Fault Contribution of Grid-Following and Grid-Forming Inverters Considering Generic Inverter Controls and Ride-through Requirements

Gradual transformation of the synchronous generator (SG)-dominated power systems to inverter-based resource (IBR)-dominated power systems is bringing new challenges regarding power system protection. Increasing IBR’s penetration will reduce the reliability of protection coordination, originally developed for SG-dominated power systems, potentially leading to less accurate calculation or even mis-operation. Thus, new protection schemes compatible with IBR-dominated power systems should be established. Prior to establishing the protection schemes, research on the fault contribution of generic IBR models should be conducted considering interconnection requirements. This paper conducts fault current contribution analysis of generic grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) inverters considering interconnection requirements using an electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation tool. To do this, EMT-based generic GFL models have been developed with the ride-through requirements from IEEE-1547 standards. In addition, the major functions of the generic models are explained. Then, the fault current analysis was conducted using GFL and GFM inverters in a single-inverter-infinite-bus system and a modified IEEE 34-node system considering different grid, fault, inverter control parameters.

FLIT: A Generic Fortran Library based on Interfaces and Templates

This Fortran code consists of multiple modules with a focus on simplifying array operations, image processing, and numerical computation especially for computational geophysics applications. We intend to use this code to demonstrate the application and usefulness of Fortran interface and templates for generic programming, especially for computational geophysics and seismology applications. The code has several notable features. Firstly, it is based on a modularized structure, where each module contains multiple functions but with a focus of functionality. Secondly, it heavily uses interfaces and templates for improving the genericness and convenience of the resulting code, where a same function interface can enclose a group of functions that perform the same functionality but with inputs/output variables of different data types. Thirdly, it includes a variety of generic functions with an emphasis on array operations, such as rotation, flipping, cropping, padding, fast Fourier transform, Gaussian blurring, interpolation, and so on. We name this package FLIP – a generic Fortran Library based on Interfaces and Templates.

Developing Generic Prior Distributions for Common Cause Failure Alpha Factors and Causal Alpha Factors

This report is a revision of the original report, INL/LTD-17-43723. Distribution of the original report was to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) only, and the report was not made available to the public. The original report was revised as this report for public distribution. This report presents the latest update of generic prior distributions for common cause failure (CCF) alpha factors, as well as the development of new generic prior distributions for CCF causal alpha factors. The history of CCF treatment and parameter estimations is reviewed. The existing process for developing generic prior distributions is reviewed and used to develop new priors for CCF alpha factors and causal alpha factors. For causal alpha factors, different priors are developed for the five different CCF cause groups: Component (GC), Design (GD), Environment (GE), Human (GH), and Other (GO). These generic prior distributions could be used in the Standardized Plant Analysis Risk (SPAR) models for CCF parameter estimation. The issues and preliminary thoughts regarding prior distribution development are documented. Potential future work is then proposed for improving the process of developing priors.

NRAP-Open-IAM: Generic Aquifer Component Development and Testing

The Generic Aquifer Model calculates the concentrations of dissolved salt and dissolved CO 2 surrounding a leaking legacy well. The Generic Aquifer model can also estimate the size of an “impact plume” where concentration changes exceed user-specified thresholds. The model is a component of NRAP-Open-IAM, an open-source Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) developed by the National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP) to perform risk assessment for geologic CO 2 storage. The input parameters were selected to cover a wide range of groundwater aquifers and leakage rates. The generic aquifer model was developed using a generative adversarial deep learning network, trained using a large synthetic dataset of STOMP multiphase flow simulations. The deep learning model predictions of dissolved salt and dissolved CO 2 in the aquifer compare well to the original STOMP simulation results. The extent of aquifer impacted by leaking CO 2 or brine is calculated using a user-defined mass fraction threshold. The aquifer impact volumes calculated based on STOMP simulation results compare well to those calculated based on the deep learning model. In a provided python script, gridded observation results from the generic aquifer component of NRAP-Open-IAM are converted to HDF5 format files for monitoring design with the DREAM code.

