Absolute calibration and atmospheric versus mineralogic origin of absorption features in 2.0 to 2.5 micron Mars spectra obtained during 1993

We obtained new high resolution reflectance spectra of Mars during the 1993 opposition from Mauna Kea Observatory using the UKIRT CGS4 spectrometer. Fifty spectra of 1600-2000 km surface regions and a number of standard star spectra were obtained in the 2.04 to 2.44 micron wavelength region on 4 February 1993 UT. Near-simultaneous observations of bright standard stars were used to perform terrestrial atmospheric corrections and an absolute flux calibration. Using the known magnitude of the stars and assuming blackbody continuum behavior, the flux from Mars could be derived. A radiative transfer model and the HITRAN spectral line data base were used to compute atmospheric transmission spectra for Mars and the Earth in order to simulate the contributions of these atmospheres to our observed data. Also, we examined the ATMOS solar spectrum in the near-IR to try to identify absorption features in the spectrum of the Sun that could be misinterpreted as Mars features. Eleven absorption features were detected in our Mars spectra. Our data provide no conclusive identification of the mineralogy responsible for the absorption features we detected. However, examination of terrestrial spectral libraries and previous high spectral resolution mineral studies indicates that the most likely origin of these features is either CO3(sup 2-), HCO3(-), or HSO4(-) anions in framework silicates or possibly (Fe, Mg)-OH bonds in sheet silicates.

Experimental Constraints on the Stability of Clinopyroxene (+) Magnesite in Iron Bearing Planetary Mantles: Implications for Nakhlite Formation

Carbon is present in various forms in the Earth s upper mantle (carbonate- or diamond-bearing mantle xenoliths, carbonatite magmas, CO2 emissions from volcanoes...). Moreover, there is enough carbon in chondritic material to stabilize carbonates into the mantles of Mars or Venus as well as in the Earth. However, the interactions with iron have to be constrained, because Fe is commonly thought to buffer oxygen fugacity into planetary mantles. [1] and [2] show evidences of the stability of clinopyroxene Ca(Mg,Fe)Si2O6 + magnesite (Mg,Fe)CO3 in the Earth s mantle around 6GPa (about 180km). The stability of oxidized forms of carbon (like magnesite) depends on the oxygen fugacity of the system. In the Earth s mantle, the maximum carbon content is 10000 ppm [3]. The fO2 parameter varies vertically as a function of pressure, but also laterally because of geodynamic processes like subduction. Thus, carbonates, graphite, diamond, C-rich gases and melts are all stable forms of carbon in the Earth s mantle. [4] show that the fO2 variations observed in SNC meteorites can be explained by polybaric graphite-CO-CO2 equilibria in the Martian mantle. [5] inferred from thermodynamic calculations that the stable form of carbon in the source regions of the Martian basalts should be graphite (and/or diamond). After [6], a metasomatizing agent like a CO2-rich melt may infiltrate the mantle source of nakhlites. However, according to [7] and [8], the FeO wt% value in the Martian bulk mantle is more than twice that of the Earth s mantle (KLB-1 composition by [9]). As iron and carbon are two elements with various oxidation states, Fe/C interaction mechanisms must be considered.

Silicate coprecipitation reduces green rust crystal size and limits dissolution-precipitation during air oxidation

Green rusts (GR) are mixed-valence iron (Fe) hydroxides which form in reducing redox environments like riparian and wetland soils and shallow groundwater. In these environments, silicon (Si) can influence Fe oxides’ chemical and physical properties but its role in GR formation and subsequent oxidative transformation have not been studied starting at initial nucleation. Green rust sulfate [GR(SO 4 )] and green rust carbonate [GR(CO 3 )] were both coprecipitated from salts by base titration in increasing % mol Si (0, 1, 10, and 50). The minerals were characterized before and after rapid (24 h) aqueous air-oxidation by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fe extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS), and N 2 -BET surface area. Results showed that only GR(SO4) or GR(CO3) was formed at every tested Si concentration. Increasing % mol Si caused decreased plate size and increased surface area in GR(CO3) but not GR(SO4). GR plate basal thickness was not changed at any condition indicating a lack of Si interlayering. Air oxidation of GR(SO4) at all % mol Si contents transformed by dissolution and reprecipitation into lepidocrocite and goethite, favoring ferrihydrite with higher % Si content. Air oxidation of GR(CO3) transformed into magnetite and goethite but increasing Si caused GR to oxidize while retaining its hexagonal plate structure via solid-state oxidation. Our results indicate that Si has the potential to cause GR to form in smaller particles and upon air oxidation, Si can either stabilize the plate structure or alter transformation to ferrihydrite.
