Gate-Tunable Phonon Magnetic Moment in Bilayer Graphene

Here we develop a first-principles quantum scheme to calculate the phonon magnetic moment in solids. As a showcase example, we apply our method to study gated bilayer graphene, a material with strong covalent bonds. According to the classical theory based on the Born effective charge, the phonon magnetic moment in this system should vanish, yet our quantum mechanical calculations find significant phonon magnetic moments. Furthermore, the magnetic moment is highly tunable by changing the gate voltage. Our results firmly establish the necessity of the quantum mechanical treatment, and identify small-gap covalent materials as a promising platform for studying tunable phonon magnetic moment.

Measuring the Muon Neutrino Magnetic Moment in the NOvA Near Detector

Measuring an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment would be a clear indication of physics beyond the Standard Model, shedding light on the correct beyond Standard Model theory or the potential Majorana nature of neutrinos. It would manifest in the NOvA near detector as an excess of neutrino-on-electron elastic scattering interactions at low electron recoil energies. Leveraging an intense and highly pure muon neutrino beam, along with a finely segmented liquid scintillator detector technology specifically designed for electromagnetic shower separation, enables NOvA to achieve a potentially world-leading sensitivity in probing the effective muon neutrino magnetic moment. This analysis, based on neutrino data collected between 2014 and 2021, corresponding to an exposure of $13.8\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target, yields a result consistent with the Standard Model-only hypothesis with a p-value of 0.31. An upper limit on the effective muon neutrino magnetic moment is set at $\mu_{\nu_\mu}<19.1\times 10^{-10}\mu_B$ at $90\%$ confidence level. Despite facing statistical limitations stemming from low cross section of the signal process, systematic uncertainties have a significant impact on this result. To address these challenges, the NOvA Test Beam experiment focuses on mitigating some of the largest systematic uncertainties within NOvA by investigating particle interactions and energy deposition in a small-scale replica NOvA detector. This thesis describes the calibration of the NOvA Test Beam detector, which is a crucial step in analysing the Test Beam data before they can be utilised to reduce NOvA systematic uncertainties.

Gauge theory of giant phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals

Here, we develop a quantitative theory of phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals. Our theory is based on an emergent gauge field approach to the electron-phonon coupling, applicable to gapless systems. We find that the magnetic moment is directly proportional to the electrical Hall conductivity through the phonon Hall viscosity. Our theory is combined with the first-principles calculations, allowing us to quantitatively implement it to realistic materials. Magnetic moments are found to be of the order of a Bohr magneton for Raman-active phonon modes in graphene and Cd 3 ⁢As 2 . Our results provide practical guidance for the dynamical generation of large magnetization in quantum materials.

Study of the Neutrino Magnetic Moment with the NOvA Near Detector

Predicted by the Standard Model as theoretical, massless particles, neutrinos have been the subject of many experiments since their first detection. It is now experimentally confirmed that neutrinos do have mass necessitating an extension to the Standard Model. Such an extension allows for other surprising neutrino properties, such as a neutrino magnetic moment. While neutrinos are observed to be neutral and do not couple to photons at leading order, higher order expansion of the interaction allows for coupling to the photon to occur and gives rise to a neutrino magnetic moment through quantum loop effects. This is a useful property for studying the Dirac or Majorana nature of neutrinos, as the predicted value of the magnetic moment would differ. This talk focuses on an introduction to the neutrino magnetic moment as well as discusses the current status of work being done on NOvA utilizing the Near Detector to obtain an upper limit on the neutrino magnetic moment value.

