate the utility of recently developed nonlinear robust optimization approaches for the solution of large-scale chemical process models under uncertainty.

Durable Fuel Cell MEA through Immobilization of Catalyst Particle and Membrane Chemical Stabilizer

For hydrogen-based fuel cell electric vehicle to be cost competitive with the incumbent diesel-powered internal combustion engine heavy-duty vehicle, the total cost of ownership of the truck must be decreased via both capital cost and the operating cost (H 2 fuel expense) reduction. This puts the emphasis on the decrease of fuel cell stack cost via use of low platinum catalyst material usage to decrease capital cost, high H 2 fuel efficiency and high stack durability to decrease the operating cost. US DOE has set a target of ≤ 0.25 mgPt/cm 2 total loading in the membrane electrode assembly, high fuel efficiency of > 68% and a HD-combined target of ≥ 2.5 kW/gPGM after running an accelerated stress test (AST) equivalent to 30,000 hours of heavy-duty fuel cell operation.

Meas. K+ -Ar Total Inelastic Cross Section at ProtoDUNE-SP

ProtoDUNE-SP is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber that took hadron test beam data in 2018. The test beam included positively charged kaons with test beam momenta of 6 GeV/c and 7 GeV/c, providing a sample to study kaons to benefit future DUNE proton decay and neutrino interaction studies with kaons in the final state. The total inelastic cross section of a positively charged kaon was measured at these test beam settings using the LArIAT thin-slice method of dividing the wires of the time projection chamber into target slices for calculating the cross section, which leverages the monolithic quality of liquid argon detectors. A Bayesian-like unfolding method using RooUnfold was applied to both the incident and interacting slice distributions to measure the cross sections at both test beam momenta. The talk will discuss the method of unfolding, optimization studies for unfolding, and applying systematic uncertainties using a LArIAT-style hadronic cross section using unfolding to extract a kaon total inelastic cross section.

Traffic model for commercial payloads in the Materials Experiment Assembly (MEA)

One hundred individuals representing universities, technical institutes, government agencies, and industrial facilities were surveyed to determine potential commercial use of a self-contained, automated assembly for the space processing of materials during frequent shuttle flights for the 1981 to 1987 period. The approach used and the results of the study are summarized. A time time-phased projection (traffic model) of commercial usage of the materials experiment assembly is provided.

Low-gravity experiments on Liquid Phase Miscibility Gap (LPMG) alloys: Materials Experiments Assembly (MEA)

Space shuttle experiments which study the massive separation which occurred during sounding rocket Al-In alloy tests are described. The gradient cool experiment studies surface tension driven droplet migration and particle pushing in an LPMG alloy. Isothermal experiments on the Te-Tl alloys test the hypothesis that LPMG systems with low surface energies produce relatively fine, and uniform emulsions and dispersions. It also examines the effect of droplet concentration on phase separation kinetics. Isothermal plunger experiments on Al-In alloys determine whether surface tension driven convection currents originating at a free surface contribute to massive separation. They ascertain whether In-rich droplets migrate under the action of a temperature gradient when they are not influenced by the crucible walls.

Modelling of the MEA float zone using accelerometer data

During a floating zone experiment involving the growth of indium on a recent orbiter mission, (STS 32) oscillation of the zone shapes were observed to occur in response to the background acceleration. An understanding of the nature of the response of the zone shape to forced (g-jitter) oscillations and predictions of its impact on future experiments is of great interest not only to the PI's but to other commercial and academic investigators who plan to fly similar experiments in the orbiter and on space station. Motivated by this, a 15 month study was undertaken to analyze the nature of the g-sensitivity of the STS 32 floating zone crystal growth experiment. Numerical models were used to describe the time-dependent free surface motion of the zone as it responds to the spacecraft residual acceleration. Relevant experimental data concerning the acceleration environment was obtained from the Honeywell in Space Accelerometer (HISA) investigators through MSFC's ACAP program and processed and analyzed. For the indium floating zone experiment, a series of calculations were made using time-dependent axial accelerations g(t). The form of g(t) included simple sinusoidal disturbances as well as actual data (subject to appropriate filtering) measured on the STS 32 mission. Focus was on the calculation of the response of the free surface of the zone as well as the internal flows and internal heat transfer. The influence of solidification on the response of the zone shape was also examined but found to be negligible.

Techno-Economic Analysis and Optimization of Integrated NGCC-MEA System at High CO2 Capture Levels

This poster contains preliminary results for an ongoing analysis of modeling and optimization of an NGCC plant with a solvent-based CO2 capture system with high levels of CO2 capture – up to and beyond net-zero emissions. The work was performed to understand the incremental cost of high capture in order to compare with direct-air capture and other net-negative technologies, as well as to understand optimal operation and design of the CCS unit to achieve high capture with minimal increase in cost.
