Optical emissivity dataset of multi-material heterogeneous designs generated with automated figure extraction

Optical device design is typically an iterative optimization process based on a good initial guess from prior reports. Optical properties databases are useful in this process but difficult to compile because their parsing requires finding relevant papers and manually converting graphical emissivity curves to data tables. Here, we present two contributions: one is a dataset of thermal emissivity records with design-related parameters, and the other is a software tool for automated colored curve data extraction from scientific plots. We manually collected 64 papers with 176 figures reporting thermal emissivity and automatically retrieved 153 colored curve data records. The automated figure analysis software pipeline uses Faster R-CNN for axes and legend object detection, EasyOCR for axes numbering recognition, and k-means clustering for colored curve retrieval. Additionally, we manually extracted geometry, materials, and method information from the text to add necessary metadata to each emissivity curve. Finally, we analyzed the dataset to determine the dominant classes of emissivity curves and determine the underlying design parameters leading to a type of emissivity profile.

Generative design of de novo proteins based on secondary-structure constraints using an attention-based diffusion model

We report two generative deep-learning models that predict amino acid sequences and 3D protein structures on the basis of secondary-structure design objectives via either the overall content or the per-residue structure. Both models are robust regarding imperfect inputs and offer de novo design capacity because they can discover new protein sequences not yet discovered from natural mechanisms or systems. The residue-level secondary-structure design model generally yields higher accuracy and more diverse sequences. These findings suggest unexplored opportunities for protein designs and functional outcomes within the vast amino acid sequences beyond known proteins. Our models, based on an attention-based diffusion model and trained on a dataset extracted from experimentally known 3D protein structures, offer numerous downstream applications in the conditional generative design of various biological or engineering systems. Future work could include additional conditioning and an exploration of other functional properties of the generated proteins for various properties beyond structural objectives.

Thermal Analysis and Testing of Fastrac Gas Generator Design

The Fastrac Engine is being developed by the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to help meet the goal of substantially reducing the cost of access to space. This engine relies on a simple gas-generator cycle, which burns a small amount of RP-1 and oxygen to provide gas to drive the turbine and then exhausts the spent fuel. The Fastrac program envisions a combination of analysis, design and hot-fire evaluation testing. This paper provides the supporting thermal analysis of the gas generator design. In order to ensure that the design objectives were met, the evaluation tests have started on a component level and a total of 15 tests of different durations were completed to date at MSFC. The correlated thermal model results will also be compared against hot-fire thermocouple data gathered.

Percy Thomas wind generator designs

The technical and economic feasibilities of constructing a windpowered generator with a capacity of 2,000 to 4,000 kilowatt are considered. Possible benefits of an integrated wind generating electric energy source in an electric utility network are elaborated. Applications of a windpowered waterpump, including its use as a pumping source for hydroelectric pump storage operations, are also mentioned. It is concluded that the greatest potential of the wind generator is to generate heat directly and not conversion to electricity and then to heat.

Second-Generation Design of Micro-Spec: A Medium-Resolution, Submillimeter-Wavelength Spectrometer-on-a-Chip

Micro-Spec (μ-Spec) is a direct-detection spectrometer which integrates all the components of a diffraction-grating spectrometer onto a ∼10-cm2 chip through the use of superconducting microstrip transmission lines on a single-crystal silicon substrate. A second-generation μ-Spec is being designed to operate with a spectral resolution of 512 in the submillimeter (500-1000 μm, 300-600 GHz) wavelength range, a band of interest for several spectroscopic applications in astrophysics. High altitude balloon missions would provide the first test bed to demonstrate the μ-Spec technology in a space-like environment and would be an economically viable venue for multiple observation campaigns. This work reports on the current status of the instrument design and will provide a brief overview of each instrument subsystem. Particular emphasis will be given to the design of the spectrometer's two-dimensional diffractive region, through which the light of different wavelengths is focused on the detectors along the focal plane. An optimization process is employed to generate geometrical configurations of the diffractive region that satisfy specific requirements on spectrometer size, operating spectral range, and performance. An optical design optimized for balloon missions will be presented in terms of geometric layout, spectral purity, and efficiency.

Design, Generation and Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA) of Asymmetric Face Gear Drive With Modified Geometry

A new type of face gear drive for application in transmissions, particularly in helicopters, has been developed. The new geometry differs from the existing geometry by application of asymmetric profiles and double-crowned pinion of the face gear mesh. The paper describes the computerized design, simulation of meshing and contact, and stress analysis by finite element method. Special purpose computer codes have been developed to conduct the analysis. The analysis of this new type of face gear is illustrated with a numerical example.

An additively-manufactured molten salt-to-supercritical carbon di-oxide primary heat exchanger for solar thermal power generation – Design and techno-economic performance

The design and techno-economic performance of a compact additively manufactured (AM) molten salt (MS)-to-supercritical carbon di-oxide (sCO2) primary heat exchanger (PHE) for solar thermal application is described. The PHE design consists of sCO2 flow through an array of microscale pin fins while the MS flows through mm-scale rectangular channels. Constraints imposed by AM using laser powder bed fusion method are considered in the design. Structural and fluid flow simulations are performed to arrive at a viable design of the core and headers. A simplified one-dimensional steady state model for the PHE is developed including the impact of surface roughness from the AM process. A process-based cost model is used to determine the tradeoff between thermofluidic design and manufacturing cost. A parametric study is performed using the thermo-fluidic and cost models to determine the set of geometrical and flow variables that result in high power density and low cost, while restricting the pressure drop on the sCO2 side to less than 2% of line pressure. Flow rates of MS and sCO2 were varied over heat capacity rate ratios ranging from 0.2 to 1. Results indicate that it is possible to design a low-pressure drop AM PHE with an effectiveness of 90% and a power density in excess of 10 MW/m3 (including headers). Fabrication of representative nickel superalloy specimens are shown to demonstrate that low-porosity parts with the requisite dimensional tolerance of PHE core can be generated.
