Ultrafast renormalization of the magnetic continuum in the proximal Kitaev quantum spin liquid H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 by tr-RIXS [Invited]

We present the first circularly polarized non-resonant pump time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (tr-RIXS) experiment in H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 , an iridium-based Kitaev system. Our calculations and experimental results are consistent with the modification of the low-energy magnetic excitations in H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 only during illumination by the laser pulse. We discuss these results in a cooperative framework between the Floquet engineering of the exchange interactions and the dynamic renormalization of electron-electron correlations. However, the penetration length mismatch between the X-ray probe and laser pump and the intrinsic complexity of Kitaev magnets prevents us from unequivocally extracting towards which ground state H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 is driven. We outline possible solutions to these challenges for light-driven stabilization and observation of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid limit by RIXS.

High-temperature magnetic anomaly in the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb compound β - Li 2 IrO 3

Here, we report the existence of a high-temperature magnetic anomaly in the three-dimensional Kitaev candidate material, β - Li 2 IrO 3 . Signatures of the anomaly appear in magnetization, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation measurements. The onset coincides with a reordering of the principal axes of magnetization, which is thought to be connected to the onset of Kitaev-like correlations in the system. The anomaly also shows magnetic hysteresis with a spatially anisotropic magnitude that follows the spin-anisotropic exchange anisotropy of the underlying Kitaev Hamiltonian. We discuss possible scenarios for a bulk and impurity origin.

Kitaev physics in the two-dimensional magnet NiPSe 3

The Kitaev interaction, found in candidate materials such as α − RuCl 3 , occurs through the metal ( M )-ligand ( X )-metal ( M ) paths of the edge-sharing octahedra because the large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the metal atoms activates directional spin interactions. Here, we show that even in 3 d transition-metal compounds, where the SOC of the metal atom is negligible, heavy ligands can induce bond-dependent Kitaev interactions. In this work, we take as an example the 3 d transition-metal chalcogenophosphate NiPSe 3 and show that the key is found in the presence of a sizable SOC on the Se p orbital, one which mediates the super-exchange between the nearest-neighbor Ni sites. Our study provides a pathway for engineering enhanced Kitaev interactions through the interplay of SOC strength, lattice distortions, and chemical substitutions. Robustness of Vacancy-Bound Non-Abelian Anyons in the Kitaev Model in a Magnetic Field

Non-Abelian anyons in quantum spin liquids (QSLs) provide a promising route to fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. In the exactly solvable Kitaev honeycomb model, such anyons of the QSL state can be bound to nonmagnetic spin vacancies and endowed with non-Abelian statistics by an infinitesimal magnetic field. Here, we investigate how this approach for stabilizing non-Abelian anyons extends to a finite magnetic field represented by a proper Zeeman term. Through large-scale density-matrix renormalization group simulations, we compute the vacancy-anyon binding energy as a function of magnetic field for both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev models. Here, we find that anyon binding remains robust within the entire QSL phase for the ferromagnetic Kitaev model but breaks down already inside this phase for the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model. To compute a binding energy several orders of magnitude below the magnetic energy scale, we introduce both a refined definition and an extrapolation scheme based on carefully tailored perturbations.

Theory of the Kitaev model in a [111] magnetic field

Recent numerical studies indicate that the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb lattice model undergoes a magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transition into a new spin-liquid phase. This intermediate-field phase has been previously characterized as a gapless spin liquid. By implementing a recently developed variational approach based on the exact fractionalized excitations of the zero-field model, we demonstrate that the field-induced spin liquid is gapped and belongs to Kitaev’s 16-fold way. Specifically, the low-field non-Abelian liquid with Chern number C = ±1 transitions into an Abelian liquid with C = ±4. The critical field and the field-dependent behaviors of key physical quantities are in good quantitative agreement with published numerical results. Furthermore, we derive an effective field theory for the field-induced critical point which readily explains the ostensibly gapless nature of the intermediate-field spin liquid.

