Systems Integration Challenges for a National Space Launch System

System Integration was refined through the complexity and early failures experienced in rocket flight. System Integration encompasses many different viewpoints of the system development. System Integration must ensure consistency in development and operations activities. Human Space Flight tends toward large, complex systems. Understanding the system fs operational and use context is the guiding principle for System Integration: (1) Sizeable costs can be driven into systems by not fully understanding context (2). Adhering to the system context throughout the system fs life cycle is essential to maintaining efficient System Integration. System Integration exists within the System Architecture. Beautiful systems are simple in use and operation -- Block upgrades facilitate manageable steps in functionality evolution. Effective System Integration requires a stable system concept. Communication is essential to system simplicity

Desert-Urban SysTem IntegratEd AtmospherIc Monsoon (DUSTIEAIM) in the Southwestern United States

Phoenix, Arizona, is the fifth-largest city in the United States with about 1.6 million residents. It is also considered to be the hottest major city in the country, having set a record of 31 consecutive days with temperatures above 110 F (43 C) in summer 2023. Phoenix depends on the Colorado River for over a third of its water supply, but there are questions about how much water will eventually be available to serve the rapidly growing metropolitan area, especially in such extreme heat. Current earth system models struggle to accurately capture precipitation in the Southwestern United States, especially in relation to the summertime North American Monsoon.

Peak cooling load shift capability of a thermal energy storage system integrated with an active insulation system in US climate zones

This study aims to evaluate a thermal energy storage (TES) system integrated with an active insulation system (AIS) to form a TES + AIS integrated wall system as a partition and as a secondary cooling system to shift the peak load and reduce cooling energy consumption. To understand and demonstrate its cooling performance, the TES + AIS integrated wall system was installed in an office building in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. To investigate the effect of the TES + AIS integrated wall system in a typical office building and various climate zones, the US Department of Energy’s prototype office building model was modified to accommodate the proposed system. In this work, results showed that the minimum size of the proposed system to achieve energy savings varies depending on climate conditions. The minimum size of the proposed system for cooling energy saving and shifting peak cooling demand in climate zones 2, 3, and 5 is 29.7 m 2 , whereas it is 44.6 m 2 in zones 4 and 6. By installing the minimum size of the proposed system, 11.3 % to 16.4 % of cooling energy can be shifted during discharge hours in a representative summer day.

Inozemtsev system as Seiberg-Witten integrable system

In this work we establish that the Inozemtsev system is the Seiberg-Witten integrable system encoding the Coulomb branch physics of 4d \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 USp(2 N ) gauge theory with four fundamental and (for N ≥ 2) one antisymmetric tensor hypermultiplets. We describe the transformation from the spectral curves and canonical one-forms of the Inozemtsev system in the N = 1 and N = 2 cases to the Seiberg-Witten curves and differentials explicitly, along with the explicit matching of the modulus of the elliptic curve of spectral parameters to the gauge coupling of the field theory, and of the couplings of the Inozemtsev system to the field theory mass parameters. This result is a particular instance of a more general correspondence between crystallographic elliptic Calogero-Moser systems with Seiberg-Witten integrable systems, which will be explored in future work.

IOTA Run 2 Beam Dynamics Studies in Nonlinear Integrable Systems

Nonlinear integrable optics is a promising design approach for suppressing fast collective instabilities. To study it experimentally, a new storage ring, the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA), was built at Fermilab. IOTA has recently completed its second scientific run, incorporating many hardware and instrumentation improvements. This report presents the results of the two integrable optics experiments - the quasi-integrable Henon-Heiles octupole system and the fully integrable Danilov-Nagaitsev system. We demonstrate tune spread and dynamic aperture in agreement with tracking simulations, and a stable crossing of the integer resonance. Based on recovered single-particle phase space dynamics, we show improved invariant jitter consistent with intended effective Hamiltonian. We conclude by outlining future plans and efforts towards proton studies and larger designs.

Rocket Testing and Integrated System Health Management

Integrated System Health Management (ISHM) describes a set of system capabilities that in aggregate perform: determination of condition for each system element, detection of anomalies, diagnosis of causes for anomalies, and prognostics for future anomalies and system behavior. The ISHM should also provide operators with situational awareness of the system by integrating contextual and timely data, information, and knowledge (DIaK) as needed. ISHM capabilities can be implemented using a variety of technologies and tools. This chapter provides an overview of ISHM contributing technologies and describes in further detail a novel implementation architecture along with associated taxonomy, ontology, and standards. The operational ISHM testbed is based on a subsystem of a rocket engine test stand. Such test stands contain many elements that are common to manufacturing systems, and thereby serve to illustrate the potential benefits and methodologies of the ISHM approach for intelligent manufacturing.

