Characterization of the new Ultracold Neutron beamline at the LANL UCN facility

The neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment that is currently being developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) will use ultracold neutrons (UCN) and Ramsey’s method of separated oscillatory fields to search for a nEDM. Here, in this paper, we present measurements of UCN storage and UCN transport performed during the commissioning of a new beamline at the LANL UCN source and demonstrate a sufficient number of stored polarized UCN to achieve a statistical uncertainty of δd n = 2 x 10 -27 e cm in 5 calendar years of running. We also present an analytical model describing data that provides a simple parameterization of the input UCN energy spectrum on the new beamline.

GIS @ LANL

Why is GIS important to LANL, how is it being used, and what can the GIS Program do for you? The GIS Program is an institutional resource for all things related to GIS/spatial data/mapping. We have a robust Enterprise GIS platform with over 25 years worth of LANL operational spatial data. We are constantly making ties to additional tabular data sources to integrate information so that it can be leveraged through interactive mapping applications.

LANL’s Digital Supply Chain Transformation with Ariba Part 2 [Slides]

LANL’s budget continues to increase. Our annual procurement spend has increased from approximately 750 million two years ago to 1.4 Billion in FY21. Procurement for LANL is a mix of indirect and direct but had limited managed spend – more standalone orders vs master contracts. The level of transformation we were looking to achieve required a comprehensive approach, encompassing people, processes and software solutions.

The Analysis and Support for LANL Technology Testbed: High Altitude Balloon Gondola and Orion Eagle Gamma Ray Detection Instrument

The Analysis and Support for LANL Technology Testbed: High Altitude Balloon Gondola and Orion Eagle Gamma-Ray Detection Instrument is a project where Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), in conjunction with the University of Michigan, are looking into gamma-ray detection in a space-like environment. The purpose of the detection is to work on instruments that can assist with planetary exploration and nuclear deterrents using a High-Altitude Balloon (HAB). For this paper, the main focus is on the mechanical aspects related to the structural analysis of the gondola. It is vital to understand the structural analysis because it helps determine if the gondola can survive the changes in the environment and the different forces or shocks that it will experience when the parachute is deployed and at landing. Additionally, NASA's Balloon Program Office (BPO) has specific requirements to meet to achieve flight certifications. Part of those certifications requires the gondola to simulate different scenarios at specific conditions with various forces applied and orientations. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the calculations of each method and the force applied to get the right results. Once that is done, the information is inputted into the structural analysis modeling system. The system will aid the mechanical team in assessing the conditions of the gondola at each scenario and determine its margin of safety. After the gondola and instrument are certified, the payload will be able to fly. The HAB and payload are launched from NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) at Fort Sumner, NM. The official flight was on September 26th, 2021.

NGEE Arctic LANL Overview [Slides]

The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments (NGEE Arctic) project has a goal to "deliver a process-rich ecosystem model, extending from bedrock to the top of the vegetative canopy/atmospheric interface, in which the evolution of Arctic ecosystems in a changing climate can be modeled at the scale of a high resolution Earth System Model (ESM) grid cell." LANL works across multiple NGEE Arctic science questions, such as: Q1. How does the structure and organization of the landscape control permafrost evolution and associated carbon and nutrient fluxes in a changing climate? Q5. Where, when, and why will the Arctic become wetter or drier, and what are the implications for climate forcing? and Q6. What controls the vulnerability of Arctic ecosystems to disturbance, and how do disturbances alter the structure and function of these ecosystems? This report features LANL's research summaries.