Continuum of magnetic excitations in the Kitaev honeycomb iridate D 3 LiIr 2 O 6

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements of powder D 3 ( 7 Li)( 193 Ir) 2 O 6 reveal low energy magnetic excitations with a scattering cross-section that is broad in ∣Q∣ and energy transfer. The magnetic nature of the excitation spectrum is demonstrated by longitudinally polarized neutron scattering. The total magnetic moment of 1.8(4)μ B /Ir inferred from the observed magnetic scattering cross-section is consistent with the effective moment inferred from magnetic susceptibility data and expectations for the J eff = 1/2 single ion state. The rise in the dynamic correlation function $\mathcal{S}(Q,w)$ for ℏω < 5 meV can be described by a simple model assuming nearest-neighbor anisotropic spin exchange, such as that found in the Kitaev model. Exchange disorder associated with the D site likely plays an important role in stabilizing the low T quantum fluctuating state.

Static and dynamical magnetic properties of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model with spin vacancies

Motivated by the potential to suppress antiferromagnetic long-range order in favor of the long-sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid state, we study the effect of spin vacancies in the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model. In particular, we focus on a realistic model obtained from fitting inelastic neutron scattering on α–RuCl 3 . We observe that the long-range zigzag magnetic ordered state only survives when the doping concentration is smaller than 5%. Upon further increasing the spin vacancy concentration, the ground state becomes a short-range ordered state at low temperatures. Compared with experiments, our classical solution overstabilizes the zigzag correlation in the presence of spin vacancies. Here, our theoretical results provide guidance toward interpreting inelastic neutron scattering experiments on magnetically diluted Kitaev candidate materials

Electronic and magnetic phase diagrams of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

The 3⁢d 7 Co 2+ -based insulating magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 has recently been reported to have strong Kitaev interactions on a honeycomb lattice and is thus being considered as a Kitaev quandum spin liquid candidate. However, due to the existence of other types of interactions, a spontaneous long-range magnetic order occurs. This order is suppressed by applied magnetic fields leading to a succession of phases and ultimately saturation of the magnetic moments. The precise phase diagram, the nature of the phases, and the possibility that one of the field-induced phases is a Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase are still a matter of debate. Here, in this study, we measured an extensive set of physical properties to build the complete temperature-field phase diagrams to magnetic saturation at 10 T for magnetic fields along the a and a* axes, and a partial phase diagram up to 60 T along c. We probe the phases using magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and electric polarization, which is a symmetry-sensitive probe. With these measurements, we identify all the previously incomplete phase boundaries and find additional high-field phase boundaries. We find strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dielectric constant and moderate magnetostrictive coupling at several phase boundaries. Furthermore, we detect the symmetry of the magnetic order using electrical polarization measurements under magnetic fields. Based on our analysis, the absence of electric polarization under zero or finite magnetic field in any of the phases or after any combination of magnetic/electric field cooling suggests that a zigzag spin structure is more likely than a triple-Q spin structure at zero field. Finally, we investigate the hysteresis and first- or second-order nature of each phase transition and its entropy changes. With this information, we establish a map of the magnetic phases of this compound and its magnetic, thermodynamic, and magnetoelectric properties, and discuss where spin liquid or other phases may be sought in future studies.

Topological order in Mott insulators

Here in this commemorative issue for Phil Anderson, I reproduce parts of a joint unpublished paper that first got me thinking about topological order in Mott insulators. With Phil, we explored aspects of the momentum distribution function and the non-classical rotational inertia in the Bose Hubbard model close to the quantum phase transition. My interest on this question continued, and later in the article I take up the question of topological order in the Kitaev Mott insulator on the honeycomb lattice with bond-dependent interactions in a finite magnetic field. Kitaev obtained the exact solution for zero field that demonstrated an exotic Z 2 quantum spin liquid phase with topological order. In a finite magnetic field, we discovered a new intermediate U(1) gapless quantum spin liquid phase, sandwiched between the known gapped Kitaev spin liquid and a polarized phase, that harbors fractionalized neutral fermionic excitations, dubbed spinons, that remarkably form a Fermi surface in a Mott insulator.

Magnetic states of graphene proximitized Kitaev materials

Single-layer α-ruthenium trichloride (α–RuCl 3 ) has been proposed as a potential quantum spin liquid. Graphene/RuCl 3 heterobilayers have been extensively studied with a focus on the large interlayer electron transfer that dopes both materials. Here we examine the interplay between the competing magnetic state of RuCl 3 layer and graphene electronic properties. We perform self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations on a Hubbard-Kanamori model of the 4d 5 t 2g electrons of α–RuCl 3 and confirm that out-of-plane ferromagnetic and zigzag antiferromagnetic states are energetically competitive. We show that the influence of hybridization between graphene and RuCl 3 bands is strongly sensitive to the magnetic configuration of RuCl 3 and the relative orientations of the two layers. We argue that strong hybridization leads to graphene magnetoresistance and that it may tilt the balance between closely competing magnetic states. Furthermore, Our analysis can be applied to any van der Waals heterobilayer system with weak interlayer hybridization and allows for arbitrary lattice constant mismatch and relative orientation.