Dialogue Between Lighting and HVAC Systems: Improving building system integration

Lighting systems have long been capable of sensing when someone enters or exits a room and using that knowledge to turn lights on or off. More recently, connected lighting systems with sensors integrated into every luminaire have become broadly available, facilitating highly granular occupancy detection. Similarly, HVAC systems have long been able to use an understanding of building occupancy to adjust temperature setpoints and reduce energy use without significant impacts to occupant comfort. Energy codes (e.g., ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1, IECC, Title 24) now require “occupied standby HVAC control,” whereby systems adjust both temperature and ventilation setpoints in zones that are determined to be unoccupied during normal occupancy hours. Here, this article discusses current issues that stymie the integration of Lighting and HVAC systems, and DOE activities focused on addressing them.

Active Learning for Metamaterial Optimization on HPC and QC Integrated Systems

Active learning algorithms, integrating machine learning, quantum computing and optics simulation in an iterative loop, offer a promising approach to optimizing metamaterials. However, these algorithms can face difficulties in optimizing highly complex structures due to computational limitations. High-performance computing (HPC) and quantum computing (QC) integrated systems can address these issues by enabling parallel computing. In this study, we develop an active learning algorithm working on HPC-QC integrated systems. We evaluate the performance of optimization processes within active learning (i.e., training a machine learning model, problem-solving with quantum computing, and evaluating optical properties through wave-optics simulation) for highly complex metamaterial cases. Our results showcase that utilizing multiple cores on the integrated system can significantly reduce computational time, thereby enhancing the efficiency of optimization processes. Therefore, we expect that leveraging HPC-QC integrated systems helps effectively tackle large-scale optimization challenges in general.

Intelligent systems technology infrastructure for integrated systems

Significant advances have occurred during the last decade in intelligent systems technologies (a.k.a. knowledge-based systems, KBS) including research, feasibility demonstrations, and technology implementations in operational environments. Evaluation and simulation data obtained to date in real-time operational environments suggest that cost-effective utilization of intelligent systems technologies can be realized for Automated Rendezvous and Capture applications. The successful implementation of these technologies involve a complex system infrastructure integrating the requirements of transportation, vehicle checkout and health management, and communication systems without compromise to systems reliability and performance. The resources that must be invoked to accomplish these tasks include remote ground operations and control, built-in system fault management and control, and intelligent robotics. To ensure long-term evolution and integration of new validated technologies over the lifetime of the vehicle, system interfaces must also be addressed and integrated into the overall system interface requirements. An approach for defining and evaluating the system infrastructures including the testbed currently being used to support the on-going evaluations for the evolutionary Space Station Freedom Data Management System is presented and discussed. Intelligent system technologies discussed include artificial intelligence (real-time replanning and scheduling), high performance computational elements (parallel processors, photonic processors, and neural networks), real-time fault management and control, and system software development tools for rapid prototyping capabilities.

Definition, analysis and development of an optical data distribution network for integrated avionics and control systems. Part 2: Component development and system integration

Fiber optic transmission is emerging as an attractive concept in data distribution onboard civil aircraft. Development of an Optical Data Distribution Network for Integrated Avionics and Control Systems for commercial aircraft will provide a data distribution network that gives freedom from EMI-RFI and ground loop problems, eliminates crosstalk and short circuits, provides protection and immunity from lightning induced transients and give a large bandwidth data transmission capability. In addition there is a potential for significantly reducing the weight and increasing the reliability over conventional data distribution networks. Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a candidate method for data communication between the various avionic subsystems. With WDM all systems could conceptually communicate with each other without time sharing and requiring complicated coding schemes for each computer and subsystem to recognize a message. However, the state of the art of optical technology limits the application of fiber optics in advanced integrated avionics and control systems. Therefore, it is necessary to address the architecture for a fiber optics data distribution system for integrated avionics and control systems as well as develop prototype components and systems.

Preliminary Design of Nuclear Reactor Heat Delivery Systems: Integration with Reference Oil Refinery, Methanol Synthesis, and Hydrogen Production

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Integrated Energy Systems (IES) program is generating comprehensive analyses validating the opportunity for using nuclear energy in a variety of applications including future clean grids, providing heat for direct use, and providing heat to help reduce emissions in chemical commodities. This work focuses on the preliminary designs of thermal delivery systems that can integrate heat produced from a nuclear core to industrial processes. The key research question that needs to be answered is: what is the prospective method for integrating nuclear generated heat energy into non-electric applications that can facilitate combined heat and power operations by advanced nuclear reactor systems? This research is a composition of case studies showing preliminary conceptual designs for thermal delivery systems integrating advanced nuclear systems with a few industrial systems including high temperature steam electrolysis, a reference oil refinery, and potential future methanol systems that supplant some natural gas use with nuclear energy. Piping and instrumentation diagrams have been developed to show the conceptual integration of nuclear systems with representative industrial systems. Different features of the configurations are dependent on the specific integration requirements including energy source conditions, demand quantity, and require energy application conditions. Design concepts are validated using thermodynamic balance calculations to verify system performance including calculating system losses during transport. Key components: pumps and compressors, heat exchangers, and network piping are reported with key design information and sizing.
