Increasing Power Generation at the Patua Nevada Geothermal Field through Targeted and Adaptive EGS

In 2020, Patua Acquisition Company LLC, submitted the proposal “Increasing Power Generation at the Patua Nevada Geothermal Field through Targeted and Adaptive EGS”, in response to the DOE’s Geothermal Wells of Opportunity Funding Opportunity Announcement. The primary goal of the project was to convert an idle well, Patua 16-29, to an active producer and generate at least an additional 5 MWe at the Patua plant. The project was intended to provide an example of a reproducible methodology for well stimulation in Enhanced Geothermal Systems The project was proposed to be performed in three phases over a period of performance of four years. A first project go/no-go decision was made at the end of Phase 1 based on feasibility of the wellbore, site, and ability to realize a 5 MWe benefit from the project. Several factors were recognized that led to a no-go decision at this phase: • Electrical needs for placing the stimulated well on production were not considered in the initial scoping. Costs of pipeline costs were also underestimated in the original cost share. Easements and rights-of-way to establish a geothermal pipeline underneath or across an interstate highway were also found to be intractable on the time scale of the project. • The plant is injection limited, and no design or cost estimate was in place to handle the additional production needed to realize a 5 Mwe benefit. A new injection well would need to be drilled in addition to the other facility improvements to bring in the stimulated well. Patau Acquisition Company attempted to locate additional wells of opportunity that could realize the SOPOs goals, but was unsuccessful. As a result, this project is being terminated at the end of Phase 1.

Large Scale Granulator Development Designed to Process Reclaimed Feedstock for Sustainable Additive Manufacturing Applications

This CRADA between UT-Battelle, LLC (Contractor) and re:3D Inc. (Participant) aims to develop an affordable large-scale granulator system designed to process reclaimed plastic feedstock suitable for additive manufacturing applications. The 24-month project will focus on testing, prototyping, and optimizing a shredder/granulator system. This project also focuses on the processing steps (e.g. washing and sorting) that can convert waste plastics, like discarded water bottles, into flake/granules which can be 3D printed using re:3D’s Fused Granular Fabrication (FGF) 3D printers. If successful, this could enable more localized 3D printing using recycled plastics, reducing waste and feedstock costs.

Review, Selection and Installation of a Rapid Prototype Machine

The objective of this paper is to impress upon the reader the benefits and advantages of investing in rapid prototyping (additive manufacturing) technology thru the procurement of one or two new rapid prototyping machines and the creation of a new Prototype and Model Lab at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). This new resource will be available to all of United Space Alliance, LLC (USA), enabling engineers from around the company to pursue a more effective means of communication and design with our co-workers, and our customer, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The Rapid Protoyping/3D printing industry mirrors the transition the CAD industry made several years ago, when companies were trying to justify the expenditure of converting to a 3D based system from a 2D based system. The advantages of using a 3D system seemed to be outweighed by the cost it would take to convert not only legacy 2D drawings into 3D models but the training of personnel to use the 3D CAD software. But the reality was that when a 3D CAD system is employed, it gives engineers a much greater ability to conceive new designs and the ability to engineer new tools and products much more effectively. Rapid Prototyping (RP) is the name given to a host of related technologies that are used to fabricate physical objects directly from Computer Aided Design (CAD) data sources. These methods are generally similar to each other in that they add and bond materials in a layer wise-fashion to form objects, instead of machining away material. The machines used in Rapid Prototyping are also sometimes referred to as Rapid Manufacturing machines due to the fact that some of the parts fabricated in a RP machine can be used as the finished product. The name "Rapid Prototyping" is really a misnomer. It is much more than prototypes and it is not always rapid.

Generation of Rare Earth Metals from Rare Earth Oxide Using Microwave Plasmas

The overarching goal of the proposed project is to develop a simple, energy-saving, high-selectivity technology for efficiently converting rare-earth oxides (REOs) to rare-earth metals (RE-metals) using microwave plasma under low temperature and inexpensive H 2 and N 2 . The project was managed and led by Dr. Maohong Fan at the University of Wyoming. The collaborating institutions include Ames Lab and Colorado School of Mines. The industrial collaboration entity is Eutectix, LLC. The use of hydrogen to reduce rare earth oxides has many advantages, as it is renewable and does not produce harmful emissions during metal production. Also, it avoids the use of carbon and the emission of CO 2 . Nd 2 O 3 treated with hydrogen plasma shows new peaks alongside those of Nd 2 O 3 . Some of these peaks are close to (28.4, 29.4, 30.5, 32.3, 36.6, 42.1, 48.9, 50.08, 55.1, 59.05, 59.64, 60.68, 62.5, 63.25), which may be related to elemental Nd.

