Sensitivity of Spent Fuel Temperatures to Variable Canister Backfills

This report describes thermal modeling done to understand the effects of a hypothetical loss of backfill to a spent fuel storage canister. A NAC MAGNASTOR system was analyzed using STAR-CCM+ and COBRA-SFS at various heat loads, helium pressures, and air environments. When helium was lost later in life the results showed no safety impact to the thermal performance of the cask system and fuel cladding. However, there were other results of interest from this study. The potential to detect helium leaks using external temperature measurement was considered and found to be a potential area for future technology development. The other major result of interest was the significant change in flow velocities with an air environment. This data will be useful in understanding the potential impacts of a breached canister.

High Performing and Durable Pyrophosphate Based Composite Membranes for Intermediate Temperature Fuel Cells [Slides]

Objective: Develop a novel proton conducting electrolyte operating at >200°C with conductivity σ ≥ 100 mScm –1 and RH < 1%. Fabrication of membranes of less than 40μm thickness while retaining high conductivity will result in ASR <0.04 Ωcm 2 . Evaluate membrane durability in terms of crossover, shorting resistance, and open circuit voltage, as well as against temperature cycling. Relevance: Operating FCs in the intermediate temperature range has the potential to greatly reduce cost and simplify water and thermal management. This effort requires novel materials and approaches to meet DOE membrane performance and durability targets. MPP/Polymer composite membranes show promise in early development for application in IT-FCs for transportation applications. Approach: We have demonstrated that both cation dopants and phosphate precursor influence MPP conductivity and identified the most promising MPP compositions for membrane fabrication. The ceramic MPP materials are fabricated as a composite membrane in a 90:10 wt% ratio with Nafion. We have modified our membrane fabrication procedure to improve the density of our membranes. Accomplishments: We demonstrated through-plane membrane conductivity of 95mScm -1 at T > 200°C and RH<0.04bar with a thickness 50μm. We demonstrated FC performance up to 94hrs at 220°C and <1% RH with a 50μm thick membrane exhibiting an OCV of 0.98V and ASR of 0.08 Wcm 2 . Future work: Further decrease in ASR is expected by decreasing the membrane thickness to <40μm. ITPP with higher P:M ratio will be used to increase the conductivity of the starting material. Long term durability will be assessed against DOE technical targets

Editorial for the Virtual Special Issue of Journal of Power Sources “Low temperature fuel cells and electrolysers” - Science and engineering: Let's play this game hand in hand!

Electrochemistry is already and will increasingly be amongst the major drivers of our energetic mix decarbonization, so to fight anthropogenic global warming. The hydrogen economy vector (ideally produced in water electrolysers using renewable electricity and transformed back into electricity in fuel cells), in parallel with the conversion of carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas into value-added products are seen as pillars of the so-called green and sustainable Energy Revolution. The hydrogen technologies presently attract increasing interest, their momentum growing irremediably in Europe, Asia and Americas. Here, this Virtual Special Issue (VSI) gathers the latest scientific results of major research laboratories worldwide, all addressing various aspects of electrochemical energy and material conversion processes.

Energetics of Base–Acid Pairs for the Design of High-Temperature Fuel Cell Polymer Electrolytes

The interaction energy of base–acid plays a key role in acid retention of phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polymer electrolytes under fuel cell operating conditions. Here, we investigate the energetics of proton-accepting and hydroxide-donating organic bases using density functional theory calculations. Because of their weak basicity, proton-accepting organic bases such as benzimidazole have relatively low interaction energy with the acid in the absence of water (15.3–28.0 kcal mol –1 ). Energetics of the proton-accepting base–PA complex increases by adding water, indicating that the interactions in the base–acid complex strengthen in the presence of water. On the other hand, hydroxide-donating organic bases, such as tetramethylammonium hydroxide, have high interaction energy with PA (~110 kcal mol –1 ), which remains high in the presence of water. The chemical shifts of 31P NMR support the energetics of the base–acid complexes. Overall, this study further discusses the benefit of incorporating hydroxide-donating organic bases into the polymeric structure over proton-accepting bases as a way to increase acid retention.

Dual Mode Intermediate Temperature Fuel Cell: Liquid Fuels and Electricity - CRADA 351 (Abstract)

FuelCell Energy, Inc. (FCE) in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), The University of Connecticut (UCONN), The Energy and Environmental Research Center at The University of North Dakota (EERC-UND), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has entered into a co-operative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Project Agency – Energy (ARPA-E), agreement number DE-AR0000503, to develop an electrochemical device for conversion of methane gas to a usable liquid product, such as methanol or formaldehyde. The objective of this CRADA is to develop the anode electro-catalyst for the aforementioned electrochemical cell during Q1-Q8. PNNL will utilize thermodynamic modeling, batch-mode reactor screening and button-scale electrochemical testing to develop this anode."

Proton conducting membranes for high temperature fuel cells with solid state water free membranes

A water free, proton conducting membrane for use in a fuel cell is fabricated as a highly conducting sheet of converted solid state organic amine salt, such as converted acid salt of triethylenediamine with two quaternized tertiary nitrogen atoms, combined with a nanoparticulate oxide and a stable binder combined with the converted solid state organic amine salt to form a polymeric electrolyte membrane. In one embodiment the membrane is derived from triethylenediamine sulfate, hydrogen phosphate or trifiate, an oxoanion with at least one ionizable hydrogen, organic tertiary amine bisulfate, polymeric quaternized amine bisulfate or phosphate, or polymeric organic compounds with quaternizable nitrogen combined with Nafion to form an intimate network with ionic interactions.