Instabilities of heavy magnons in an anisotropic magnet

Abstract The search for new elementary particles is one of the most basic pursuits in physics, spanning from subatomic physics to quantum materials. Magnons are the ubiquitous elementary quasiparticle to describe the excitations of fully-ordered magnetic systems. But other possibilities exist, including fractional and multipolar excitations. Here, we demonstrate that strong quantum interactions exist between three flavors of elementary quasiparticles in the uniaxial spin-one magnet FeI 2 . Using neutron scattering in an applied magnetic field, we observe spontaneous decay between conventional and heavy magnons and the recombination of these quasiparticles into a super-heavy bound-state. Akin to other contemporary problems in quantum materials, the microscopic origin for unusual physics in FeI 2 is the quasi-flat nature of excitation bands and the presence of Kitaev anisotropic magnetic exchange interactions.

Magnetoelastic effects in the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev spin liquid

In recent years, several magnetic Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling were suggested to be proximate to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, whose one of the most exciting features is the fractionalization of spin excitations into itinerant Majorana fermions and static Z 2 fluxes. Unfortunately, the ground states of these systems cannot be easily captured by experiment, remaining featureless to conventional local probes. Here, we propose to study the signatures of fractionalized excitations by exploiting their coupling to the lattice vibrations, dubbed magnetoelastic coupling, which arises from the fact that the interaction between spins depends on the relative distance between them. We argue that the magnetoelastic coupling can lead to the distinct modification of the phonon dynamics, which can be observed by measuring renormalized phonon spectrum, the sound attenuation, and the phonon Hall viscosity. This makes the phonon dynamics a promising tool for the characterization and identification of quantum spin liquid phases. In this work, we focus on the magnetoelastic effects in the three-dimensional Kitaev model realized on the hyperhoneycomb lattice. Here, the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev spin liquid is particularly interesting since the strong Kitaev interaction was observed in the Kitaev magnet β-Li 2 IrO 3 , for which the spin-orbit entangled J eff = 1/2 moments of iridium ions form precisely the hyperhoneycomb lattice.

Magnetic field effects on the quantum spin liquid behaviors of NaYbS 2

Spin-orbit coupling is an important ingredient to regulate the many-body physics, especially for many spin liquid candidate materials such as rare-earth magnets and Kitaev materials. The rare-earth chalcogenides NaYbCh 2 (Ch = O, S, Se) is a congenital frustrating system to exhibit the intrinsic landmark of spin liquid by eliminating both the site disorders between Na + and Yb 3+ ions with the big ionic size difference and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with the perfect triangular lattice of the Yb 3+ ions. The temperature versus magnetic-field phase diagram is established by the magnetization, specific heat, and neutron-scattering measurements. Notably, the neutron diffraction spectra and the magnetization curve might provide microscopic evidence for a series of spin configuration for in-plane fields, which include the disordered spin liquid state, 120° antiferromagnet, and one-half magnetization state. Furthermore, the ground state is suggested to be a gapless spin liquid from inelastic neutron scattering, and the magnetic field adjusts the spin orbit coupling. Therefore, the strong spin-orbit coupling in the frustrated quantum magnet substantially enriches low-energy spin physics. This rare-earth family could offer a good platform for exploring the quantum spin liquid ground state and quantum magnetic transitions.

