Untangling the heavy-flavor mess: status of the Fermilab-MILC calculation of the $B_{(s)}\to D^{(\ast)}_{(s)}\ellν$ form factors

We present the status of calculations of the form factors of the most relevant heavy-to-heavy and heavy-to-light decay channels. Using seven $N_f = 2+1+1$ HISQ ensembles, with lattice spacings ranging from 0.15 fm down to 0.06 fm, we calculate the form factors of the decays, including correlations among them. More than half of our ensembles feature physical pion masses, and the heavy quarks are simulated at their physical masses using the Wilson-clover action with the Fermilab interpretation. Even though we have recently seen huge qualitative and quantitative leaps in the characterization of heavy-to-heavy decays, these advances have failed to translate into improvements for the inclusive vs exclusive question, or the matter of the Lepton Flavor Universality ratios. In particular, in the $B\to D^{\ast}\ellν$ channel, the current situation of the lattice-QCD form factors is far from clear. Further, the latest lattice-QCD results on the heavy-to-light form factors display unexplained tensions that must urgently be resolved. The work presented here is an attempt to address these issues.

Associated production of prompt $J/ψ$ and Υ mesons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The associated production of prompt J/ψ and Υ mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is studied using LHCb data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4 fb -1 . The measurement is performed for J/ψ (Υ) mesons with a transverse momentum p T < 10 (30) GeV/c in the rapidity range 2.0 < y < 4.5. In this kinematic range, the cross-section of the associated production of prompt J/ψ and Υ(1S) mesons is measured to be 133 ± 22 ± 7 ± 3 pb, with a signifcance of 7.9 σ, and that of prompt J/ψ and Υ(2S) mesons to be 76 ± 21 ± 4 ± 7 pb, with a signifcance of 4.9 σ. The frst uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to uncertainties on the used branching fractions. This is the frst observation of the associated production of J/ψ and Υ(1S) in proton-proton collisions. Diferential cross-sections are measured as functions of variables that are sensitive to kinematic correlations between the J/ψ and Υ(1S) mesons. The efective cross-sections of the associated production of prompt J/ψ and Υ mesons are obtained and found to be compatible with measurements using other particle productions.

Measurement of inclusive jet cross section and substructure in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

The jet cross section and jet-substructure observables in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =200 GeV were measured by the PHENIX Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Jets are reconstructed from charged-particle tracks and electromagnetic-calorimeter clusters using the anti-𝑘 𝑡 algorithm with a jet radius of 𝑅 = 0.3 for jets with transverse momentum within 8.0 < 𝑝 𝑇 < 40.0 GeV/𝑐 and pseudorapidity |𝜂| < 0.15. Measurements include the jet cross section, as well as distributions of SoftDrop-groomed momentum fraction (𝑧 𝑔 ), charged-particle transverse momentum with respect to jet axis (𝑗 𝑇 ), and radial distributions of charged particles within jets (𝑟). Also measured was the distribution of 𝜉 = −ln⁡(𝑧), where 𝑧 is the fraction of the jet momentum carried by the charged particle. The measurements are compared to theoretical next-to and next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations, the PYTHIA and H erwig event generators, and to other existing experimental results. Indicated from these measurements is a lower particle multiplicity in jets at RHIC energies when compared to models. Also noted are implications for future jet measurements with sPHENIX at RHIC as well as at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Differential Measurements of Jet Substructure and Partonic Energy Loss in Au+Au Collisions at √ sNN = 200 GeV

The STAR collaboration presents jet substructure measurements related to both the momentum fraction and the opening angle within jets in p+p and Au+Au collisions at √sNN =200GeV. The substructure observables include SoftDrop groomed momentum fraction (zg), groomed jet radius (Rg), and subjet momentum fraction (zSJ) and opening angle (θSJ). The latter observable is introduced for the first time. Fully corrected subjet measurements are presented for p+p collisions and are compared to leading-order Monte Carlo models. The subjet θSJ distributions reflect the jets leading opening angle and are utilized as a proxy for the resolution scale of the medium in Au+Au collisions. We compare data from Au+Au collisions to those from p+p which are embedded in minimum-bias Au+Au events in order to include the effects of detector smearing and the heavy-ion collision underlying event. The subjet observables are shown to be more robust to the background than zg and Rg. We observe no significant modifications of the subjet observables within the two highest-energy, back-to-back jets, resulting in a distribution of opening angles and the splittings that are vacuumlike. We also report measurements of the differential dijet momentum imbalance (AJ) for jets of varying θSJ. We find no qualitative differences in energy loss signatures for varying angular scales in the range 0.1< θSJ<0.3, leading to the possible interpretation that energy loss in this population of high-momentum dijet pairs, is due to soft medium-induced gluon radiation from a single color charge as it traverses the medium.