NWGraph: A Library of Generic Graph Algorithms and Data Structures in C++20

The C++ Standard Library is a valuable collection of generic algorithms and data structures that improves the usability and reliability of C++ software. Graph algorithms and data structures are notably absent from the standard library, and previous attempts to fill this gap have not gained widespread adoption. With the new addition of ranges and concepts in C++20, the language has the mechanisms to cleanly support generic graph algorithms as operations on a range of ranges. This report presents NWGraph, a generic C++ graph library for expressing graph algorithms in a modern, composable, and extensible, aka generic, fashion.

Output feedback and generic stabilizability

Attention is given to questions of pole placement and stabilization for generic linear systems with prescribed state, input and output dimension for the case where the controller must be implemented by linear memoryless output feedback. A criterion is presented in terms of a special pole placement property for generic stabilizability, and this criterion is used to describe constraints on the dimension which are consistent with generic stabilizability. Also treated are the rationality and solvability by radicals of stabilizing or pole positioning gains, and the way in which decision algebra can theoretically handle existence questions for generic systems is described.

Performance degradation of a model helicopter rotor with a generic ice shape

An experimental program using a commercially available remotely controlled model helicopter in the Texas A&M University (TAMU) subsonic wind tunnel has been conducted to investigate the performance degradation resulting from the simulated formation of ice on the leading edge of the main rotor blades in both hover and forward flight. The rotor blades utilized a NACA 0012 airfoil with a 2.5-in. constant chord. A generic ice shape derived from a predetermined natural ice condition was applied to the 53.375-in.-diameter main rotor, and thrust and torque coefficients were measured for the main rotor as functions of velocity, main rotor rpm, fuselage angle of incidence, collective pitch angle, and spanwise extent of icing. The model helicopter test exhibited significant performance degradation of the main rotor when generic ice was added. An increase of approximately 150 percent in torque coefficient to maintain a constant thrust coefficient was noted when generic ice had been applied to the 85 percent rotor radial location. Also, considerable additional degradation occurred when generic ice was applied to the 100 percent rotor radial location, as compared with the 85 percent simulated ice performance values, indicating the sensitivity of the rotor tip region.

Generic POCC architecture: Revised recommended refinements and object-oriented interfaces

This document is a sequel to the report entitled Generic POCC Architectures, dated April 5, 1989, prepared by CTA under Contract NAS5-31500, Task 28-11600. That document presented a generic architecture based upon current technology, and a series of three refinements based on object-oriented analysis principles and expectations for POCC evolution. The current document revisits the object-oriented analysis of POCC's. We have reassessed the functional groupings that best adhere to object-oriented principles and have revised the recommended architecture accordingly. We present an updated view of the recommended generic POCC architecture using the same graphical models as the previous document: entity-relationship diagrams, dataflow diagrams, and composition graphs. In addition, we present another view in the form of entity-interface diagrams (EID's). EID's may be viewed as a precursor to object diagrams which are the basic construct of the general object-oriented design (GOOD) methodology. The entity-interface diagrams, together with their textual annotations, constitute our specification of object-oriented interfaces in the generic architecture.

Type-Safe Generic Programming in Fortran

When the Fortran language committee first collected requests for new language features for what has now become the Fortran 2023 standard, support for generic programming emerged as a top priority. However, due to the anticipated complexity, a dedicated committee subgroup was formed, and implementation of generic programming was purposely spread across two language release cycles -- aiming for what is internally referred to as F202Y. In this talk, I will begin with a brief overview of existing Fortran features that support generic programming and then proceed to a detailed examination of the plans for F202Y. This discussion will include motivating use cases, type-safe design goals, (probable) syntax, and a few simple examples. I conclude with a discussion on the likely limitations of generic programming in F202Y and my expectations for extended capabilities in the subsequent release, F203X.

