Improved Fermion Hamiltonians for Quantum Simulation

The Symanzik improvement program has been quite successful in classical simulations of quantum chromodynamics allowing calculations to be performed at coarser lattice spacings and with reduced computational resource costs. It is expected that improved Hamiltonians will be essential to simulate lattice field theories using quantum computers. In this work I will discuss the formulation of an ASQTAD and HISQ Hamiltonian amenable for quantum simulations. I will also show preliminary results that demonstrate significant tree-level contributions are removed in the spectrum of the 1 flavor Schwinger model.

Cosmic matter-antimatter asymmetry and gravitational force

Cosmic matter-antimatter asymmetry due to the gravitational interaction alone is discussed, considering the gravitational coupling of fermion matter related to the Yang-Mills (1954) gauge symmetry with the unique generalization of the four-dimensional Poincare group. Attention is given to the case of weak static fields which determines the space-time metric where only large source terms are retained. In addition, considering lowest-order Feynman diagrams, there are presented gravitational potential energies between fermions, between antifermions, and between a fermion and an antifermion. It is concluded that the gravitational force between matter is different from that between antimatter; implications from this concerning the evolution of the universe are discussed.

Boson localization and universality in YBa2Cu(3-x)M(x)O(7-delta)

We consider a two component mixture of charged fermions on neutralizing background with all sign combinations and arbitrarily small mass ratios. In the two impurity limit for the heavier component we show that the pair forms a bound state for all charge combinations. In the lowest order approximation we derive a closed form expression Veff(r) for the binding potential which has short-range repulsion followed by attraction. In the classical limit, when the mass of embedded particles is large m2 much greater than m, we can calculate from Veff(r) also the cohesive energy E and the bond length R of a metallic crystal such as lithium. The lowest order result is R = 3.1 A, E = -0.9 eV, not entirely different from the experimental result for lithium metal. The same interaction for two holes on a parabolic band with m2 greater than m gives the quantum mechanical bound state which one may interpret as a boson or local pair in the case of high-Te and heavy fermion superconductors. We also show that for compounds of the type YBa2Cu(3 - x)M(x)O(7 - delta) one can understand most of the experimental results for the superconducting and normal states with a single temperature dependent boson breaking function f(T) for each impurity content x governing the decay of bosons into pairing fermions. In the normal state f(T) turns out to be a linear, universal function, independent of the impurity content I and the oxygen content delta. We predict with universality a depression in Tc(x) with slight down bending in agreement with experiment. As a natural consequence of the model the bosons become localized slightly above Tc due to the Wigner crystallization, enhanced with lattice local field minima. The holes remain delocalized with a linearly increasing concentration in the normal state, thus explaining the rising Hall density. The boson localization temperature T(sub BL) shows up as a minimum in the Hall density R(sub ab)(exp -1). We also give explanation for very recently observed scaling of temperature dependent Hall effect in La(2 - x)Sr(x)CuO4.

Gravitational matter-antimatter asymmetry and four-dimensional Yang-Mills gauge symmetry

A formulation of gravity based on the maximum four-dimensional Yang-Mills gauge symmetry is studied. The theory predicts that the gravitational force inside matter (fermions) is different from that inside antimatter. This difference could lead to the cosmic separation of matter and antimatter in the evolution of the universe. Moreover, a new gravitational long-range spin-force between two fermions is predicted, in addition to the usual Newtonian force. The geometrical foundation of such a gravitational theory is the Riemann-Cartan geometry, in which there is a torsion. The results of the theory for weak fields are consistent with previous experiments.

Decay of long-lived particles in the early universe

It is pointed out that radiative decay of massive fermions can distort the cosmic background radiation. The present investigation is concerned with a study of decay lifetimes in the range from 10 to 100,000 years. Attention is given to the physics involved in determining the effect of radiative decay of massive fermions on observed photon backgrounds. The case of particles which decoupled when the effective number of species in equilibrium was in the range from 50 to 100 is considered, and constraints on particle masses and lifetimes are placed on the basis of observed photon fluxes. This approach provides results with special applications to particles predicted by supersymmetry theories and to right-handed neutrinos. Implications for galaxy formation are also discussed.

A gamma-ray constraint on the nature of dark matter

If even a small component of the Galactic spheroid consists of the weakly interacting majorana fermions that are cold-dark-matter candidate particles for the Galactic halo, there should be a substantial flux of annihilation gamma rays from a source of about 1-deg extent at the Galactic center. COS B observations already constrain the halo cold-dark-matter (CDM) content entrained in the inner spheroid to be less than about 10 percent. A somewhat weaker constraint applies to the CDM believed to be present in the Galactic disk, but still only about 15 percent can be in such particles. Monochromatic line photons of energy 3-10 GeV are also predicted, and future experiments may be capable of improving these limits. Since both theoretical models of galaxy formation in a CDM-dominated universe and mass models for the rotation curve in the inner Galaxy suggest that a substantial fraction of the spheroid component should be nonluminous and incorporate entrained halo CDM, the hypothesis that the halo CDM consists predominantly of weakly interacting fermions such as photinos or heavy majorana mass neutrinos or higgsinos may already be subject to observational test.

