Fail-Safe Magnetic Bearing Controller Demonstrated Successfully

The Structural Mechanics and Dynamics Branch has successfully demonstrated a fail-safe controller for the Fault-Tolerant Magnetic Bearing rig at the NASA Glenn Research Center. The rotor is supported by two 8-pole redundant radial bearings, and coil failing situations are simulated by manually shutting down their control current commands from the controller cockpit. The effectiveness of the controller was demonstrated when only two active coils from each radial bearing could be used (that is, 14 coils failed). These remaining two coils still levitated the rotor and spun it without losing stability or desired position up to the maximum allowable speed of 20,000 rpm.

(abstract) The Design of a Benign Fail-safe Mechanism Using a Low-melting-point Metal Alloy Coupler

Because the alpha proton X ray spectrometer (APXS) sensor head on the Mars Pathfinder rover, Sojourner, is placed on Martian soil by the deployment mechanism (ADM), the rover would be crippled if the actuator fails when the mechanism is in its deployed position, as rover ground clearance is then reduced to zero. This paper describes the unique fail-safe mounted on the ADM, especially the use of a low-temperature-melting alloy as a coupler device. The final form of the design is a low-melting-point metal pellet coupler, made from Cerrobend, in parallel with a Negator spring pack. In its solid state, the metal rigidly connects the driver (the actuator) and the driven part (the mechanism). When commanded, a strip heater wrapped around the coupler melts the metal pellet (at 60(deg)C), allowing the driven part to turn independent of the driver. The Negator spring retracts the mechanism to its fully stowed position. This concept meets all the design criteria, and provides an added benefit. When the metal hardens the coupler once again rigidly connects the actuator and the mechanism. The concept presented here can easily be applied to other applications. Anywhere release devices are needed, low-melting-point couplers can be considered. The issues to be concerned with are thermal isolation, proper setting of the parts before actuation, and possible outgassing concerns. However, when these issues are overcome, the resulting release mechanism can promise to be the most light, simple, power conserving alternative available.

Active Fail-Safe Micro-Array Flow Control for Advanced Embedded Propulsion Systems

The primary objective of this research effort was to develop and analytically demonstrate enhanced first generation active "fail-safe" hybrid flow-control techniques to simultaneously manage the boundary layer on the vehicle fore-body and to control the secondary flow generated within modern serpentine or embedded inlet S-duct configurations. The enhanced first-generation technique focused on both micro-vanes and micro-ramps highly-integrated with micro -jets to provide nonlinear augmentation for the "strength' or effectiveness of highly-integrated flow control systems. The study focused on the micro -jet mass flow ratio (Wjet/Waip) range from 0.10 to 0.30 percent and jet total pressure ratios (Pjet/Po) from 1.0 to 3.0. The engine bleed airflow range under study represents about a 10 fold decrease in micro -jet airflow than previously required. Therefore, by pre-conditioning, or injecting a very small amount of high-pressure jet flow into the vortex generated by the micro-vane and/or micro-ramp, active flow control is achieved and substantial augmentation of the controlling flow is realized.

Improved Quick Disconnect (QD) Interface Through Fail Safe Parts Identification

An extensive review of existing Quick Disconnects (QDs) mating and demating operations was performed to determine which shuttle part interface identifications and procedures contribute to human factor errors. The research methods used consisted of interviews with engineers and technicians, examination of incident reports, critiques of video and audio tapes of QD operations, and attendance of a Hyper QD operational course. The data strongly suggests that there are inherit human factor errors involved in QD operations. To promote fail-safe operations, QD interface problem areas and recommendations were outlined and reviewed. It is suggested that dialogue, investigations and recommendations continue.

Iron-Only and Vanadium Nitrogenases: Fail-Safe Enzymes or Something More?

The enzyme molybdenum nitrogenase converts atmospheric nitrogen gas to ammonia and is of critical importance for the cycling of nitrogen in the biosphere and for the sustainability of life. Alternative vanadium and iron-only nitrogenases that are homologous to molybdenum nitrogenases are also found in archaea and bacteria, but they have a different transition metal, either vanadium or iron, at their active sites. So far alternative nitrogenases have only been found in microbes that also have molybdenum nitrogenase. They are less widespread than molybdenum nitrogenase in bacteria and archaea, and they are less efficient. The presumption has been that alternative nitrogenases are fail-safe enzymes that are used in situations where molybdenum is limiting. Recent work indicates that vanadium nitrogenase may play a role in the global biological nitrogen cycle and iron-only nitrogenase may contribute products that shape microbial community interactions in nature.

Evolution of the IEEE P7009 Standard: Towards Fail-Safe Design of Autonomous Systems

Autonomous systems are complex, diverse, and likely be used in environments that change unpredictably. We must develop mechanisms to cope with failures, potentially caused by both the natural stresses of the operating environment and the system's inadequate environmental models. Failures also arise from system component wear. In 2016, the IEEE launched the Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems in response to the proliferation of increasingly-autonomous systems. A cornerstone of this initiative is the IEEE P7000 series of projects, which set the standards for the future of ethical intelligent and autonomous technologies. This paper describes the ongoing development of the IEEE P7009 standard on “Fail-Safe Design of Autonomous and Semi-Autonomous Systems”. We provide a collective perspective on the ongoing development of IEEE P7009, and outline the objectives, current approaches, issues under discussion, and two exemplar use cases from different sectors: one high-regulation, the other low-regulation.

Dedicated short range communications used as fail-safe in autonomous navigation

Here in this paper, we have analyzed scenarios for leader-follower vehicle convoys that have the potential to be unsafe, hazardous, or even fatal in order to provide insight on dangerous driving conditions for autonomous vehicle platoons. These scenarios were created in a simulation software called Prescan, and are made to reflect the behavior of the vehicle dynamics and sensor characteristics of a real-world vehicle convoy that is currently being tested at the American Center for Mobility (ACM) and sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command - Ground Vehicle Systems Center (U.S. Army CC-DEVCOM) and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The follower vehicle in this study is tested under multiple scenarios, equipped with a Dedicated Short Range vehicle-to-vehicle communication system (DSRC), a radar-based adaptive cruise control system (ACC) and a precision global positioning system (GPS).

Fatigue and fail-safe design features of the DC-10 airplane

The philosophy and methods used in the design of the DC-10 aircraft to assure structural reliability against cracks under repeated service loads are described in detail. The approach consists of three complementary parts: (1) the structure is designed to be fatigue resistant for a crack-free life of 60,000 flight hours; (2) inasmuch as small undetected cracks could develop from other sources, such as material flaws and manufacturing preloads, the structure also is designed to arrest and control cracks within a reasonable service-inspection interval; and (3) a meaningful service-inspection program has been defined on the basis of analysis and test experience from the design development program. This service-inspection program closes the loop to assure the structural integrity of the DC-10 airframe. Selected materials, fasteners, and structural arrangements are used to achieve these design features with minimum structural weight and with economy in manufacturing and maintenance. Extensive analyses and testing were performed to develop and verify the design. The basic design considerations for fatigue-resistant structure are illustrated in terms of material selection, design loads spectra, methods for accurate stress and fatigue damage analysis, and proven concepts for efficient detail design.
