Quantum many-body scars in a Landau level on a thin torus

We review a kinetically constrained pair-hopping model that arises within a Landau level in the quantum Hall effect. At filling ν = 1/3, the model exactly maps onto the so-called “PXP model,” a constrained model for the Rydberg atom chain that is numerically known to exhibit ETH-violating states in the middle of the spectrum or quantum many-body scars. Indeed, particular charge density wave configurations exhibit the same revivals seen in the PXP model. We generalize the mapping to fillings factors ν = p/(2p+1), and show that the model is equivalent to nonintegrable spin chains within particular constrained Krylov Hilbert spaces. These lead to new examples of quantum many-body scars which manifest as revivals and slow thermalization of particular charge density wave states. Finally, we investigate the stability of the quantum scars under certain Hamiltonian perturbations motivated by the fractional quantum Hall physics.

Interlayer Exciton Condensates between Second Landau Level Orbitals in Double Bilayer Graphene

Here, we present Coulomb-drag measurements on a heterostructure comprising two Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) sheets separated by a 2.5 nm hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) spacer in the quantum Hall (QH) regime. Using top and bottom gate control, together with an interlayer bias, we independently tune the two BLG layers into either the lowest (N = 0) or second (N = 1) Landau level (LL) orbital and probe their interlayer QH states. When both layers occupy the N = 0 orbital, we observe both interlayer exciton condensates (ECs) at integer total filling and interlayer fractional QH states, echoing the results in double monolayer graphene. In contrast to previous studies, however, when both BLG layers occupy the N = 1 orbital, we also observe quantized drag signals, signifying an interlayer exciton condensate formed between the second LLs. By tuning the layer degree of freedom, we find that this N = 1 EC state arises only when the N = 1 wave function in each BLG is polarized toward the hBN interface to maximize the interlayer Coulomb interaction.

Higher Vortexability: Zero-Field Realization of Higher Landau Levels

The rise of moiré materials has led to experimental realizations of integer and FCIs in small or vanishing magnetic fields. At the same time, a set of minimal conditions sufficient to guarantee an Abelian fractional state in a flat band were identified, namely “ideal" or “vortexable" quantum geometry. Such vortexable bands share essential features with the LLL, while excluding the need for more fine-tuned aspects such as flat Berry curvature. A natural and important generalization is to ask if such conditions can be extended to capture the quantum geometry of higher Landau levels, particularly the first (1LL), where non-Abelian states at ν = 1/2, 2/5 are known to be competitive. The possibility of realizing these states at zero magnetic field, and perhaps even more exotic ones, could become a reality if we could identify the essential structure of the 1LL in Chern bands. In this work, we introduce a precise definition of 1LL quantum geometry, along with a figure of merit that measures how closely a given band approaches the 1LL. Furthermore, periodically strained Bernal graphene is shown to realize such a 1LL structure even in zero magnetic field.

Thermoelectric transport of the half-filled lowest Landau level in a p -type Ge/SiGe heterostructure

In this work, we investigate the thermoelectric transport properties of the half-filled lowest Landau level v = 1 / 2 in a gated two-dimensional hole system in a strained Ge/SiGe heterostructure. The electron-diffusion dominated regime is achieved below 600 mK, where the diffusion thermopower S x x d at v = 1 / 2 shows a linear temperature dependence. In contrast, the diffusion-dominated Nernst signal S x y d of v = 1 / 2 is found to approach zero, which is independent of the measurement configuration (sweeping magnetic field at a fixed hole density or sweeping the density by a gate at a fixed magnetic field).

Anomalous Landau Level Gaps Near Magnetic Transitions in Monolayer WSe 2

First-order phase transitions produce abrupt changes to the character of both ground and excited electronic states. Here we conduct electronic compressibility measurements to map the spin phase diagram and Landau level (LL) energies of monolayer WSe 2 in a magnetic field. We resolve a sequence of first-order phase transitions between completely spin-polarized LLs and states with LLs of both spins. Unexpectedly, the LL gaps are roughly constant over a wide range of magnetic fields below the transitions, which we show reflects spin-polarized ground states with opposite spin excitations. These transitions also extend into compressible regimes, with a sawtooth boundary between full and partial spin polarization. We link these observations to the important influence of LL filling on the exchange energy beyond a smooth density-dependent contribution. Our results show that WSe 2 realizes a unique hierarchy of energy scales where such effects induce reentrant magnetic phase transitions tuned by density and magnetic field. Topological magnon band structure of emergent Landau levels in a skyrmion lattice

We report the motion of a spin excitation across topologically nontrivial magnetic order exhibits a deflection that is analogous to the effect of the Lorentz force on an electrically charged particle in an orbital magnetic field. We used polarized inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the propagation of magnons (i.e., bosonic collective spin excitations) in a lattice of skyrmion tubes in manganese silicide. For wave vectors perpendicular to the skyrmion tubes, the magnon spectra are consistent with the formation of finely spaced emergent Landau levels that are characteristic of the fictitious magnetic field used to account for the nontrivial topological winding of the skyrmion lattice. This provides evidence of a topological magnon band structure in reciprocal space, which is borne out of the nontrivial real-space topology of a magnetic order.

Terahertz Landau level spectroscopy of Dirac fermions in millimeter-scale twisted bilayer graphene

Exotic electronic physics including correlated insulating states and fractional Chern insulators have been observed in twisted bilayer graphene in a magnetic field when the Fermi velocity vanishes; however, a question remains as to the stability of these states, which is controlled by the gap to the first excited state. Free-space terahertz magneto-optics can directly probe the gap to charge excitations, which bounds the stability of electronic states, but this measurement has thus far been inaccessible due to the micron size of twisted bilayer graphene samples, while the wavelength of terahertz light is up to 1 mm. Here we leverage advances in fabrication to create twisted bilayer graphene samples over 5×5 mm in size with a uniform twist angle and study the magnetic field dependence of the cyclotron resonance by a complex Faraday rotation experiment in 𝑝-doped large angle twisted bilayer graphene. These measurements directly probe charge excitations in inter-Landau level transitions and determine the Fermi velocity as a function of twist angle.

Entropy of Strongly Correlated Electrons in a Partially Filled Landau Level

We use high-resolution chemical potential measurements to extract the entropy of monolayer and bilayer graphene in the quantum Hall regime via the Maxwell relation [(𝑑⁢𝜇)/(𝑑⁢𝑇)]| 𝑁 =−[(𝑑⁢𝑆)/(𝑑⁢𝑁)]| 𝑇 . Measuring the entropy from 𝑇 = 300 K down to 𝑇 = 200 mK, we identify the sequential emergence of quantum Hall ferromagnetism, fractional quantum Hall states, and various charge orders by comparing the measured entropy in different temperature regimes with theoretical models. At the lowest temperature of 𝑇 ≈ 200 mK we perform a detailed study of the entropy near even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in bilayer graphene, and comment on the possible topological origin of the observed excess entropy.