Supersymmetric dark matter above the W mass

The cosmological consequences are studied for the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model in the case that the neutralino is heavier than W. The cross section was calculated for annihilation of heavy neutralinos into final states containing gauge and Higgs bosons (XX yields WW, ZZ, HH, HW, HZ), where X is the lightest, nth neutralino and the results are compared with the results with those previously obtained for annihilation into fermions to find the relic cosmological abundance for the most general neutralino. The new channels are particularly important for the Higgsino-like and mixed-state neutralinos, but are sub-dominant (to the fermion-antifermion annihilation channels) in the case that the neutralino is mostly a gaugino. The effect of the top quark mass is also considered. Using these cross sections and the cosmological constraint omega(sub X)h squared is less than or approximately 1, the entire range of cosmologically acceptable supersymmetric parameter space is mapped and a very general bound on the neutralino mass is discovered. For a top quark mass of less than 180 GeV, neutralinos heavier than 3200 GeV are cosmologically inconsistent, and if the top quark mass is less than 120 GeV, the bound is lowered to 2600 GeV. Neutralino states that are mostly gaugino are constrained to be lighter than 550 GeV. It is found that a heavy neutralino that contributes omega(sub X) is approximately 1 arises for a very wide range of model parameters and makes, therefore, a very natural and attractive dark matter candidate.

Synthesis, Structure, and Transport Properties of YbSb2Te4 and YbSb4Te7 for Thermoelectric Applications

Very little work has been done in the Yb-Sb-Te system of compounds. Exploratory synthesis of various compounds in the system has been performed in the search for new thermoelectric materials. The compounds in the system were examined due to the fact that the system is known to act as a concentrated Kondo system, a heavy fermion. Heavy fermions are known to possess high densities of state which are useful in thermoelectric applications. TWO compounds in the system, YbSb2Te4 and YbSb4Te7, have been successfully synthesized in bulk by two methods: low temperature mechanical alloying and high temperature direct synthesis. The Hall mobility, Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity, and thermal conductivity were measured on both the unannealed and annealed compounds up to 550 C to determine the dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT. The results indicate that both compounds make promising candidates for use in thermoelectric devices.

Matter antimatter domains: A possible solution to the CP domain wall problem in the early universe

An SU(5) grand unified theory model is used to show how the degeneracy between vacua with different spontaneously broken charge parity can be dynamically lifted by a condensate of heavy fermion pairs. This drives a phase transition to a unique vacuum state with definite charge parity. The transition eliminates the domain walls in a matter antimatter symmetric domain cosmology.

Four-dimensional symmetry from a broad viewpoint. II Invariant distribution of quantized field oscillators and questions on infinities

The foundation of the quantum field theory is changed by introducing a new universal probability principle into field operators: one single inherent and invariant probability distribution P(/k/) is postulated for boson and fermion field oscillators. This can be accomplished only when one treats the four-dimensional symmetry from a broad viewpoint. Special relativity is too restrictive to allow such a universal probability principle. A radical length, R, appears in physics through the probability distribution P(/k/). The force between two point particles vanishes when their relative distance tends to zero. This appears to be a general property for all forces and resembles the property of asymptotic freedom. The usual infinities in vacuum fluctuations and in local interactions, however complicated they may be, are all removed from quantum field theories. In appendix A a simple finite and unitary theory of unified electroweak interactions is discussed without assuming Higgs scalar bosons.

Solitons in superfluid (He-3)-A - Bound states on domain walls

The effects of solitons on the spectrum of fermion excitations in superfluid (He-3)-A are investigated. It is found that there is a two-dimensional manifold of bound states with energies within the gap of the bulk superfluid. The bound-state spectrum lacks inversion symmetry parallel to the wall.

Friction and particle-hole pairs

The effect induced by dissipation on quantum phenomena has recently been considered, taking into account as a starting point a phenomenological Hamiltonian in which the environment is simulated by an appropriately chosen set of harmonic oscillators. It is found that this approach should be adequate to describe the low-energy behavior of a wide class of environments. The present investigation is concerned with an analysis of the case in which the environment is a gas (or liquid) of fermions, and the relevant low-energy excitations are particle-hole pairs. A study is conducted regarding the extent to which the quantum results obtained for harmonic oscillators are also valid in the considered situation. Linear-response theory is used to derive an effective action which describes the motion of an external particle coupled to a normal Fermi fluid.
