Dynamics of skyrmion contraction and expansion in a magnetic film

Contraction and expansion of skyrmions in ferromagnetic films are investigated. In centrosymmetric systems, the dynamics of a collapsing skyrmion is driven by dissipation. The collapse time has a minimum on the damping constant. In systems with broken inversion symmetry, the evolution of skyrmions toward equilibrium size is driven by the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. As a result, expressions describing the time dependence of the skyrmion size are derived and their implications for skyrmion-based information processing are discussed.

dc modulation noise in thin film magnetic recording disk media

A study of dc modulation noise as a function of magnetic layer thickness has been conducted for plated longitudinal low-noise Co-alloy disk media with a range of 900 to 1100 Oe. The noise, produced by the application of a reverse longitudinal dc field to a uniformly magnetized disk, supplies data regarding the uniformity of the disk. A spectrum analyzer measures the noise by means of electronic detection, and noise spectra and autocorrelation functions calculated with a model are compared to the experimental results. The model correlates with experimental data to more than 0.99. The maximum distance between effective transitions diminishes from 2.8 microns to 1 micron when the thickness of the magnetic layer is increased from 25 nm to 60 nm. The maximum average transition amplitude is found to be independent of thickness, and is bounded by 0.001 of the saturation magnetization.

Magnetostriction and temperature dependent Gilbert damping in boron doped Fe 80 ⁢Ga 20 thin films

Magnetic thin films with strong magnetoelastic coupling and low Gilbert damping are key materials for many magnetoelectric devices. Here, we investigated the effects of boron doping concentration on magnetostriction and temperature dependent Gilbert damping in magnetron sputtered (Fe 80 ⁢Ga 20 ) 1−𝑥 ⁢B 𝑥 films. A crystalline to amorphous structural transition was observed for a boron content near 8% and coincided with a decrease in coercivity from 76 Oe to 3 Oe. A 10% doping concentration is optimal for achieving both large magnetostriction of 48.8 ppm and low Gilbert damping of 6×10 −3 . The temperature dependence of the damping shows an increase at low temperatures with a peak around 40 K, and we associate the relative increase Δ⁢𝛼/𝛼 RT with magnetoelastic contributions to the damping, which has a maximum of 55.7% at 8% boron. An increase in the inhomogeneous linewidth broadening was observed in the structural transition regime at about 8% boron concentration. Furthermore, this study suggests that incorporation of glass forming elements, in this case boron, into Fe 80 ⁢Ga 20 is a practical pathway for simultaneously achieving enhanced magnetoelastic coupling and reduced Gilbert damping.

Switching of Magnetic Order via Non‐Magnetic Al Addition in FeCoNiMnAl x Films

Magnetic high entropy alloys (HEAs) consisting of 3 d transition metals offer an exciting platform to explore novel magnetic phases as they often house competing exchange interactions in combination with random site disorders. In this work, a sensitive and tunable magnetic order is demonstrated in sputtered single-layer FeCoNiMnAl x films, as a function of non-magnetic Al addition, along with an unexpected exchange bias effect. Thin films of 50 nm FeCoNiMn exhibit a face-centered-cubic ( fcc ) phase, reentrant spin glass (SG) transition near 100 K, and a large exchange bias of over 500 Oe after field-cooling to 5 K. The exchange bias is increased to 930 Oe through a small addition of 5 at.% Al. Further Al addition to 12 at.% results in a body-centered-cubic ( bcc ) phase, coinciding with a large increase in the saturation magnetization, decrease of exchange bias to 50 Oe, and suppression of SG behavior. The change in magnetic order across the Al-induced structural transformation is mediated by the switching of Mn ground state from AF to FM, which is supported by first-principles calculations and experimentally confirmed via X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. These results open up new HEA strategies for explorations of novel magnetic phases.

Automated imaging of the annihilation of a transverse domain wall in patterned magnetic thin films

Imaging the magnetic domain wall behavior in patterned thin films under external stimuli can enable understanding the underlying energy landscape and the role of local microstructure and defects. We present an automated workflow for in situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy to image magnetic domain walls at the nanometer length scale and at a time resolution in the sub-millisecond regime—the latter of which is limited by the speed of the available camera. Our workflow is modular and can be broadly applied to various types of in situ experiments, taking us a step closer to the future of autonomous imaging of nanomagnetic films with electron microscopy. Using our workflow, we show the transformation of a transverse domain wall with sub-millisecond time resolution under the application of an in situ transverse magnetic field, a study of whose dynamics are essential in the design of future domain wall mediated spintronic device applications.