RODEM Jet Datasets

We present the RODEM Jet Datasets, a comprehensive collection of simulated large-radius jets designed to support the development and evaluation of machine-learning algorithms in particle physics. These datasets encompass a diverse range of jet sources, including quark/gluon jets, jets from the decay of W bosons, top quarks, and heavy new-physics particles. The datasets provide detailed substructure information, including jet kinematics, constituent kinematics, and track displacement details, enabling a wide range of applications in jet tagging, anomaly detection, and generative modelling.

Study of charm hadronization with prompt $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ baryons in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

The production of prompt $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ baryons is measured via the exclusive decay channel $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+}\to p{\textrm{K}}^{-}{\pi}^{+} $ at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV, using proton-proton (pp) and lead-lead (PbPb) collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The pp and PbPb data were obtained in 2017 and 2018 with integrated luminosities of 252 and 0.607 nb$^{−1}$, respectively. The measurements are performed within the $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ rapidity interval |y| < 1 with transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) ranges of 3–30 and 6–40 GeV/c for pp and PbPb collisions, respectively. Compared to the yields in pp collisions scaled by the expected number of nucleon-nucleon interactions, the observed yields of $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ with p$_{T}$> 10 GeV/c are strongly suppressed in PbPb collisions. The level of suppression depends significantly on the collision centrality. The $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $/D$^{0}$ production ratio is similar in PbPb and pp collisions at p$_{T}$> 10 GeV/c, suggesting that the coalescence process does not play a dominant role in prompt $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ baryon production at higher p$_{T}$.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Measurement of the ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ to D 0 production ratio in peripheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

We report on a measurement of the ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ to D 0 production ratio in peripheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the LHCb detector in the forward rapidity region 2 < y < 4.5. The ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ (D 0 ) hadrons are reconstructed via the decay channel ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → pK – π + (D 0 → K – π + ) for 2 < p T < 8 GeV/c and in the centrality range of about 65–90%. The results show no significant dependence on p T , y or the mean number of participating nucleons. They are also consistent with similar measurements obtained by the LHCb collaboration in pPb and Pbp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The data agree well with predictions from PYTHIA in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV but are in tension with predictions of the Statistical Hadronization model.

Heavy quark transport: a theoretical overview

A brief overview on heavy-quark-QGP interactions is presented in this work. Theories at different momentum scales are summarized, including the flavor hierarchy of jet energy loss at high pT, hadronization and the charmed hadron chemistry at medium to low pT, and the extraction of the heavy-quark-QGP potential at low pT. Additionally, recent theoretical developments on heavy quark theories are discussed, such as multi-scale transport models of heavy quarks, probing initial state effects and cold nuclear matter effects using heavy quarks, as well as extending studies from single heavy flavor hadrons to heavy flavor jets.

Minijet quenching in a concurrent jet + hydro evolution and the nonequilibrium quark-gluon plasma

Minijets, created by perturbative hard QCD collisions at moderate energies, can represent a significant portion of the total multiplicity of a heavy-ion collision event. Since their transverse momenta are initially larger than the typical saturation scale describing the bulk of the equilibrating quark-gluon plasma (QGP), they ought to be described through the physics of parton energy loss. Indeed, their typical stopping distances are larger than the usual hydrodynamization time, so they do not in general hydrodynamize at the same pace than the bulk of the collision. Therefore, in general minijets cannot be described solely by a unique preequilibrium stage that bridges the initial, overoccupied glasma state, with the hydrodynamical evolution. In this work we make use of a new concurrent minijet+hydrodynamic framework in which the properties of the hydrodynamically evolving QGP are modified due to the injection of energy and momentum from the minijets. We study the system for different choices of the minimum transverse momentum associated with minijet production. In order to achieve a realistic description of charged particle multiplicity, the amount of entropy associated to the low- x initial state needs to be reduced. Moreover, the fact that the injected momentum from the randomly oriented minijets is not correlated with the spatial gradients of the system reduces overall flow, and the value of the QGP transport coefficients needs to be reduced accordingly in order to describe the measured flow coefficients in experiments. They are, in effect, an important new source of fluctuations, resulting in a spikier, notably modified hydrodynamical evolution when compared to the scenario in which the presence of minijets is ignored. We avow that their abundance makes it necessary to include their physics in holistic descriptions of heavy-ion collisions. We discuss the impact of the minijets on a number of observables, such as p T spectra and p T -differential flow v n for a wide range of centrality classes. In contrast to elliptic, triangular or quadrangular flow, here we find that directed flow, v 1 , has the strongest potential to discriminate between different minijet production rates.

Charm quark evolution in the early stages of heavy-ion collisions

Heavy quarks are predominantly generated at the initial stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions such that heavy flavor observables have the potential to provide information on the pre-equilibrium medium dynamics. In this study, we investigate the sensitivity of D-meson $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ to early-time charm quark dynamics in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.02 TeV. We employ the IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD framework to model the evolution of the bulk medium. Charm quarks are generated using PYTHIA with nuclear parton distribution functions and evolved using Langevin dynamics within MARTINI. We observe that even though there is significant momentum broadening in the earliest stage, D-meson $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ are only weakly sensitive to pre-equilibrium interactions.

