FCC for ALSEP (lunar experiment)

The use of FCC in the ALSEP is discussed. Cable requirements, tradeoffs with round wire, design and development problems are described.

Cripps, G.↗

Military and aerospace applications of FCC

Military and NASA programs are discussed in which FCC were used. Included are Saturn 4, Pegasus satellites solar, array for Skylab orbital workshop, Poseidon missiles, MK 48 torpedo fire control, and Lunar Surveyor.

Multilayer Relaxation and Surface Energies of FCC and BCC Metals Using Equivalent Crystal Theory

The multilayer relaxation of fcc and bcc metal surfaces is calculated using equivalent crystal theory. The results for changes in interplanar spacings of planes close to the surface and the ensuing surface energies are discussed in reference to other theoretical results and compared to available experimental data. The calculation includes high-index surfaces for which no other theoretical results are known.

Seating tool for preparing molded-plug terminations on FCC

Hand-operated tool positions and seats window piece and conductor spacer onto conductors of two stripped cables during process of terminating cables with molded plug. Tool accommodates cables up to 3 in. wide and is used in conjunction with folding tools.

Durability tester for FCC connectors

Testing device monitors continuity and resistance of each circuit, it includes springloaded stationary fixture which holds plug, and moving fixture which is driven by small electric motor and is geared to mate and unmate connector 10 times per minute.

Chambers, C. M.↗

Sprue cutoff tool for molded FCC plugs

Sprue removal operation is accomplished by positioning plug on tool bed, adjusting blades, and moving handle down for cutting process. Blades are raised to remove trimmed plug.

Multiedge slitter for FCC

Tool cuts multiple slits up to 3 in. long between conductors of flat conductor cables up to 3 in. wide to prepare them for termination on terminal boards or in multipin connectors.

Tucker, D. T.↗

Hot-blade stripper for polyester insulation on FCC

Stripper incorporates a blade which is electrically heated to a controlled temperature. Heated blade softens and strips insulation from cable while paper ribbon removes insulation material and keeps blade clean for next operation.

Angele, W.↗

Handling fixture for soldering round wires to FCC

Fixture holds flat conductor cable and wires in position until after soldering of contacting conductor ends and potting of junctions. Device provides for proper spacing of wires and adequate access for soldered joints during fabrication, and positions mold halves during potting operation.

Loggins, R.↗

Rotary stripper for shielded and unshielded FCC

Rotary stripper removes narrow strips of insulation and shielding to any desired depth. Unshielded cables are stripped on both sides with one stroke, shielded cables are stripped in steps of different depths.

Amorphous magnetism in fcc Vicalloy 2

The results of magnetization and Mossbauer experiments are reported which give evidence for superparamagnetism in the quenched face centered cubic (gamma) phase of the ternary system Fe(0.34)C(0.52)V(0.14) (Vicalloy 2). while the magnetization data agree with the limited data of Nesbitt et al., this more complete study shows clearly that this alloy does not acquire long-range ferromagnetic order, nor does it indicate either antiferromagnetic long-range ordering or mictomagnetic behavior, down to 4.2 K. The data can best be described as resulting from ferromagnetic clusters in a weakly magnetic lattice. The Mossbauer data show a slightly broadened single line spectrum of 300 K which broadens with decreasing temperature without development of resolvable hyperfine splitting down to 4.2 K. The broadening is attributed to relaxation effects associated with magnetic cluster coalescence.

Analytical prediction of digital signal crosstalk of FCC

The results are presented of study effort whose aim was the development of accurate means of analyzing and predicting signal cross-talk in multi-wire digital data cables. A complete analytical model is developed n + 1 wire systems of uniform transmission lines with arbitrary linear boundary conditions. In addition, a minimum set of parameter measurements required for the application of the model are presented. Comparisons between cross-talk predicted by this model and actual measured cross-talk are shown for a six conductor ribbon cable.

FCC for homewiring

The application of flat conductor cable technology to surface mounted homewiring was investigated. Baseboard concepts, safety aspects, problems, and advantages are discussed.

Hankins, J. D.↗

FCC in Viking articulated boom

The application requirements and manufacturing techniques for the flat conductor cable used in the Viking Lander Articulated Boom Unit are described. The Viking Boom is a 3-axis device utilized to position a soil sampler and provide digging forces. This application imposed severe restrictions on size, weight, materials, and choice of manufacturing processes. The final cable assembly design resulted in a combination of collated cable and flexible circuits assembled by resistance welding techniques.

Hawkins, E. S.↗

Design, development, fabrication and testing of high temperature Flat Conductor Cable (FCC)

The results are presented of a development program for a flat, 25-conductor signal cable and a flat, 3-conductor power cable. Flat cables employ conductors made of strips or flattened round copper conductors insulated with polyimide films. It is shown that conductor thickness ranges from 0.003 to 0.010 inch, and begins to soften and loose mechanical strength at temperatures above 200 C.

Atomic force microscope studies of fullerene films - Highly stable C60 fcc (311) free surfaces

Atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffractometry were used to study 1500 A-thick films of pure C60 grown by sublimation in ultrahigh vacuum onto a CaF2 (111) substrte. Topographs of the films did not reveal the expected close-packed structures, but they showed instead large regions that correspond to a face-centered cubic (311) surface and distortions of this surface. The open (311) structure may have a relatively low free energy because the low packing density contributes to a high entropy of the exposed surface.

Lattice parameters of fcc binary alloys using a new semiempirical method

A new semiempirical method has been developed to predict the concentration dependence of the heats of formation and lattice parameters of binary alloys consistent with equivalent crystal theory. This method accurately predicts the composition dependence of the lattice parameters both qualitatively and quantitatively. A simple formulation is provided of the algorithm for performing defect calculations.