Origin of Large Effective Phonon Magnetic Moments in Monolayer MoS 2

Recent helicity-resolved magneto-Raman spectroscopy measurement demonstrates large effective phonon magnetic moments of ~2.5 μ B in monolayer MoS 2 , highlighting resonant excitation of bright excitons as a feasible route to activate Γ-point circularly polarized phonons in transition metal dichalcogenides. However, a microscopic picture of this intriguing phenomenon remains lacking. In this work, we show that an orbital transition between the split conduction bands (Δ 0 = 4 meV) of MoS 2 couples to the doubly degenerate E" phonon mode (Ω 0 = 33 meV), forming two hybridized states. Our phononic and electronic Raman scattering measurements capture these two states: (i) one with predominantly phonon contribution in the helicity-switched channels and (ii) one with primarily orbital contribution in the helicity-conserved channels. An orbital-phonon coupling model successfully reproduces the large effective magnetic moments of the circularly polarized phonons and explains their thermodynamic properties. Strikingly, the Raman mode from the orbital transition is superimposed on a strong quasi-elastic scattering background, indicating the presence of spin fluctuations. As a result, the electrons excited to the conduction bands through the exciton exhibit paramagnetic behavior although MoS 2 is generally considered as a nonmagnetic material. By depositing nanometer-thickness nickel thin films on monolayer MoS 2 , we tune the electronic structure so that the A exciton perfectly overlaps with the 633 nm laser. The optimization of resonance excitation leads to pronounced tunability of the orbital-phonon hybridized states. Our results generalize the orbital-phonon coupling model of effective phonon magnetic moments to material systems beyond the paramagnets and magnets.

Leptonic anomalous magnetic moments in ν SMEFT

We investigate contributions to the anomalous magnetic moments of charged leptons in the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory (νSMEFT). We discuss how νSMEFT operators can contribute to a lepton’s magnetic moment at one- and two-loop order. We show that only one operator can account for existing electronic and muonic discrepancies, assuming new physics appears above 1 TeV. In particular, we find that a right-handed charged current in combination with minimal sterile-active mixing can explain the discrepancy for sterile neutrino masses of $\mathcal{O}$(100) GeV while avoiding direct and indirect constraints. We discuss how searches for sterile neutrino production at the (HL-)LHC, measurements of h → μ + μ - and searches for h → e + e - , neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, and improved unitarity tests of the CKM matrix can further probe the relevant parameter space.

Magnetic Moment of Proton Drip-Line Nucleus (9)C

The magnetic moment of the proton drip-line nucleus C-9(I(sup (pi)) = 3/2, T(sub 1/2) = 126 ms) has been measured for the first time, using the beta-NMR detection technique with polarized radioactive beams. The measure value for the magnetic moment is 1mu(C-9)! = 1.3914 +/- 0.0005 (mu)N. The deduced spin expectation value of 1.44 is unusually larger than any other ones of even-odd nuclei.

Muon g -2 anomaly and neutrino magnetic moments

We show that a unified framework based on an SU(2) H horizontal symmetry which generates a naturally large neutrino transition magnetic moment and explains the XENON1T electron recoil excess also predicts a positive shift in the muon anomalous magnetic moment. This shift is of the right magnitude to be consistent with the Brookhaven measurement as well as the recent Fermilab measurement of the muon g-2. A relatively light neutral scalar from a Higgs doublet with mass near 100 GeV contributes to muon g-2, while its charged partner induces the neutrino magnetic moment. In contrast to other multi-scalar theories, in the model presented here there is no freedom to control the sign and strength of the muon g-2 contribution. We analyze the collider tests of this framework and find that the HL-LHC can probe the entire parameter space of these models.

Study of the Neutrino Magnetic Moment with the NOvA Near Detector

The NuMI Off-Axis νe Appearance (NOvA) Experiment is a long baseline neutrino experiment consisting of two detectors, a Near Detector (ND) at Fermilab in Batavia, IL, and a Far Detector (FD) in Ash River, MN. The ND observes the unoscillated neutrino beam while the FD is able to observe neutrinos which have oscillated. Because the ND does not observe oscillated neutrinos, it works in tandem with the FD to provide control measurements. However, the ND has independent physics goals, such as observing processes which lead to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). One such process is the existence of a neutrino magnetic moment. At leading order, neutrinos do not interact electromagnetically, but, by considering higher order perturbative effects, it becomes possible for neutrinos to have an effective coupling with a photon and a non-zero neutrino magnetic moment emerges. Measurement of the neutrino magnetic moment can aid in the process of determining if neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana fermions, as well as provide insights into BSM physics. In this talk, we discuss the NOvA ND’s capabilities for making a direct measurement of the neutrino magnetic moment.

