Development of EXITE3, Imaging Detectors and a Long Duration Balloon Gondola

In this Report we summarize the work conducted for the EXITE program under grant NAG5-5103. This grant supported the ongoing EXITE program at Harvard for the development of imaging hard x-ray detectors and telescopes over the 3 year period 1997-2000 with a one year extension to 2001 to transition to the next SR&T grant in this program. Work was conducted in three major parts: analysis of the EXITE2 balloon flight data (from our May 1997 flight); development of pixellated imaging Cd-Zn-Te detector arrays and readout systems for the proposed EXITE3 detector and telescope; and development of systems for a Long Duration Balloon (LDB) gondola. Progress on all three major aspects of this research is summarized for each of the years of this grant.

Balloon-Borne Observations of the Polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background

This final report is confined to the sub-contract to Caltech, and does not cover work at the PI institution (PI John Ruhl, Case Western Reserve University). In our original proposal, we planned to fly BOOMERANG twice, in the 2000 / 2001 and 2002 / 2003 Austral LDB seasons. The first flight was to have used a newly developed detector technology: the Polarization Sensitive Bolometer (PSB). The second flight was to have used a yet more sophisticated technology: a polarization sensitive, antenna-coupled array (CAMWA). The development of both technologies proceeded more slowly than anticipated. In the end, we were successful in developing the PSB technology to maturity, integrating it into the payload, and flying the payload once during the 2002/2003 Austral season. The payload performed well during this flight, and analysis of the data is in progress. As originally proposed, we have also continued to work on analysis of the data from the 1998 flight, and several publications have resulted. Sufficient progress has been made on the CAMWA technology that we expect to be able to field it into an instrument in 2 to 3 years. However, ground-based telescopes now appear to be a more attractive platform for CMB polarimetry, owing to the longer integration times available. We thus anticipate first implementing CAMWA on a ground-based telescope at South Pole.

The Explorer of Diffuse Galactic Emission (EDGE): Determining the Large-Scale Structure Evolution in the Universe

Measurements of the large-scale anisotropy of the Cosmic Infared Background (CIB) can be used to determine the characteristics of the distribution of galaxies at the largest spatial scales. With this information important tests of galaxy evolution models and primordial structure growth are possible. In this paper, we describe the scientific goals, instrumentation, and operation of EDGE, a mission using an Antarctic Long Duration Balloon (LDB) platform. EDGE will osbserve the anisotropy in the CIB in 8 spectral bands from 270 GHz-1.5 THz with 6 arcminute angular resolution over a region -400 square degrees. EDGE uses a one-meter class off-axis telescope and an array of Frequency Selective Bololeters (FSB) to provide the compact and efficient multi-colar, high sensitivity radiometer required to achieve its scientific objectives.

The Energy Spectra of Proton and Helium Measured from the ATIC Experiment

The Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC) balloon experiment is designed to investigate the composition and energy spectra of cosmic rays at the highest energies currently accessible from direct measurements, the region up to 100 TeV. The instrument consists of a silicon matrix for charge measurement, a graphite target (0.75 nuclear interaction length) to induce hadronic fragmentation, 3 scintillator strip hodoscopes for triggering and helping reconstruct trajectory, and a BGO calorimeter (18 radiation lengths) to measure the energy of incident particles. ATIC had two successful Long Duration Balloon (LDB) flights from McMurdo, Antarctica: from 12/28/00 to 01/13/01 and from 12/29/02 to 01/18/03. We present the energy spectra of proton and helium extracted from the ATIC flights, over the energy range from 100 GeV to 100 TeV, and compare them with the results from other experiments at both the lower and higher energy ends.

Biaxial Stress Limit for ULDB Film

The current ULDB design applies stress to the shell film biaxially to control creep in the latitudinal direction. The recent change in design paradigm, from a uniaxial to biaxial stress state basis, arose from a new perspective that the biaxial loading can control strain in both principal surface dimensions as discussed below. The current ULDB project path was thus enabled by a more thorough understanding of the nonlinear viscoelastic properties of the shell film material, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). Although a very similar material is also used in NASA zero-pressure (ZPB) and long-duration balloons (LDB), the different stress state requires a new approach to shell material qualification.

