Subregion-subalgebra duality: Emergence of space and time in holography

In holographic duality, a higher dimensional quantum gravity system emerges from a lower dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) with a large number of degrees of freedom. We propose a formulation of duality for a general causally complete bulk spacetime region, called subregion-subalgebra duality, which provides a framework to describe how geometric notions in the gravity system, such as spacetime subregions, different notions of times, and causal structure, emerge from the dual CFT. Subregion-subalgebra duality generalizes and brings new insights into subregion-subregion duality (or equivalently entanglement wedge reconstruction). It provides a mathematically precise definition of subregion-subregion duality and gives an independent definition of entanglement wedges without using entropy. Geometric properties of entanglement wedges, including those that play a crucial role in interpreting the bulk as a quantum error correcting code, can be understood from the duality as the geometrization of the superadditivity of certain algebras. Using general boundary subalgebras rather than those associated with geometric subregions makes it possible to find duals for general bulk spacetime regions, including those not touching the boundary. Applying subregion-subalgebra duality to a boundary state describing a single-sided black hole also provides a precise way to define mirror operators. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Metric isometries, holography, and continuous symmetry operators

In the AdS/CFT correspondence, a topological symmetry operator of the boundary conformal field theory (CFT) is dual to a dynamical brane in the gravitational bulk. Said differently, this predicts a dynamical brane for every global symmetry of the boundary CFT. We analyze this correspondence for continuous symmetries which arise from a consistent truncation of isometries on the “internal” factor 𝑋 of AdS × 𝑋. In the extra-dimensional geometry, these branes are associated with various metric singularities and do not arise from wrapped D-branes. Boosts relate configurations interpreted as topological symmetry operators and heavy defects in the CFT. From the perspective of the AdS factor, with gravity and bulk gauge fields, these are codimension-2 Gukov-Witten-like vortex configurations which are the gravity duals of 0-form symmetry operators. These effective branes come with an asymptotic tension and size which is also fully fixed by bulk dynamics. We use this higher-dimensional perspective to determine properties of the worldvolume theory for these branes. We also discuss how these considerations generalize to more general quantum field theories engineered via string theory which need not possess a semiclassical gravity dual.

One-shot holography

Following the work of [J. High Energy Phys. 04, 062 (2021)], we define a generally covariant max-entanglement wedge of a boundary region B, which we conjecture to be the bulk region reconstructible from B. We similarly define a covariant min-entanglement wedge, which we conjecture to be the bulk region that can influence the state on B. We prove that the min- and max-entanglement wedges obey various properties necessary for this conjecture, such as nesting, inclusion of the causal wedge, and a reduction to the usual quantum extremal surface prescription in the appropriate special cases. These proofs rely on one-shot versions of the (restricted) quantum focusing conjecture (QFC) that we conjecture to hold. We argue that these QFCs imply a one-shot generalized second law (GSL) and quantum Bousso bound. Moreover, in a particular semiclassical limit we prove this one-shot GSL directly using algebraic techniques. Finally, in order to derive our results, we extend both the frameworks of one-shot quantum Shannon theory and state-specific reconstruction to finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras, allowing nontrivial centers.

3d gravity from Virasoro TQFT: Holography, wormholes and knots

We further develop the description of three-dimensional quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of Virasoro TQFT formulated in our previous paper [SciPost Phys. 15, 151 (2023)]. We compare the partition functions computed in the Virasoro TQFT formalism to the semiclassical evaluation of Euclidean gravity partition functions. This matching is highly non-trivial, but can be checked directly in some examples. We then showcase the formalism in action, by computing the gravity partition functions of many relevant topologies. For holographic applications, we focus on the partition functions of Euclidean multi-boundary wormholes with three-punctured spheres as boundaries. This precisely quantifies the higher moments of the structure constants in the proposed ensemble boundary dual and subjects the proposal to thorough checks. Finally, we investigate in detail the example of the figure eight knot complement as a hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that the Virasoro TQFT partition function is identical to the partition function computed in Teichmüller theory, thus giving strong evidence for the equivalence of these TQFTs. We also show how to produce a large class of manifolds via Dehn surgery on the figure eight knot.

Holography: Quantum Mechanical Aspects of Black Holes (Final Report)

Current theories of fundamental physics are based on quantum field theory, unifying quantum mechanics and special relativity. A similar unification of quantum field theory with gravity has been elusive. String theory is a consistent model of quantum gravity and it is important to identify general lessons that can be applied to the real world. The main technique that emerged from such studies has been the gravitational path integral. During the period of this grant, the PI has explored the implication of the gravitational path integral in novel setups to uncover new features of rotating black holes in four dimensions, as well as increasing our understanding of some specific black holes in string theory.

