The STAR computer - A self-testing-and- repairing computer for spacecraft guidance, control, and automatic maintenance

Successful planetary exploration missions have been completed by unmanned Mariner spacecraft, which were designed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Mariner II completed a 109-day flyby mission to Venus on December 14, 1962. This mission was followed by the flyby of Mars and return of 21 historic photographs of its surface by Mariner IV in July 1965. Further successful missions followed: Mariner V to Venus in 1967, Mariners VI and VII to Mars in 1969. In all of these missions, a Central Computer and Sequencer onboard the spacecraft was used to provide on-board control functions, although complete ground backup was also available.

Automatic weld torch guidance control system

A highly reliable, fully digital, closed circuit television optical, type automatic weld seam tracking control system was developed. This automatic tracking equipment is used to reduce weld tooling costs and increase overall automatic welding reliability. The system utilizes a charge injection device digital camera which as 60,512 inidividual pixels as the light sensing elements. Through conventional scanning means, each pixel in the focal plane is sequentially scanned, the light level signal digitized, and an 8-bit word transmitted to scratch pad memory. From memory, the microprocessor performs an analysis of the digital signal and computes the tracking error. Lastly, the corrective signal is transmitted to a cross seam actuator digital drive motor controller to complete the closed loop, feedback, tracking system. This weld seam tracking control system is capable of a tracking accuracy of + or - 0.2 mm, or better. As configured, the system is applicable to square butt, V-groove, and lap joint weldments.

Automated weld torch guidance control system

A device for automatically controlling the movement of a welding torch while welding an elongated joint is described. A charge injection television camera is carried on a movable support. The camera includes a matrix of individual light sensing video elements which generate voltages responsive to light reflected off of the joint and surrounding areas of the work piece. The voltages produced by the pixels are converted to digital words which are fed to a microprocessor for generating an error signal. This error signal is fed to a digital motor which is used to drive a movable support upon which the television camera is carried.

Analysis of a Bank Control Guidance for Aerocapture at Uranus

We apply the Fully Numerical Predictor-corrector Aerocapture Guidance to capture a vehicle into orbit for a mission at Uranus. Using the Genesis flight mechanics simulation, we analyze both undispersed and dispersed trajectories in order to tune the guidance parameters. We then assess the performance of the guidance using Monte Carlo analyses. Properly accounting for the oblateness of Uranus within the guidance proves to be critical. We identify high-to-low density gradients as the cause of large target orbit misses. Intentionally targeting a steeper flight-path angle at entry interface mitigates the risk of exiting the atmosphere on a hyperbolic orbit. Finally, We deliver the guidance code and tuned parameters for integration into the Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories II.

Apollo experience report guidance and control systems: Primary guidance, navigation, and control system development

The primary guidance, navigation, and control systems for both the lunar module and the command module are described. Development of the Apollo primary guidance systems is traced from adaptation of the Polaris Mark II system through evolution from Block I to Block II configurations; the discussion includes design concepts used, test and qualification programs performed, and major problems encountered. The major subsystems (inertial, computer, and optical) are covered. Separate sections on the inertial components (gyroscopes and accelerometers) are presented because these components represent a major contribution to the success of the primary guidance, navigation, and control system.

Report of the Panel on Guidance, Navigation, and Control

Guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) systems have historically been vital to improving operational capability of aircraft. The development of autopilots and electronic navigation systems has greatly aided the crew in flying precise routes in all weather conditions while at the same time reducing pilot workload. Advances in high-integrity onboard computing and electronics technology have resulted in a significant increase in the capability of these subsystems to perform more reliably, efficiently, and safely. Onboard computing and control system capability has provided new design approaches for the aircraft designer. By using automatic control systems to stabilize the aircraft, the designer can relax certain conventional aerodynamic stability requirements and achieve aircraft performance benefits. Thus, modern fighter aircraft are designed with low levels, or in fact, negative levels of longitudinal static stability to boost maneuvering capability and cruise performance, relying on the use of full-time, full-authority automatic stability augmentation systems to stabilize the aircraft. During the next 20 years, GNC systems will become a driving force in aircraft design. Instead of making separately designed major aircraft systems work together, the designer will exploit the interaction and integration of aerodynamic, structural, and propulsion system controls to provide a better aircraft. The benefits of such integrated designs have been demonstrated already. Integrated digital control of the engine inlet and autopilot systems on a NASA YF-12 research aircraft resulted in a range increase of 7 percent. A civil transport derivative using extensions on each wing and an active control system to minimize the requirement for structural modifications achieved significant cruise performance improvements. These are first-generation applications of advanced GNC systems. More significant benefits are achievable by the year 2000. Complete integration of aerodynamic, propulsion and structural controls, and mission avionics will provide dramatically better aircraft performance, new capability (low observability, supermaneuverability) and/or improved mission effectiveness. This requires a concurrent, multidisciplinary design approach early in the design stage. The role of advanced GNC systems in future aircraft is not an option.

Autocommander: A Supervisory Controller for Integrated Guidance and Control for the 2nd Generation Reusable Launch Vehicle

This paper presents a hierarchical architecture for integrated guidance and control that achieves risk and cost reduction for NASA's 2d generation reusable launch vehicle (RLV). Guidance, attitude control, and control allocation subsystems that heretofore operated independently will now work cooperatively under the coordination of a top-level autocommander. In addition to delivering improved performance from a flight mechanics perspective, the autocommander is intended to provide an autonomous supervisory control capability for traditional mission management under nominal conditions, G&C reconfiguration in response to effector saturation, and abort mode decision-making upon vehicle malfunction. This high-level functionality is to be implemented through the development of a relational database that is populated with the broad range of vehicle and mission specific data and translated into a discrete event system model for analysis, simulation, and onboard implementation. A Stateflow Autocoder software tool that translates the database into the Stateflow component of a Matlab/Simulink simulation is also presented.
