Achieving American Leadership in Cybersecurity and Digital Components Factsheet

The Biden Administration’s efforts to meet 100% clean electricity by 2035 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 has created opportunities to rebuild American supply chains create new jobs, strengthen community engagement, and spur U.S. economic growth. DOE’s strategy for success in the transition to a clean energy economy hinges on building and maintaining technology supply chains that are advanced, secure, and resilient to cyber threats. As the energy sector grows increasingly globalized, complex, and digitized, the supply chain for digital components of energy systems – including software, virtual platforms and services, and data – is facing greater threats. Nearly all digital components of U.S. energy sector systems are vulnerable to cyber supply chain instability, stemming from a variety of causes and shared among a broad set of interdependent stakeholders. Overall, supply chain risks for digital components in energy sector systems will continue to evolve and likely increase as these systems are increasingly interconnected, digitized, and remotely operated.

Technology in Focus: Power-to-X

Power-to-X is the process that converts electricity into energy carriers that can be used in industries and applications not connected to the electricity grid. By creating a product with direct process connected generation, contracted generation, or grid-delivered electricity that is in excess of current demand, production of electricity can be managed to time arbitrage energy and mitigate generation curtailment or inefficient operational reductions. In addition, creating a product potentially develops a secondary revenue stream that aids economics of the facility. This document is a high-level factsheet that provides an overview of what Power-to-X is and what it means.

Life Cycle Emissions Factors for Electricity Generation Technologies

This dataset consists of a table containing the distribution of literature estimates of greenhouse gas emissions for the following electricity generation and storage technologies: biopower, coal, concentrating solar power, geothermal, hydrogen storage, hydropower, lithium-ion battery storage, natural gas, nuclear, ocean, oil, photovoltaic, pumped-storage hydropower, and wind. Quartile estimates of life cycle emissions factors in units of grams of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilowatt hour of generation (g CO2e/kWh) are provided for the following life cycle stages: one-time upstream, ongoing combustion, ongoing non-combustion, one-time downstream, and total. Literature estimates were compiled by the LCA Harmonization study and subsequent updates, as detailed in the factsheet which accompanies this dataset, https://www.nlr.gov/docs/fy21osti/80580.pdf .

Circular Economy Modeling and Analysis

NREL is working to transform the "linear economy" - where materials are simply used and disposed - into a circular one. The linear economy is not only unsustainable and inefficienct, but will ultimately bring us face-to-face with resource limitations. NREL is dedicated to developing a circular economy for energy materials, with recycling, repairing, and reusing in mind. This factsheet describes NREL's core competencies and capabilities, and opportunities for partnership.

Utility Programs Supporting Customer-Sited Battery Storage: Program Design to Ensure Mutual Benefits

Behind-the-meter (BTM) battery storage, when paired with solar, can benefit customers, utilities, and the electric grid. Some utility-sponsored programs have been implemented offset the cost of customer-owned batteries and recognize the value of batteries to the utility and the grid. This factsheet summarizes existing utility-sponsored battery programs and the value to the stakeholders. It then highlights Wattsmart, the customer-owned battery program offered by Rocky Mountain Power in Utah, and provides lessons-learned from a close look at the impact of the program design on commercial customer participation.
