Alloys For Flexible Hoses In A Corrosive Environment

High-nickel alloy resists pitting corrosion. Report evaluates metal alloys for flexible hoses in corrosive environment. Tested to find alternatives to 304L stainless steel. Nineteen alloys selected for testing on basis of reputation for resistance to corrosion. Top five, in order of decreasing resistance to corrosion: Hastelloy(R) C-22, Inconel(R) 625, Hastelloy(R) C-276, Hastelloy(R) C-4, and Inco(R) alloy G-3. Of these, Hastelloy(R) C-22 found best for flexible-hose application.

Eddy Current System for Detection of Cracking Beneath Braiding in Corrugated Metal Hose

In this paper an eddy current system for the detection of partially-through-the-thickness cracks in corrugated metal hose is presented. Design criteria based upon the geometry and conductivity of the part are developed and applied to the fabrication of a prototype inspection system. Experimental data are used to highlight the capabilities of the system and an image processing technique is presented to improve flaw detection capabilities. A case study for detection of cracking damage in a space shuttle radiator retract flex hoses is also presented.

Special pliers connect hose containing liquid under pressure

For speed and safety in handling disconnect fittings on a hose carrying liquid under pressure, special pliers have been constructed. A gear and rack mechanism is combined with two or more wide-opening U-shaped jaws which are placed over the quick-disconnect fittings.

Plastic tubing protects flexible copper hose

Flexible copper purge and coolant hoses is covered with a high-temperature shrinkable plastic for protection against severe vibration during rocket engine tests. This type of tubing is being used on all flexible water tubes used in F-1 engine tests.

TFE-fluorocarbon liners for flexible hoses

Flexible hose handles high rates of flow under high pressures. Short lengths of tubing are overlapped to permit flexibility with much greater parallel offset.

Two-functional seal for hose connection

Seal, machined from a plastic material, prevents liquid hydrogen leakage from hose connectors. It serves as a block-type seal supporting maximum loading of the poppet with slight elastic deflection or as a lip-type seal that is deformed elastically in bending, tension, or compression by the seated poppet.
