Measurement of ω meson production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The p T -differential cross section of ω meson production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) was measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, covering an unprecedented transverse-momentum range of 1.6 < p T < 50 GeV/c. The meson is reconstructed via the ω → π + π − π 0 decay channel. The results are compared with various theoretical calculations: PYTHIA8.2 with the Monash 2013 tune overestimates the data by up to 50%, whereas good agreement is observed with Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculations incorporating ω fragmentation using a broken SU(3) model. The ω/π 0 ratio is presented and compared with theoretical calculations and the available measurements at lower collision energies. The presented data triples the p T ranges of previously available measurements. A constant ratio of C ω/π0 = 0.578 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.013 (syst.) is found above a transverse momentum of 4 GeV/c, which is in agreement with previous findings at lower collision energies within the systematic and statistical uncertainties.

Measurement of the inclusive isolated-photon production cross section in pp and Pb–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{\textit{s}_{NN }} = 5.02}$ TeV

The ALICE Collaboration at the CERN LHC has measured the inclusive production cross section of isolated photons at midrapidity as a function of the photon transverse momentum (p$^{γ}_{T}$), in Pb–Pb collisions in different centrality intervals, and in pp collisions, at centre-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The photon transverse momentum range is between 10–14 and 40–140 GeV/c, depending on the collision system and on the Pb–Pb centrality class. The result extends to lower p$^{γ}_{T}$ than previously published results by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the same collision energy. The covered pseudorapidity range is |η γ | < 0.67. The isolation selection is based on a charged particle isolation momentum threshold p$^{iso, ch}_{T}$ GeV/c within a cone of radii R = 0.2 and 0.4. The nuclear modification factor is calculated and found to be consistent with unity in all centrality classes, and also consistent with the HG-PYTHIA model, which describes the event selection and geometry biases that affect the centrality determination in peripheral Pb–Pb collisions. The measurement is compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and to the measurements of isolated photons and Z 0 bosons from the CMS experiment, which are all found to be in agreement.

System size and energy dependence of the mean transverse momentum fluctuations at the LHC

Event-by-event fluctuations of the event-wise mean transverse momentum, $\langle$p T $\rangle$, of charged particles produced in proton–proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV, Xe–Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV, and Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV are studied using the ALICE detector based on the integral correlator $\langle$$\langle$Δp T Δp T $\rangle$$\rangle$. The correlator strength is found to decrease monotonically with increasing produced charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity in all three systems. In Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions, the multiplicity dependence of the correlator deviates significantly from a simple power-law scaling as well as from the predictions of the HIJING and AMPT models. The observed deviation from power-law scaling is expected from transverse radial flow in semicentral to central Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions. In pp collisions, the correlation strength is also studied by classifying the events based on the transverse spherocity, S 0 , of the particle production at midrapidity, used as a proxy for the presence of a pronounced back-to-back jet topology. Low-spherocity (jetty) events feature a larger correlation strength than those with high spherocity (isotropic). The strength and multiplicity dependence of jetty and isotropic events are well reproduced by calculations with the PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC models.

Recent Progress on Numerical Modeling for Microgravity Electric Field Flames: Preprint

This paper presents the recent progress on the NASA Physical Science Informatics (PSI) project PeleLM CFD of Ion Driven Winds from Diffusion Flames in simulating the E-FIELD Flames microgravity results. The focus of this project is to comprehensively simulate the behavior of a small diffusion flame under the influence of an externally applied electric field in zero-gravity. To date, the capability of accurately simulating electric field flames has eluded researchers because the system exhibits dramatic ranges of coupled temporal and spatial scales. Moreover, in earth gravity the hot combustion products are subject to buoyancy effects that are difficult to isolate from those generated by the electric field. This work is an implementation in an existing powerful simulation framework (PeleLM) for this problem using PeleLMeX in order to validate the model and investigate the complex coupled system. The current effort includes establishing the domain of a diffusion coflow burner, examining the boundary conditions, flame geometry and ignition with gravitational forces and also with an electric field applied. A detailed model is used that includes the chemistry of charged ions and chemiluminescent flame intermediates to capture any feedback between ion-driven convection and combustion behavior, and to allow quantitative comparisons with experimental measurements.