Wave-Optics Simulation Framework of Fourier Transform Holography with XMCD

We present a wave-optics simulation framework, implemented within the SRW, for modeling FTH with XMCD contrast. The framework propagates coherent, circularly polarized X-ray wavefronts from an undulator source through the sample and optics to the detector, reconstructing real-space images from the resulting holograms. Three principal extensions are introduced: (i) incorporation of polarization-dependent refractive indices in the sample plane, enabling direct simulation of XMCD contrast, (ii) a memory-efficient wavefront-splitting propagation scheme that treats individual apertures independently and coherently combines their fields at detector, and (iii) an integrated reconstruction module that delivers holographic images within the same framework. Together, these advances establish a versatile tool for quantitative exploration of coherence, aperture geometry, and detector sampling, and for the design and interpretation of XMCD-FTH experiments at synchrotron beamlines.

The Baby Universe is Fine and the CFT Knows It: On Holography for Closed Universes

Big bang/big crunch closed universes can be realized in AdS/CFT, even though they lack asymptotically AdS boundaries. With enough bulk entanglement, the bulk Hilbert space of a closed universe can be holographically encoded in the CFT. We clarify the relation of this encoding to observer-clone proposals and refute recent arguments about the breakdown of semiclassical physics in such spaces. In the limit of no bulk entanglement, the holographic encoding breaks down. The oft-cited one-dimensional nature of the closed universe Hilbert space represents the limitation of the external (CFT) Hilbert space to access the quantum information in the closed universe, similar to the limitations imposed on observers outside a perfectly isolated quantum lab. We advocate that the CFT nevertheless continues to determine the physical properties of the closed universe in this regime, showing how to interpret this relationship in terms of a final state projection in the closed universe. We provide a dictionary between the final state wavefunction and CFT data. We propose a model of the emergence of an arrow of time in the universe with a given initial or final state projection. Finally, we show that the conventional EFT in the closed universe, without any projection, can be recovered as a maximally ignorant description of the final state. This conventional EFT is encoded in CFT data, and it can be probed by computing coarse-grained observables. We provide an example of one such observable. Taken together, these results amount to a clean bill of health for baby universes born of AdS/CFT.

Chiral Kirigami for Bend‐Tolerant Reconfigurable Hologram with Continuously Variable Chirality Measures

Abstract Despite the commonality of static holograms, the holography with multiple information layers and reconfigurable grey‐scale images at communication frequencies remain a confluence of scientific challenges. One well‐known difficulty is the simultaneous modulation of phase and amplitude of electromagnetic wavefronts with a high modulation depth. A less appreciated challenge is scrambling of the information and images with hologram bending. Here, this work shows that chirality‐guided pixelation of plasmonic kirigami sheets enables tunable multiplexed holography at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The convex and concave structures with slanted Au strips exhibit gradual variations in geometries facilitating modulation of light ellipticity reaching 40 deg. Real‐time switching of 3D images of the letter “ M ” and the Mona Lisa demonstrates the possibility of complex grey‐scale information content and importance of continuously variable mirror asymmetry. Microscale chirality measures of each pixel experiences little change with bending while retaining controllable reconfigurability upon stretching, which translates to remarkable resilience of chiral holograms to bending. Simplicity of their design with local chirality measures opens the door to information technologies with fault‐tolerant THz encryption, wearable holographic devices, and new communication technologies.

Relational bulk reconstruction from modular flow

Abstract The entanglement wedge reconstruction paradigm in AdS/CFT states that for a bulk qudit within the entanglement wedge of a boundary subregion$$ \overline{A} $$ A ¯ , operators acting on the bulk qudit can be reconstructed as CFT operators on$$ \overline{A} $$ A ¯ . This naturally fits within the framework of quantum error correction, with the CFT states containing the bulk qudit forming a code protected against the erasure of the boundary subregionA. In this paper, we set up and study a framework for relational bulk reconstruction in holography: given two code subspaces both protected against erasure of the boundary regionA, the goal is to relate the operator reconstructions between the two spaces. To accomplish this, we assume that the two code subspaces are smoothly connected by a one-parameter family of codes all protected against the erasure ofA, and that the maximally-entangled states on these codes are all full-rank. We argue that such code subspaces can naturally be constructed in holography in a “measurement-based” setting. In this setting, we derive a flow equation for the operator reconstruction of a fixed code subspace operator using modular theory which can, in principle, be integrated to relate the reconstructed operators all along the flow. We observe a striking resemblance between our formulas for relational bulk reconstruction and the infinite-time limit of Connes cocycle flow, and take some steps towards making this connection more rigorous. We also provide alternative derivations of our reconstruction formulas in terms of a canonical reconstruction map we call the modular reflection operator.