Development of neutron spin-phase imaging for amorphous magnetic thin film investigation

Neutron spin-phase imaging (NSPI) capability was developed to study the magnetization distribution of an amorphous magnetic thin film. The local magnetization under different applied magnetic fields between 0.09 and 1.36 mT was investigated. The developed radio frequency flippers showed more than 95% flipping efficiency under these fields. A spatial resolution of ~0.4 mm and field of view of ~24 mm x 27 mm were achieved. In conclusion, the bulk property of the random distributions of the magnetization and magnetic field distribution ranging between ~1.1 and 1.4 T were observed showing that NSPI is a useful technique for investigating the spatial dependence of magnetic properties of amorphous magnetic thin films.

Tuning magnetic and optical properties through strain in epitaxial LaCrO 3 thin films

We report on the effect of epitaxial strain on magnetic and optical properties of perovskite LaCrO 3 (LCO) single crystal thin films. Epitaxial LCO thin films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on proper choice of substrates to impose different strain states. A combined experimental and theoretical approach is used to demonstrate the direct correlation between lattice-strain and functional properties. The magnetization results show that the lattice anisotropy plays a critical role in controlling the magnetic behavior of LCO films. The strain induced tetragonality in the film lattice strongly affects the optical transitions and charge transfer gap in LCO. This study opens possibilities to tailor the functional properties of LCO and related materials by strain engineering in epitaxial growth.

Sign-tunable anomalous Hall effect induced by two-dimensional symmetry-protected nodal structures in ferromagnetic perovskite thin films

Magnetism and spin-orbit coupling are two quintessential ingredients underlying topological transport phenomena in itinerant ferromagnets. When spin-polarized bands support nodal points/lines with band degeneracy that can be lifted by spin-orbit coupling, the nodal structures become a source of Berry curvature, leading to a large anomalous Hall effect. However, two-dimensional systems can possess stable nodal structures only when proper crystalline symmetry exists. Here, in this study, we show that two-dimensional spin-polarized band structures of perovskite oxides generally support symmetry-protected nodal lines and points that govern both the sign and the magnitude of the anomalous Hall effect. To demonstrate this, we performed angle-resolved photoemission studies of ultrathin films of SrRuO 3 , a representative metallic ferromagnet with spin-orbit coupling. We show that the sign-changing anomalous Hall effect upon variation in the film thickness, magnetization and chemical potential can be well explained by theoretical models. Our work may facilitate new switchable devices based on ferromagnetic ultrathin films.

Chirality-induced zigzag domain wall in in-plane magnetized ultrathin films

In this report the domain structure in in-plane magnetized Fe/Ni/W(110) films is investigated using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy. A novel transition of the domain wall shape from a zigzaglike pattern to straight is observed as a function of the film thickness, which is triggered by the transition of the domain wall type from the out-of-plane chiral wall to the in-plane Néel wall. The contribution of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to the wall energy is proposed to explain the transition of the domain wall shape, which is supported by Monte Carlo simulations.

Preparation of dilute magnetic semiconductor films by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition

A method for preparation of a dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) film is provided, wherein a Group II metal source, a Group VI metal source and a transition metal magnetic ion source are pyrolyzed in the reactor of a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) system by contact with a heated substrate. As an example, the preparation of films of Cd.sub.1-x Mn.sub.x Te, wherein 0.ltoreq..times..ltoreq.0.7, on suitable substrates (e.g., GaAs) is described. As a source of manganese, tricarbonyl (methylcyclopentadienyl) maganese (TCPMn) is employed. To prevent TCPMn condensation during the introduction thereof int the reactor, the gas lines, valves and reactor tubes are heated. A thin-film solar cell of n-i-p structure, wherein the i-type layer comprises a DMS, is also described; the i-type layer is suitably prepared by MOCVD.