In this paper we show that the richness of graph algorithms and data structures can in fact be captured by straightforward composition of existing C++ mechanisms. Generic programming is algorithm-oriented. Accordingly, we apply a systematic approach to analyzing a broad set of graph algorithms, “lift” unnecessary constraints from them, and organize the resulting set of minimal common type requirements, i.e., concepts, for defining their interfaces. By using the newly available ranges and concepts in C++20, the type requirements for generic graph algorithms can be succinctly expressed. The generic algorithms and data structures resulting from our analysis are realized in NWGraph, in a modern, composable, and extensible C++ library.

Validation of the Fault Ride-Through Response of a Generic EMT Inverter Model by Laboratory Testing

This paper presents the validation of the fault ride-through response of a large-scale inverter model using laboratory testing of a commercial inverter. First, we present the generic inverter model specifications. The generic inverter control is developed based on the fault ride-through response performance requirements of IEEE Std 2800-2022 for inverter-based resources. Next, we present laboratory tests that emulate voltages at the inverter terminal resulting from balanced and unbalanced faults on the transmission system. The tests are performed on a commercia12.2 MVA battery storage inverter at the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Comparisons of the model's response to the laboratory measurements show the generic model presented can predict the controlled response of the commercial equipment. The differences between the model's response and the laboratory measurements during the initial transient at fault inception are discussed.

Generic Multi-Frequency Modelling of Converter-Connected Renewable Energy Generators Considering Frequency and Sequence Couplings

Frequency and sequence couplings can compromise the trustworthiness of multi-frequency models for converter-based systems. There have been effective attempts to address the couplings mainly by linearized averaged models. Only a few studies have been conducted on practical optimization of such models with enormous matrices and experimental results. This paper provides a generic theory for coupling patterns and proposes a multi-frequency modelling method to detect and address only the main couplings in the sequence domain for converter-connected renewable energy generators. The proposed generic model is based on empirical tests using small-signal perturbations and adopting Fourier transform on the switching converter response. The proposed theory and modelling methodology are verified using a 7MVA grid emulator for voltage perturbation tests on a 2MVA photo-voltaic converter. Accordingly, the couplings can exist in more generic forms, including multiples of perturbation and fundamental frequencies. To the best of our knowledge, the patterns with the multiples of the perturbation frequency have been overlooked in the literature. Furthermore, the mirror frequency concept is valid for all coupling patterns and is included in the proposed model. Besides, the proposed patterns and the environment noise levels have been practical criteria for selecting the main couplings.

Generic Airspace Survey

This paper reports on an extension of generic airspace research to explore the amount of memorization and specialized skills required to manage sectors with specific characteristics or factors. Fifty-five retired controllers were given an electronic survey where they rated the amount of memorization or specialized skills needed for sixteen generic airspace factors. The results suggested similarities in the pattern of ratings between different areas of the US (East, Central, and West). The average of the ratings for each area also showed some differences between regions, with ratings being generally higher in the East area. All sixteen factors were rated as moderately to highly important and may be useful for future research on generic airspace, air traffic controller workload, etc.

Key Factors in Semi-Generic Coarse-Grained Modeling of Solid Polymer Electrolytes

Given the long length and time scales of interest and strong interactions present in solid polymer electrolytes, coarse-grained molecular models can be useful in understanding the molecular basis of their structure and transport properties. Rather than representing atoms individually, coarse-grained models use beads representing groups of atoms, making the system simpler and more efficient. Generic coarse-grained models, that are not built based on matching a particular atomistic system, can provide insight into the important physical considerations that apply across different chemical systems, though it can be unclear how to best match to experimental systems and capture relevant experimental behaviors with as simple of a model as possible. Here, we build on generic bead-spring models, but use stiff angle potentials, set different bead properties for different polymer types, and include additional ion parameters, creating a semi-generic coarse-grained model that can map more specifically to polymers and copolymers with different chain architectures, component glass transition temperatures, and ion solvation behaviors. We set most parameters with basic homopolymer data such as glass transition temperatures, Kuhn length, density, and dielectric constant, with further adjustment based on data from the polymer electrolyte system. We specifically model polystyrene-block-poly(oligo-oxyethylene methyl ether methacrylate) (PS-b-POEM) with lithium triflate salt, considering the POEM to be made of a poly(methylmethacrylate) backbone with poly(ethylene oxide) side chains. Solvation of ions is accounted for by additional polymer-ion interactions of the form -S/r4, plus additional lithium-polymer Lennard-Jones interactions. We find these potentials have different effects and discuss strategies for setting these parameters.

