Simple BCD circuit accurately counts to 24

Ripple-through counter with divide-by-24 output pulse is used in digital control clocks to register hours and give a daily output signal. It uses commercially available digital modules that incorporate and/gates with flip-flops.

Spafford, M. L.

Simple pulse counting circuit computes sum of squares

Pulse counting circuit with an extra chain of flip-flops, delay lines, and gates computes the sum of the squares of the pulse sequences. A pulse train and the sum of the squares of the pulses are simultaneously completed.

Schaefer, D. H.

Simple circuit performs binary addition and subtraction

Ripple adder reduces the number of logic circuits required to preform binary addition and subtraction. The adder uses dual input and delayed output flip-flops in one register. The contents of this register are summed with those of a standard register through conventional AND/gates.

FET comparator detects analog signal levels without loading analog device

FET comparator circuit detects discrete analog computer output levels without excessively loading the output amplifier of the computer. An FET common source amplifier is coupled by a differential amplifier to a bistable transistor flip-flop. This circuit provides a digital output for analog voltages above or below a predetermined level.

Pneumatic binary encoder replaces multiple solenoid system

Pneumatic binary encoder replaces solenoid system in the pilot stage of a digital actuator. The encoder operates in flip-flop manner to valve gas at either high or low pressures. By rotating the disk in a pinion-to-encoding gear ratio, six to eight adder circuits may be operated from single encoder.

Self-correcting, synchronizing ring counter using integrated circuit devices

Three nand gate circuits are used to add error detection and reset logic circuitry for initiating and retaining the correct binary state in the flip-flop circuits of a ring counter. As the input signals are counted, the position of the specified state moves in ordered sequence around circuit loop.

Maasberg, W. A.

Pental circuit may be used in conversionless decimal counter

Pental counter circuit, a five-stage ring of NOR gates, is used with a standard flip-flop and several AND gates to construct a decimal counter. Pental circuit eliminates the conversion circuitry which is used when binary circuits generate numeric information.

Digital telemetry system eliminates data redundancy

Floating aperature, zero-order predictor /ZOP/ circuit eliminates telemetered data redundancy by examining data from each sensor before it is multiplexed and transmitted. Digital devices to implement design are off-the-shelf items such as gates, registers and flip-flops, which are readily amenable to large-scale integration techniques.

Hymer, R. L.

A simplified, compact static shift register

Shift register was developed which uses only one D type flip-flop and improves packaging density by approximately 25% over the usual arrangement. Circuit is compromise between full master-slave arrangement and dynamic shift register, with limitation only of length of time that clock can be held high during new data entry.

A low power X-ray diffractometer for soil analysis in remote locations employing a multiwire proportional counter detector array.

A low power X-ray powder diffraction system suitable for remote mineralogical analysis of lunar, planetary, or asteroid soils has been designed. A one Curie Fe-55 source provides a monochromatic X-ray beam of 5.9 keV. Seeman-Bohlin focusing geometry is employed in the camera, allowing peak detection to proceed simultaneously at all angles and obviating the need for moving parts. The detector system is an array of 500-600 proportional counters with a wire-spacing of 1 mm. An electronics unit comprising preamplifier, postamplifier, window discriminators, and storage flip-flops requiring only 3.5 milliwatts has been designed and tested. Total instrument power is less than 5 W.

Feedback in sequential machine realizations.

A method is described for determining the realizability of a sequential machine with trigger or set-reset flip-flop memory elements when the feedback of the machine is given by a Boolean function. Feedbacks in several types of sequential machines with different memory elements are compared, showing the memory specifications allowing the realization of such machines.

Digital random-number generator

For binary digit array of N bits, use N noise sources to feed N nonlinear operators; each flip-flop in digit array is set by nonlinear operator to reflect whether amplitude of generator which feeds it is above or below mean value of generated noise. Fixed-point uniform distribution random number generation method can also be used to generate random numbers with other than uniform distribution.

Brocker, D. H.

Frequency control circuit for all-digital phase-lock loops

Phase-lock loop references all its operations to fixed high-frequency service clock operating at highest speed which digital circuits permit. Wide-range control circuit provides linear control of frequency of reference signal. It requires only two counters in combination with control circuit consisting only of flip-flop and gate.

Anderson, T. O.

Versatile electronic load

Variable load has very fast response under wide range of simulated dynamic operating conditions, and can accept inputs up to 1000 watts. Many types of signals may be applied to load. Variable pulse generator and flip-flop produce rectangular waveform. Other signals include steady state step and single pulse.

Development of ferrite logic devices for an arithmetic processor

A number of fundamentally ultra-reliable, all-magnetic logic circuits are developed using as a basis a single element ferrite structure wired as a logic delay element. By making minor additions or changes to the basic wiring pattern of the delay element other logic functions such as OR, AND, NEGATION, MAJORITY, EXCLUSIVE-OR, and FAN-OUT are developed. These logic functions are then used in the design of a full-adder, a set/reset flip-flop, and an edge detector. As a demonstration of the utility of all the developed devices, an 8-bit, all-magnetic, logic arithmetic unit capable of controlled addition, subtraction, and multiplication is designed. A new basic ferrite logic element and associated complementary logic scheme with the potential of improved performance is also described. Finally, an improved batch process for fabricating joint-free power drive and logic interconnect conductors for this basic class of all-magnetic logic is presented.