Deep Space Test Bed

The DSTB Facility provides a new capability for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration s (NASA s) Space Radiation Shielding Project (SRSP). The objective of the DSTB is to provide a platform to conduct radiation shielding investigations in an environment more similar to deep space than most Low Earth orbits or is achievable at a particle accelerator. The DSTB provides a means to experimentally test radiation shielding effectiveness of various materials and to test the accuracy of radiation transport code predictions in the deep space cosmic ray environment more frequently and at a lower cost compared to space flight missions. New spectrometers, dosimeters and other techniques may be exercised and verified using the DSTB before space flight. The DSTB will be implemented through NASA s National Scientific Balloon Facility (NSBF) which provides polar balloon flights that lift science payloads to high altitude (120,000 A. (36.58km)) to escape much of the shielding effects of the Earth s atmosphere and magnetosphere. Polar flights are conducted through NSBF in coordination with the United States Polar Program. The DSTB will be launched on a Long Duration Balloon (LDB) from McMurdo, Antarctica (77.86 degrees south latitude) for circumpolar flights, nominally 20 days, traveling to the west and typically bounded between 73 to 82 degrees south latitude. Float altitudes for these balloons with payload are 115,000 to 130,000 feet (35.05 to 39.62km). The DSTB will be able to accommodate up to 20 investigations per flight. Annual flight opportunities are planned starting in December 2005. Balloon campaigns in Antarctica occur in December and January during the Austral summer. Since a key goal of the DSTB facility is to efficiently serve the varied needs of the radiation shielding community; it must be designed with a flexible architecture. By implementing the DSTB facility with NASA s balloon program, which operates under reduced formalities compared to space flight, the DSTB facility can adjust for different investigation priorities on successive flights. This flexibility in the DSTB will be applied at several levels; in the distribution of the shared resources for each flight; addressing the payload configuration on a system level for each flight; and utilizing a selection process for investigations that considers yearly flight opportunities as well as the possibility for repeated flights. This approach for operating the DSTB facility will allow it to handle a wide range of investigations.

The Electron Calorimeter (ECAL) Long Duration Balloon Experiment

Accurate measurements of the cosmic ray electron energy spectrum in the energy region 50 GeV to greater than 1 TeV may reveal structure caused by the annihilation of exotic dark matter particles and/or individual cosmic ray sources. Here we describe a new long duration balloon (LDB) experiment, ECAL, optimized to directly measure cosmic ray electrons up to several TeV. ECAL includes a double layer silicon matrix, a scintillating optical fiber track imager, a neutron detector and a fully active calorimeter to identify more than 90% of the incident electrons with an energy resolution of about 1.7% while misidentifying only 1 in 200,000 protons and 0.8% of secondary gamma rays as electrons. Two ECAL flights in Antarctica are planned for a total exposure of 50 days with the first flight anticipate for December 2009.

All-Particle Spectrum Measured by the ATIC Experiment

The Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC), a balloon-borne experiment, is designed to investigate the composition and energy spectra of cosmic rays of charge Z = 1 to 26 over the energy range - 10(exp 11) - 10(exp 14) ev. The instrument consists of a silicon matrix charge detector, plastic-scintillator strip hodoscopes interleaved with graphite interaction targets, and an 18 radiation length deep, fully active bismuth germanate (BGO) calorimeter. ATIC has had two successful long duration balloon (LDB) flights launched from McMurdo Station, Antarc't'ica in 2000 and 2002. In this paper, we present the all-particle spectrum extracted from data collected during the ATIC flights, and compare it with results from other experiments at both lower and higher energies.

SuperHERO: The Next Generation Hard X-ray HEROES Telescope

SuperHERO is a new high-sensitivity Long Duration Balloon (LDB)-capable, hard-x-ray (20-75 keV) telescope for making novel astrophysics and heliophysics observations. The proposed SuperHERO payload will be developed jointly by the Astrophysics Office at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, the Solar Physics Laboratory and Wallops Flight Facility at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. SuperHERO is a follow-on payload to the High Energy Replicated Optics to Explore the Sun (HEROES) balloon-borne telescope that recently launched from Fort Sumner, NM in September of 2013. The HEROES core instrument is a hard x-ray telescope consisting of x-ray 109 optics configured into 8 modules. Each module is aligned to a matching gas-filled detector at a focal length of 6 m. SuperHERO will make significant improvements to the HEROES payload, including: new solid-state multi-pixel CdTe detectors, additional optics, the Wallops Arc-Second Pointer, alignment monitoring systems and lighter gondola.

Power Systems Design for Long Duration Ballooning

The Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility has been designing and building high-altitude balloon power systems for over 26 years. With that experience, we have found certain types of PV panels, batteries, and charge controllers that are reliable in stratospheric environments. The ultimate goal is to ensure that power systems will provide power reliably throughout the duration of an LDB flight. The purpose of this presentation is to provide some general guidelines and best practices for power system design.

The Exoplanet Climate Infrared TElescope (EXCITE)

Although there are a large number of known exoplanets, there is little data on their global atmospheric properties.Phase-resolved spectroscopy of transiting planets - continuous spectroscopic observation of planets during their full orbits - probes varied depths and longitudes in the atmospheres thus measuring their three-dimensional thermal and chemical structure and contributing to our understanding of their global circulation. Planets with characteristics suitable for atmospheric characterization have orbits of several days, so phase curve observations are highly resource intensive, especially for shared use facilities. The Exoplanet Climate Infrared TElescope (EXCITE) is a balloon-borne near-infrared spectrometer designed to observe from 1 to 5 meters to perform phase-resolved spectroscopy of hot Jupiters. Flying from a long duration balloon (LDB) platform, EXCITE will have the stability to continuously stare at targets for days at a time and the sensitivity to produce data of the quality and quantity needed to signicantly advance our understanding of exoplanet atmospheres. We describe the EXCITE design and show results of analytic and numerical calculations of the instrument sensitivity. We show that an instrument like EXCITE will produce a wealth of quality data, both complementing and serving as a critical bridge between current and future space-based near infrared spectroscopic instruments.

Power Systems Design for Long Duration Ballooning
