Effectiveness of street trees in reducing air temperature and outdoor heat exposure in Las Vegas

Urban greening and especially tree planting strategies are being widely planned and implemented to mitigate urban overheating and thermal stress in many urban areas. However, the effectiveness of these strategies depends on multiple factors, including urban morphology, environmental conditions, and tree characteristics. This study investigates the effects of street tree planting strategies on air temperature and outdoor heat exposure in Las Vegas by combining an urbanized mesoscale climate model coupled to a multi-layer street tree model (Weather Research and Forecasting-BEP-Tree; Δ x = 900 m) with a microscale pedestrian heat exposure model (Temperatures of Urban Facets for Pedestrian; Δ x = 1 m). A series of simulations are conducted for July and August 2022. Large city-wide increases of a drought tolerant tree species cool air temperature mainly during the nighttime (up to 1.5 °C), with daytime effects being limited due to leaves shedding sensible instead of latent heat as stomata close in response to high vapor pressure deficits. Increased evaporative cooling is achieved with a different tree species (double at night, and reaching 0.4 °C during the day), but water requirements increase threefold. Despite their relatively small effect on air temperature during the day, trees provide significant shade by intercepting solar radiation, reducing mean radiant temperature (up to 16 °C) and enhancing outdoor thermal comfort, a major benefit of street trees in hot arid climates. The nighttime cooling of trees and the daytime reduction of radiant loading show potential to reduce the heat-related health impacts. Our results highlight the need to evaluate the effects of street trees on a case-by-case basis.

Solar hot water system installed at Las Vegas, Nevada

A solar energy hot water system installed in a motor inn at Las Vegas, Nevada is described. The inn is a three story building with a flat roof for installation of the solar panels. The system consists of 1,200 square feet of liquid flat plate collectors, a 2,500 gallon insulated vertical steel storage tank, two heat exchangers, and pumps and controls. The system was designed to supply approximately 74 percent of the total hot water load.

Morphological and physical characteristics of the Virgo Cluster - First results from the Las Campanas photographic survey

Preliminary results are presented of a photographic survey of the Virgo cluster to the faintest convenient limit of the Las Campanas du Pont 2.5 m reflector, performed in order to study the complexity of both the surface and velocity distributions within the central 6 degree radius region. The survey is described and the resulting Catalog is discussed, and the frequency of galaxy types found and listed in the Catalog is described. The physical properties of the dwarfs are summarized, and luminosity functions are given separately for each morphological type. The progressive change of (MBT) faintward along the morphological sequence from Sc I through Sm and Im types is shown, leading to a calibration of the de Vaucouleurs Lambda luminosity index and a determination of its intrinsic dispersion. The preliminary results on the distribution of galaxies of all types in the two principal subclustering regions found are summarized, and the velocity distributions over the face of the 6 degree core are discussed for the various galaxy types.

More confirmed damped Lyman-Alpha systems from the Las Campanas/Palomar survey

We present moderate-resolution spectra of six high-redshift quasars which contain nine candidate damped Lyman alpha absorption systems identified in the Las Campanas/Palomar survey of Lanzetta et al. (ApJS, 77, 1 (1991)). Eight of the nine candidate damped Lyman alpha absorption systems are confirmed (one tentative), including seven with N(H I) greater than or equal to 2 x 10(exp 20) /sq cm. The remaining one turns out to be due to blending of many narrow absorption lines. Accurate absorption redshifts, H I column densities, and metal-line equivalent widths are provided for these systems in order to facilitate future studies of detailed physical condition and chemical abundances. We briefly discuss the 18 other metal-line systems identified along these sight lines. The z(sub abs) = 2.6527 system toward Q 2231-00 is interesting in that it shows strong O VI (lambda) (lambda) 1031, 1037 absorption. The O VI ion is one of the best diagnostics of hot gas, and high resolution studies of the O VI absorption is likely to yield important clues regarding the ionization mechanism of the metal-line systems. Another system, at z(sub abs) = 2.3771 toward Q 2239-38, shows relatively strong Zn II and Cr II absorption, clearly indicating that it belongs to the same class absorbers as the damped Lyman systems. We have not obtained metal abundances for this system because the H(sub I) column density is not available. We also find a Lyman limit absorption system at z(sub abs)= 3.5090 toward Q 2239-38 which does not show obvious metal absorption lines. More sensitive observations are required to check on this interesting possibility.

Infrared Camera Characterization of Bi-Propellant Reaction Control Engines during Auxiliary Propulsion Systems Tests at NASA's White Sands Test Facility in Las Cruces, New Mexico

This paper describes the application of a FUR Systems A40M infrared (IR) digital camera for thermal monitoring of a Liquid Oxygen (LOX) and Ethanol bi-propellant Reaction Control Engine (RCE) during Auxiliary Propulsion System (APS) testing at the National Aeronautics & Space Administration's (NASA) White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) near Las Cruces, New Mexico. Typically, NASA has relied mostly on the use of ThermoCouples (TC) for this type of thermal monitoring due to the variability of constraints required to accurately map rapidly changing temperatures from ambient to glowing hot chamber material. Obtaining accurate real-time temperatures in the JR spectrum is made even more elusive by the changing emissivity of the chamber material as it begins to glow. The parameters evaluated prior to APS testing included: (1) remote operation of the A40M camera using fiber optic Firewire signal sender and receiver units; (2) operation of the camera inside a Pelco explosion proof enclosure with a germanium window; (3) remote analog signal display for real-time monitoring; (4) remote digital data acquisition of the A40M's sensor information using FUR's ThermaCAM Researcher Pro 2.8 software; and (5) overall reliability of the system. An initial characterization report was prepared after the A40M characterization tests at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to document controlled heat source comparisons to calibrated TCs. Summary IR digital data recorded from WSTF's APS testing is included within this document along with findings, lessons learned, and recommendations for further usage as a monitoring tool for the development of rocket engines.
