Nb$_{3}$Sn 11 T Dipole for the High Luminosity LHC (FNAL). Chapter 8

This chapter describes the design and parameters of the 11 T dipole developed at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) in collaboration with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for the High Luminosity LHC project, and presents details of the single-aperture and twin-aperture dipole models that were constructed and tested. Magnet test results including magnet quench performance, magnetic measurements, and quench protection studies performed using the dipole mirror and single-aperture and twin-aperture dipole models are summarized and discussed.

Workshop on a future muon program at FNAL

The Snowmass report on rare processes and precision measurements recommended Mu2e-II and a next generation muon facility at Fermilab (Advanced Muon Facility) as priorities for the frontier. The Workshop on a future muon program at FNAL was held in March 2023 to discuss design studies for Mu2e-II, organizing efforts for the next generation muon facility, and identify synergies with other efforts (e.g., muon collider). Topics included high-power targetry, status of R&D for Mu2e-II, development of compressor rings, FFA and concepts for muon experiments (conversion, decays, muonium and other opportunities) at AMF. This document summarizes the workshop discussions with a focus on future R&D tasks needed to realize these concepts.

Design and implementation of the cosmic ray tagger system for the ICARUS detector at FNAL

The ICARUS-T600 Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber is operating at Fermilab at shallow depth and thus exposed to a high flux of cosmic rays that can fake neutrino interactions. A cosmic ray tagging (CRT) system (∼ 1100 m 2 ), surrounding the cryostat with two layers of fiber embedded plastic scintillators, was developed to mitigate the cosmic ray induced background. Using nanosecond-level timing information, the CRT can distinguish incoming cosmic rays from outgoing particles from neutrino interactions in the TPC. In this paper an overview of the CRT system, its installation and commissioning at Fermilab, and its performance are discussed.

Third-Order Resonance Compensation at the FNAL Recycler Ring

The Recycler Ring (RR) at the Fermilab Accelerator Complex performs slip-stacking on 8 GeV protons, doubling the beam intensity delivered to the Main Injector (MI). At MI, the beam is accelerated to 120 GeV and delivered to the high energy neutrino experiments. Femilab’s Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) will require the Recycler to store 50% more beam. Simulations have shown that the space charge tune shift at this new intensity will lead to the excitation of multiple resonance lines. Specifically, this study looks at normal sextupole lines 3 Q_{x}=76 and Q_{x}+2Q_{y}=74, plus skew sextupole lines 3 Q_{y}=73 and 2 Q_{x}+Q_{y}=75. Dedicated normal and skew sextupoles have been installed in order to compensate for these resonance lines. By measuring and calculating the Resonance Driving Terms (RDT), this study shows how each of the resonance lines can be compensated independently. Furthermore, this study shows and discusses initial investigations into compensating multiple lines simultaneously.

Simultaneous Compensation of Third-Order Resonances at the FNAL Recycler Ring

Third-order resonance lines will have a detrimental effect on the high-intensity operation of the Recycler Ring (RR), under the current Proton Improvement Plan (PIP-II) for the Fermilab Accelerator Complex. Increasing intensity will increase space charge effects, leading to the excitation of normal and skew sextupole lines. Dedicated normal and skew sextupoles have been installed in order to mitigate the effect of these resonance lines. By measuring the response matrix of the third-order Resonance Driving Terms (RDTs) to the currents of these dedicated elements, this study shows how several resonance lines can be compensated simultaneously. Resonance compensation is experimentally verified through loss maps and emittance growth measurements using the Ion Profile Monitor (IPM) system in the Recycler.

Iron Based Superconductors at FNAL: Ultra High-Field Superconductor at Low-Cost

The high energy physics community has been asking for a strong push towards the energy frontier beyond the LHC. Unfortunately, large rings are very expensive and with the current state-of-the-art magnet technology(NbTi, Nb 3 Sn and Cuprates),the costs are prohibitive. An emerging technology that has a great potential to provide low-cost conductor with ultra-high-field performance(>20T)is based on a new class of HTS materials discovered in 2008:Iron-Based-Superconductors (IBSs or pnictides). In view of future High Field Magnet(HFM) applications, this project is intended to the development of inexpensive high-T c Iron-Based-Superconductor (IBS) wire with high critical current density(J c > 10 5 A/cm 2 at > 20T/4.2K).

Transportation Fatigue Testing of the pHB650 Power Coupler Antenna for PIP-II at FNAL

The PIP-II Project will see international shipment of cryomodules Proton Improvement Plan-II from Europe to the United States, and as such, the shocks which can occur during shipment pose a risk to the internal components. Of particular concern is the coupler ceramic window and surrounding brazes, which will see stresses during an excitation event. Since the antenna design is new, and because of the setback failure would create, a cyclic stress test was devised for the antenna. This paper presents the experimental methods, setup, and results of the test.