Topological and magnetic phase transitions in the bilayer Kitaev-Ising model

We investigate the phase diagram of a bilayer Kitaev honeycomb model with Ising interlayer interactions, deriving effective models via perturbation theory and performing Majorana mean-field theory calculations. We show that a diverse array of magnetic and topological phase transitions occur, depending on the direction of the interlayer Ising interaction and the relative sign of Kitaev interactions. When two layers have the same sign of the Kitaev interaction, a first-order transition from a Kitaev spin liquid to a magnetically ordered state takes place. The magnetic order points along the Ising axis and it is (anti)ferromagnetic for (anti)ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions. However, when two layers have opposite signs of the Kitaev interaction, we observe a notable weakening of magnetic ordering tendencies and the Kitaev spin liquid survives up to a remarkably larger interlayer exchange. Our mean-field analysis suggests the emergence of an intermediate gapped ℤ 2 spin-liquid state, which eventually becomes unstable upon vison condensation. The confined phase is described by a highly frustrated 120° compass model. We furthermore use perturbation theory to study the model with the Ising axis pointing along the $\hat{z}$ axis or lying in the 𝑥⁢𝑦 plane. In both cases, our analysis reveals the formation of one-dimensional Ising chains, which remain decoupled in perturbation theory, resulting in a subextensive ground-state degeneracy. Our results highlight the interplay between topological order and magnetic ordering tendencies in bilayer quantum spin liquids.

Static magnetic order with strong quantum fluctuations in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

Kitaev interactions, arising from the interplay of frustration and bond anisotropy, can lead to strong quantum fluctuations and, in an ideal case, to a quantum-spin-liquid state. However, in many nonideal materials, spurious non-Kitaev interactions typically promote a zigzag antiferromagnetic order in the d-orbital transition-metal compounds. Here, by combining neutron scattering with muon-spin rotation and relaxation techniques, we provide mechanism insights into the exotic properties of Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , a candidate material of the Kitaev model. Below T N , the zero-field muon-spin relaxation rate becomes almost constant (~0.45 μs –1 ). We attribute this temperature-independent relaxation rate to the strong quantum fluctuations, as well as to the frustrated Kitaev interactions. As the magnetic field increases, neutron scattering data indicate a broader spin-wave excitation at the K-point. Therefore, quantum fluctuations seem not only robust but are even enhanced by the applied magnetic field. Our findings provide valuable hints for understanding the onset of the quantum-spin-liquid state in Kitaev materials.

Giant Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Few-Layer α-RuCl 3 Tunnel Junctions

The spin–orbit-assisted Mott insulator α-RuCl 3 is proximate to the coveted quantum spin liquid (QSL) predicted by the Kitaev model. In the search for the pure Kitaev QSL, reducing the dimensionality of this frustrated magnet by exfoliation has been proposed as a way to enhance magnetic fluctuations and Kitaev interactions. Here, in this work, we perform angle-dependent tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) measurements on ultrathin α-RuCl 3 crystals with various layer numbers to probe their magnetic, electronic, and crystal structures. We observe a giant change in resistance, as large as ~2500%, when the magnetic field rotates either within or out of the α-RuCl 3 plane, a manifestation of the strongly anisotropic spin interactions in this material. In combination with scanning transmission electron microscopy, this tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) reveals that few-layer α-RuCl 3 crystals remain in the high-temperature monoclinic phase at low temperatures. It also shows the presence of a zigzag antiferromagnetic order below the critical temperature T N ≃ 14 K, which is twice the one typically observed in bulk samples with rhombohedral stacking. Our work offers valuable insights into the relation between the stacking order and magnetic properties of this material, which helps lay the groundwork for creating and electrically probing exotic magnetic phases such as QSLs via van der Waals engineering.

Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity Oscillations in Relation to the Putative Kitaev Spin Liquid Phase of α-RuCl 3

In the presence of an external magnetic field, the Kitaev model could host either gapped topological anyons or gapless Majorana fermions. In α-RuCl 3 , the gapped and gapless cases are only separated by a 30° rotation of the in-plane magnetic field vector. The presence or absence of the spectral gap is key for understanding the thermal transport behavior in α-RuCl 3 . Here, we study the anisotropy of the oscillatory features of thermal conductivity in α-RuCl 3 . We examine the oscillatory features of thermal conductivities (κ / / a, κ / / b) with fixed external fields and find distinct behavior for the gapped (B / / a) and gapless (B / / b) scenarios. Furthermore, we track the evolution of thermal resistivity (λ α ) and its oscillatory features with the rotation of in-plane magnetic fields from B / / b to B / / a. The thermal resistivity λ(B, φ) displays distinct rotational symmetries before and after the emergence of the field-induced Kitaev spin liquid phase. These results suggest that oscillatory features of thermal conductivity in α-RuCl 3 are closely linked to the putative Kitaev spin liquid phase and its excitations.