HERO WEC Belt Test Data

The following submission includes raw and processed data from the 2024 Hydraulic and Electric Reverse Osmosis Wave Energy Converter (HERO WEC) belt tests conducted using NREL's Large Amplitude Motion Platform (LAMP). A description of the motion profiles run during testing can be found in the run log document. Data was collected using NREL's Modular Ocean Data AcQuisition (MODAQ) system in the form of TDMS files. Data was then processed using Python and MATLAB and converted to MATLAB workspace, parquet, and csv file formats. During Data processing, a low pass filter was applied to each array and the arrays were then resampled to common 10Hz timestamps. A MATLAB data viewer script is provided to quickly visualize these data sets. The following arrays are contained in each test data file: - Time: Unix seconds timestamp - Test_Time: Time in seconds since beginning of test - POS_OS_1001: Encoder position in degrees (the encoder is located on the secondary shaft of the spring return and is driven by the winch after a 4.5:1 gear reduction) - LC_ST_1001: Anchor load cell data in lbf - PRESS_OS_2002: Air spring pressure in psi This data set has been developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, operated by Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC, for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under Contract No. DE-AC36-08GO28308. Funding provided by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Water Power Technologies Office.

CRADA Number NFE-22-09315 with Captis Aire LLC (CRADA Final Report)

Our goal is to provide an economically and environmentally advantageous capture technology to clean the air at industrial manufacturing facilities, especially wood products manufacturing facilities. There are hundreds of wood products manufacturing sites at which this capture technology could be implemented and thousands more sites in the broader 104 industries subject to the clean air act. This work is critical because when implemented at just 50 wood products sites it could capture over 100 million pounds per year of pollutants (wastes) that could be converted into over 90 million pounds per year of valuable products rather than burning them as waste. These pollutants, primarily turpentine or terpenes, can be used to provide a wide variety of products including biofuels, flavors, fragrances, and more. Versus the baseline technology, the technology could reduce energy use including fossil fuels by more than 10 trillion BTUs per year and drive down operational costs for our customers by up to $150 million per year.

Develop a Simulation Framework for Understanding Physico-Chemical Processes and Optimization of CHZ' Plastic Thermolyze Technology (CRADA Final Report)

Thermolyzer(TM) technology is a third-generation, multi-reactor, oxygen-free, low pressure, slow pyrolysis process. It has proven to be remarkably versatile in successfully processing all types of hydrocarbon waste. These include all seven types of plastics, tires, auto shredder residue, carpet, electronic waste, and composites. Working with the IACMI, Thermolyzer(TM) technology has recovered the glass and carbon fibers from wind turbine blades for reuse into new applications. Its primary output is a synthesis gas that is rich in H 2 , CH 4 , and small amounts of C 2-4 aliphatic hydrocarbons. Other components are CO and CO 2 . Three unique features set Thermolyzer(TM) apart from other pyrolysis systems: the syngas is clean enough to run in Siemens or Solar gas turbines or IC engines without fouling, clean, salable, byproducts are produced, and CO 2 emissions are lower than natural gas power plants. Research results have been obtained from an operating 7 ton/day facility. A 44 ton/day plant has successfully operated as noted above. The process works because it makes use of the recoverable embodied energy in the feedstock. Surprisingly, a pound of some plastics has the same recoverable energy content as a pound of gasoline. Thus, it is imperative to develop a process that economically converts scrap plastics (including ocean plastics) into energy and thereby conserve the non-renewable fossil fuels for future generations. The Thermolyzer(TM) technology can also be used to create liquid fuels like gasoline and diesel from hydrocarbon wastes. Because of the high hydrogen content of the synthesis gas, hydrogen can be recovered more inexpensively than the current solar or wind energy being used to electrolyze water. That hydrogen can be used for fuel cell powered vehicles or converted into ammonia for agriculture or as a hydrogen storage medium. Extension of this technology to other wastes such as tires, auto shredder residue or wood wastes would expand the circular economy.