Large neutrino magnetic moments in the light of recent experiments

The excess in electron recoil events reported recently by the XENON1T experiment may be interpreted as evidence for a sizable transition magnetic moment μ v e v μ of Majorana neutrinos. We show the consistency of this scenario when a single component transition magnetic moment takes values μ v e v μ ∈(1.65-3.42) x 10 -11 μ B . Such a large value typically leads to unacceptably large neutrino masses. In this paper we show that new leptonic symmetries can solve this problem and demonstrate this with several examples. We first revive and then propose a simplified model based on SU(2) H horizontal symmetry. Owing to the difference in their Lorentz structures, in the SU(2) H symmetric limit, mν vanishes while μ v e v μ is nonzero. Our simplified model is based on an approximate SU(2) H , which we also generalize to a three family SU(3)H-symmetry. Collider and low energy tests of these models are analyzed. We have also analyzed implications of the XENON1T data for the Zee model and its extensions which naturally generate a large μ v e v μ with suppressed m ν via a spin symmetry mechanism, but found that the induced μ v e v μ is not large enough to explain recent data. Finally, we suggest a mechanism to evade stringent astrophysical limits on neutrino magnetic moments arising from stellar evolution by inducing a medium-dependent mass for the neutrino.

Magnetic moments and angular momenta of stars and planets

Using published data on magnetic fields, radii, masses, and rotation, we have compiled a data set of magnetic moments mu and angular momenta L for stars and planets. In our subsample of hotter stars (classes A, B, and O), there are 171 objects. In the subsample of cooler stars (classes F, G, K, and M), there are 54 objects. We include 33 white dwarfs, of which 19 are in cataclysmic variables. The pulsar subsample contains 32 pulsars in binaries and 429 isolated pulsars. Som subsamples exhibit significant empirical correlations between log mu and log L. For the hot and cool stars, the correlations are positive. However, the hot-star correlation is significantly shallower than for the cool stars. In the solar system subsample, the correlation has essentially the same slope as for the cool stars, although the magnetic moments are two to three orders of magnitude smaller for the solar system objects at a given L value. For isolated white dwarfs, the correlations are weak or absent. Pulsars and white dwarfs in close binaries show strong negative correlations: the results are quantitatively consistent with magnetically enforced synchronism with the orbital period. When we consider the centers of gravity of the different subsamples of objects, a significant positive correlation appears between log mu and log L.

Local magnetic moments due to loop currents in metals

We present Hartree-Fock calculations on a simple model to obtain the conditions of formation of local magnetic moments due to loop currents $L$ $o$ and spin-loop currents $L$ $s$ and compare them to the conditions of formation of local spin moments $M$ which were given long ago in a similar approximation by Anderson. A model with three degenerate orbitals sitting on an equilateral triangle, with on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsions $U$ and $V$, respectively, and intersite kinetic energy, hybridizing with conduction electrons with a parameter $Δ$ is investigated. $L$ $o$ and $L$ $s$ are promoted by large $V$/$Δ$ and their magnitude is relatively unaffected by $U$/$Δ$. Spin-magnetic moments $M$ promoted by large $U$/$Δ$ on the other hand are adversely affected by $V$/$Δ$. In this model, $L$ $o$ for $V$ multiplied by the number of neighbors is approximately the same as the $M$ promoted by $U$ in Anderson’s local model for $M$. $L$ $o$ and $L$ $s$ are degenerate if exchange interactions and Hund’s rule are neglected but $L$ $o$ is favored when they are included. Many of the qualitative results are visible in an expression for the Hartree-Fock ground state energy derived as a function of small $L$ $o$ , $L$ $s$ , and $M$. Numerical minimization of the Hartree-Fock energy is presented for larger values. Additionally, we also briefly discuss the connection and differences of the interaction-generated orbital currents and spin currents discussed here and generalized to a lattice with the topological states in metals and semiconductors.

Emergence of Local Magnetic Moment in Ternary TaWSe 2 Single Crystal via Atomic Clustering

Ternary transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a versatile platform to explore novel electronic and magnetic ground states via compositional substitution and local structural modulations. Using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S), magnetic property measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the emergence of local magnetic moments driven by the clustering of Ta atoms in ternary TaWSe 2 single crystals is analyzed. STM topography reveals triangular clusters of Ta atoms embedded within W-rich regions of TaWSe 2 . These clusters exhibit a consistent shape and an orderly arrangement throughout the surfaces. DFT calculations show that these Ta clusters induce local strain, giving rise to localized magnetic moments. The magnetic behavior is further corroborated by temperature-dependent magnetization measurements, which exhibit a magnetic anomaly at ∼50 K. In conclusion, this study offers a pathway to engineer magnetism in TMD systems with potential applications in spintronic and quantum materials.