Global constraint on the jet transport coefficient from single-hadron, dihadron, and γ -hadron spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Modifications of large transverse momentum single-hadron, dihadron, and γ -hadron spectra in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are direct consequences of parton-medium interactions in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The interaction strength and underlying dynamics can be quantified by the jet transport coefficient q ̂ . We carry out the first global constraint on q ̂ using a next-to-leading order pQCD parton model with higher-twist parton energy loss and combining world experimental data on single-hadron, dihadron, and γ -hadron suppression at both RHIC and LHC energies with a wide range of centralities. The global Bayesian analysis using the information field (IF) priors provides the most stringent constraint on q ̂ ( T ) . We demonstrate in particular the progressive constraining power of the IF Bayesian analysis on the strong temperature dependence of q ̂ using data from different centralities and colliding energies. We also discuss the advantage of using both inclusive and correlation observables with different geometric biases. As a verification, the obtained q ̂ ( T ) is shown to describe data on single-hadron anisotropy at high transverse momentum well. Predictions for future jet quenching measurements in oxygen-oxygen collisions are also provided. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Heavy flavor dynamics across system size at the LHC

One of the fundamental signatures of the Quark Gluon Plasma has been the suppression of heavy flavor (specifically D mesons), which has been measured via the nuclear modification factor, R AA and azimuthal anisotropies, v n , in large systems. However, multiple competing models can reproduce the same data for R AA to v n . In this talk we break down the competing effects that conspire together to successfully reproduce R AA and v n in experimental data using Trento+v-USPhydro+DAB-MOD. Then using our best fit model we make predictions for R AA and v n across system size for 208 PbPb, 129 XeXe, 40 ArAr, and 16 OO collisions. We find that 0–10% centrality has a non-trivial interplay between the system size and eccentricities such that system size effects are masked in v 2 whereas in 30–50% centrality the eccentricities are approximately constant across system size and, therefore, is a better centrality class to study D meson dynamics across system size.

New metric improving Bayesian calibration of a multistage approach studying hadron and inclusive jet suppression

We study parton energy-momentum exchange with the quark gluon plasma (QGP) within a multistage approach composed of in-medium Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution at high virtuality, and (linearized) Boltzmann transport formalism at lower virtuality. This multistage simulation is then calibrated in comparison with high- p T charged hadrons, D mesons, and the inclusive jet nuclear modification factors, using Bayesian model-to-data comparison, to extract the virtuality-dependent transverse momentum broadening transport coefficient q ̂ . To facilitate this undertaking, we develop a quantitative metric for validating the Bayesian workflow, which is used to analyze the sensitivity of various model parameters to individual observables. The usefulness of this new metric in improving Bayesian model emulation is shown to be highly beneficial for future such analyses. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Observation of Charmonium Sequential Suppression in Heavy-Ion Collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We report measurements of charmonium sequential suppression in Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =200 GeV with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The inclusive yield ratio of 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) to J/𝜓 as a function of transverse momentum is reported, along with the centrality dependence of the double ratio, defined as the 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) to J/𝜓 ratio in heavy-ion collisions relative to that in 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions. In the 0–80% centrality class, the double ratio is found to be 0.41±0.10 (stat)±0.03 (syst)±0.02 (ref), lower than unity with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. This provides experimental evidence that 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) is significantly more suppressed than J/𝜓 in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. This sequential suppression pattern seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions, but with no significant dependence on the transverse momentum.

Measurements of the suppression and correlations of dijets in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Studies of the correlations of the two highest transverse momentum (leading) jets in individual Pb+Pb collision events can provide information about the mechanism of jet quenching by the hot and dense matter created in such collisions. In Pb+Pb and $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, measurements of the leading dijet transverse momentum ($p_T$) correlations are presented. Additionally, measurements in Pb+Pb collisions of the dijet pair nuclear modification factors projected along leading and subleading jet $p_T$ are made. The measurements are performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC with 260 pb –1 of pp data collected in 2017 and 2.2 nb –1 of Pb+Pb data collected in 2015 and 2018. An unfolding procedure is applied to the two-dimensional leading and subleading jet $p_T$ distributions to account for experimental effects in the measurement of both jets. Results are provided for dijets with leading jet $p_T$ greater than 100 GeV. Measurements of the dijet-yield-normalized $x_{J}$ distributions in Pb+Pb collisions show an increased fraction of imbalanced jets compared to pp collisions; these measurements are in agreement with previous measurements of the same quantity at 2.76 TeV in the overlapping kinematic range. Measurements of the absolutely normalized dijet rate in Pb+Pb and pp collisions are also presented, and show that balanced dijets are significantly more suppressed than imbalanced dijets in Pb+Pb collisions. It is observed in the measurements of the pair nuclear modification factors that the subleading jets are significantly suppressed relative to leading jets with $p_T$ between 100 and 316 GeV for all centralities in Pb+Pb collisions.
