Pion Energy Regression in High-Granularity Calorimeter Prototype

The dataset consists of simulations of calibrated reconstructed hits produced by a pion passing through the HGCAL test beam prototype. For the simulations, Monte Carlo method is used to produce the pions with energy ranging from 10 to as high as 500 GeV. The dataset contains the coordinates of the calibrated reconstructed hits in the prototype along with the calibrated energy in units of MIP. The HDF5 files can be extracted from the gzip files.

Modeling of surface-state induced inter-electrode isolation of n -on- p devices in mixed-field and γ -irradiation environments

Position sensitive n-on-p silicon sensors will be utilized in the tracker and in the High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The detrimental effect of the radiation-induced accumulation of positive net oxide charge on position resolution in n-on-p sensors has typically been countered by the application of isolation implants like p-stop or p-spray between n + -electrodes. In addition to the positively charged layer inside the oxide and close to the Si/SiO 2 -interface, surface damage introduced by ionizing radiation in SiO 2 -passivated silicon particle detectors includes the accumulation of trapped-oxide-charge and interface traps. A previous study of either n/γ (mixed field)- or γ-irradiated Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (MOS) capacitors showed evidence of substantially higher introduction rates of acceptor- and donor-type deep interface traps (N it,acc/don ) in mixed-field environment. Here, in this work, an inter-pad and -strip resistance (or resistivity (ρ int )) simulation study of n-on-p sensors with and without p-stop isolation implants was conducted for both irradiation types. Higher levels of ρint showed correlation to higher densities of deep N it,acc/don , with the inter-pad isolation performance of the mixed-field irradiated sensors becoming independent of the presence of p-stop implant between the n + - electrodes up to about 100 kGy. The low introduction rates of deep N it,acc/don in γ-irradiated sensors resulted in high sensitivity of ρ int to the presence and peak doping of p-stop above the lowest dose of about 7 kGy in the study. As a consequence of the advantageous influence of radiation-induced accumulation of deep N it on the inter-electrode isolation, position sensitive n-on-p sensors without isolation implants may be considered for future HEP-experiments where the radiation is largely due to hadrons.

Using graph neural networks to reconstruct charged pion showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter

A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showersin the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. TheHGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse andlongitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors andscintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are acombination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, andsteel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method isbased on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamicreduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm isable to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinderthe reconstruction of hadronic showers using classicalreconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in themultiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower'sconstituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated usingtest beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCALaccompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. Thecapability of the method to mitigate the impact of energy leakagefrom the calorimeter is also demonstrated.

CMS High Granularity Calorimeter ECON-D ASIC overview and radiation testing results

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment’s High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) upgrade replaces the CMS electromagnetic and hadronic endcap calorimeters in preparation for the high-rate and high-radiation environment of the High Luminosity LHC. To effectively use the over 6 million channels of this highly-segmented “imaging” calorimeter, CMS is pioneering very front-end data compression with the Endcap Concentrator (ECON) ASICs – the ECON-T for the trigger path and the ECON-D for the data path. These 65 nm CMOS ASICs are radiation tolerant (200 Mrad) and low-power (< 2.5 mW/channel). In June 2023, we received the first full-functionality prototype of the data path concentrator ASIC, the ECON-D-P1. This talk will present an overview of the ECON-D-P1, summarize functionality and system testing, and present results from both Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and Single Event Effect (SEE) testing campaigns completed in summer 2023, validating the ECON-D radiation tolerant performance.

DECAL MDN Resolution Calibration

The simulated pixelated calorimeter uses 0.1 mm × 0.1 mm silicon pixels (0.0001 cm²) silicon pixels as active layers — far finer than current concepts like HGCAL (~0.5 cm²) — improving energy resolution through much finer segmentation. While the standard resolution formalism fits three numbers to a handful of discrete test-beam energies, this work is a first try at a more data-efficient alternative: learning the full response shape continuously in energy with a mixture density network. This continuous, differentiable surrogate is a natural building block for fast simulation of extremely complex calorimeters.

Functional Verification for Endcap Concentrator ASICs in the High-Granularity Calorimeter Upgrade of CMS

The High-Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) of CMS will undergo a major upgrade during Long-Shutdown 3. The Endcap Concentrator (ECON) ASICs represent key elements in the readout chain, processing trigger (ECON-T) and data (ECON-D) streams from the HGCROC to the lpGBT. The ECONs will operate in a radiation environment with a High-Energy Hadron (HEH) flux of $3\cdot10^{6} cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. This contribution describes the Universal Verification Methodology (UVM)-based functional verification of the ECON ASICs focusing on the re-use of existing components to manage the complexity of the verification environment.