Data-Driven Generic Turbines for Distributed Wind Modeling, Optimization, and Economic Studies

As distributed energy resources (DER) become less expensive and more popular, utilities, project developers, and customers have an increasing need to model the performance of existing and proposed DER systems. Distributed wind has been shown to have widespread economic potential but is often represented by a simplified model in - or excluded from - DER modeling tools and studies. There is often no economic imperative to extend models and studies to give full consideration to distributed wind. We present a set of data-driven generic turbines derived from 16 years of annual distributed wind market survey data. The proposed methodology can be used to derive generic turbines from separate or updated data sets. Finally, a mixed-integer linear programming approach to optimal distributed wind project sizing is used to demonstrate the generic turbine models. Combined, these models and methods can reduce barriers to considering distributed wind in modeling tools and studies.

A Predictive Model for Survival of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Generic E. coli in Soil Amended with Untreated Animal Manure

Abstract This study aimed at developing a predictive model that captures the influences of a variety of agricultural and environmental variables and is able to predict the concentrations of enteric bacteria in soil amended with untreated Biological Soil Amendments of Animal Origin (BSAAO) under dynamic conditions. We developed and validated a Random Forest model using data from a longitudinal field study conducted in mid‐Atlantic United States investigating the survival of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and generic E. coli in soils amended with untreated dairy manure, horse manure, or poultry litter. Amendment type, days of rain since the previous sampling day, and soil moisture content were identified as the most influential agricultural and environmental variables impacting concentrations of viable E. coli O157:H7 and generic E. coli recovered from amended soils. Our model results also indicated that E. coli O157:H7 and generic E. coli declined at similar rates in amended soils under dynamic field conditions. The Random Forest model accurately predicted changes in viable E. coli concentrations over time under different agricultural and environmental conditions. Our model also accurately characterized the variability of E. coli concentration in amended soil over time by providing upper and lower prediction bound estimates. Cross‐validation results indicated that our model can be potentially generalized to other geographic regions and incorporated into a risk assessment for evaluating the risks associated with application of untreated BSAAO. Our model can be validated for other regions and predictive performance also can be enhanced when data sets from additional geographic regions become available.

Material Control & Accounting Modeling Developments for a Generic TRISO Fuel Fabrication Facility

The Material Protection, Accounting, and Control Technologies (MPACT) program utilizes modeling and simulation to assess Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) concerns for a variety of nuclear facilities. The Sandia National Laboratories (SNL)-developed Fissile Facility Flow Modeler (F3M) and the Material Accountancy Performance Indicator Toolkit (MAPIT) have historically provided MPACT with the capability to analyze MC&A approaches for nuclear facilities to determine that these facilities meet regulatory requirements. In FY25, improvements on the application of the F3M and MAPIT tools to simulate a generic TRi-structural ISOtropic (TRISO) fuel fabrication facility were successfully completed. The generic TRISO fuel fabrication F3M model captures the entire TRISO fuel fabrication process and is adaptable to any final TRISO fuel form, including spherical pebbles and cylindrical compacts loaded into graphite prismatic blocks. Comprehensive F3M/MAPIT functionality for the generic TRISO fuel fabrication model has been demonstrated. This modeling framework can be applied to support the U.S. Department of Energy and domestic nuclear industry stakeholders in developing MC&A approaches for advanced fuel fabrication facilities via statistical tests that demonstrate compliance to regulatory requirements.