The boundary entropy function for interface conformal field theories

In 1+1 dimensional conformal field theory with a boundary the boundary contribution to the entanglement entropy is determined by a single number g effectively counting the boundary degrees of freedom. In contrast, in 1+1 dimensional interface CFTs the corresponding quantity is a non-trivial function depending on the position of the interval relative to the interface, giving access to much more detailed information about the defect. In this work we determined this g -function in several examples using holography and derive some of its basic properties from holography and strong subadditivity.

Measures of Holographic Correlation: Discovery, Interpretation, Application (Final Report)

The main goals of this project were twofold: (1) to find measures of quantum correlations that are amenable to interpretation in a holographic context, and use these measures to develop a more detailed understanding of holography itself and (2) To use insights developed in a holographic setting to better understand the theory of quantum information in more traditional (nonholographic) settings.

Imaging Photonic Resonances within an All‐Dielectric Metasurface via Photoelectron Emission Microscopy

Dielectric metasurfaces, through volume‐type photonic resonances, enable precise control of light‐matter interactions for applications including imaging, holography, and sensing. The application space of dielectric metasurfaces has extended from infrared to visible wavelengths by incorporating high refractive index materials, such as titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ). Understanding the fundamental and fabrication limits for these applications requires metrology with nanoscale resolution, sensitivity to electromagnetic fields within the meta‐atom volume, and far‐field excitation. In this work, photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) is used to image field distributions of photonic resonances in a TiO 2 metasurface excited with far‐field, visible‐wavelength illumination. The local volumetric field variations within the meta‐atoms are analyzed as a function of illumination angle and polarization by comparing photoelectron images to finite‐difference time‐domain simulations. This study determines the inelastic mean free path of very low‐energy (<1 eV) photoelectrons to be 35 ± 10 nm, which is comparable to the meta‐atom height thereby highlighting PEEM sensitivity to resonances within the volume. Additionally, the simulations reveal high sensitivity of PEEM images to an in‐plane component of the illumination k ‐vector. These results demonstrate that photoelectron imaging with subwavelength resolution offers unique advantages for examining light‐matter interactions in volume‐type (as opposed to surface) photonic modes within dielectric nanophotonic structures.

Quantum mechanics and observers for gravity in a closed universe

Recent arguments based on the quantum extremal surface formula or the gravitational path integral have given fairly compelling evidence that the Hilbert space of quantum gravity in a closed universe is one-dimensional and real. How can this be consistent with the complexity of our own experiences? In this paper we propose that the experiences of any observer Ob in a closed universe can be approximately described by a quantum mechanical theory with a Hilbert space whose dimension is roughly e S Ob , where S Ob is the number of degrees of freedom of Ob. Moreover we argue that the errors in this description are exponentially small in S Ob . We give evidence for this proposal by incorporating it into the gravitational path integral and the coding interpretation of holography in simple models and seeing that it works, and we explain how similar effects arise in black hole physics in appropriate circumstances.

The gravitational index of 5d black holes and black strings

The supersymmetric index of 5d black strings and spinning black holes in M-theory is related to that of 4d black holes in type IIA supergravity when both theories are compactified on the same Calabi-Yau threefold. We find the finite-temperature saddles for the 5d gravitational supersymmetric index by uplifting the recently found attractor saddles of the corresponding 4d index. We study uplifts for two types of geometries: 5d black holes and 5d black strings. For 5d black holes, the uplift guarantees that the index of 4d and 5d black holes match. For 5d black strings, the saddle reproduces the microscopic index at leading order in G N , even without the conventional decoupling limit taken in AdS/CFT. In particular, when the temperature is set to be finite in the 5d flat space region, the black string index is computed from an asymptotically flat solution where the AdS throat is absent. Further, as the temperature is lowered and eventually becomes infinitesimally small in the flat space region, the solution admits a novel decoupling limit in which the AdS 3 throat takes the form of a finite-temperature BTZ black hole that is known to compute the index in AdS 3 /CFT 2 . This represents the first step towards understanding holography for supersymmetric observables in flat space, away from the decoupling limit.

Discrete Max-Focusing

The Quantum Focusing Conjecture (QFC) lies at the foundation of holography and semiclassical gravity. The QFC implies the Bousso bound and the Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC). The QFC also ensures the consistency of the quantum extremal surface prescription and bulk reconstruction in AdS/CFT. However, the central object in the QFC — the expansion of lightrays — is not defined at points where geodesics enter or leave a null congruence. Moreover, the expansion admits three inequivalent quantum extensions in terms of the conditional max, min, and von Neumann entropies.
