All-metal dual frequency RHCP high gain antenna for the extreme environments of a potential Europa Lander

A new all-metal dual-frequency RHCP high gain antenna is under development at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for a potential Europa Lander. The antenna is mainly made of metal so it could survive the harsh environment conditions of Europa (i.e. very low temperature and high radiation and ESD levels). The antenna is flat to meet drastic volume constraints and has efficiencies higher than 80% at both the uplink and downlink X-band Deep Space frequency bands. This antenna is a key component for the potential mission enabling Direct Link to Earth (DTE) without any relying on an Orbiter to relay the data.

Functional Autonomy Challenges in Sampling for an Europa Lander Mission

We present a baseline approach to Functional Autonomyfor the purpose of conducting excavation and samplingbehaviors in a proposed Europa Lander mission. Aspects ofthe problems of site selection, excavation progress tracking, and fault identification are related; with particular emphasison parameters peculiar to an icy moon environment. Firstpass approaches to addressing these challenges are presentedin isolation, while motivating the current development goal ofproducing a general Functional Autonomy architecture thatallows state estimation, fault diagnosis, isolation, & recovery(FDIR), and adaptive behaviors to be formulated in concert.

Radiation tolerance of the PNI RM3100 magnetometer for a Europa lander mission

The results of two radiation test campaigns on a low-cost commercial off-the-shelf magnetometer are presented. The test setup and the total ionization dose (TID) levels studied were designed to meet the requirements of a mission to land on Europa. Based on the Europa Lander Science Definition Team report, instruments inside an aluminum vault at the surface of Europa would need to withstand TID of up to 300 krad(SI). In order to evaluate the performance of the PNI RM3100 magnetometer, nine separate sensors were irradiated at two different facilities during two separate campaigns and under different configurations, including passive and active tests. Of the nine sensors, seven survived the TID of 300 krad(SI) while the other two sensors started presenting failures after reaching 150 krad(SI). Post-irradiation tests showed that eight of the nine sensors continued to work without appreciable degradation after stopping exposure, while one sensor stopped working altogether.

Nonlinear Navigation Analysis for a Europa Lander Mission Concept

Navigation strategies typically use linearized techniques to predict maneuver statistics. This method has been successfully employed on numerous high-energy trajectories, but may not be valid for low-energy ones due to the highly non-linear environment. We explore nonlinear navigational techniques applied to a Europa Lander concept by assessing trajectory sensitivity. The linearity assumption is tested at different phases of the endgame trajectory. Maneuver strategies and placement are considered to improve the delivery to Europa. Several cases of non-linear statistical maneuver Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to optimize maneuvers and compare ∆V statistics against conventional linear simulations.

Exobiological Exploration of Europa (E3) Europa Lander

The search for life outside Earth's protected atmosphere is a compelling testament to the quest by mankind to determine if "we" are alone in the universe. The phenomenal success of the NASA Galileo spacecraft has indicated that the moons of Jupiter, and most notably Europa, may indeed contain subsurface liquid under an icy surface. This speculation of a salty liquid subsurface fuels expert opinions that biological products may exist. The Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts (RASC) effort at Langley Research Center, initiated by NASA Headquarters, pushes NASA and the Aerospace/Science community to target advanced evolutionary technology usage to provide a Europa Lander concept targeted for completion within the next 50 years. The study effort indicates the use of certain advanced technologies to achieve a subsurface penetrator and liquid explorer in the approximately 2040 timeframe.

Compact Low Power Avionics for the Europa Lander Concept and Other Missions to Ocean Worlds

This paper presents the results of NASA’s game-changing technology development entitled “Ultra Low Temperature Electronics” which represents a paradigm shift in spacecraft avionics development. The project has developed compact avionics technologies to address the Command & Data Handling (CDH), Power and Motor Control needs for mission concepts to ocean worlds such as a potential Europa Lander. We addressed this need by developing the key technologies necessary to develop a next generation compact avionics package. The key technologies that we developed significantly reduce the size, weight, power, and cost (SWAP-C) of the avionics package. These technologies will also allow extreme-environment missions to last longer in their environment by reducing the power and energy requirement to keep the avionics warm.

A Model-Based Approach for Europa Lander Mission Concept Exploration

This study investigates the usage of a system model as a means to capture concept formulation for a potentialmission. Efforts are underway at JPL to explore thearchitectural and system concepts for a lander on Europa.Executing a mission on the surface of Europa poses uniquechallenges that will require the lander to operate with onboardautonomy that is more sophisticated than systems previouslyoperated by JPL. Current tasks to explore surface missionconcepts intend to identify concepts that enable a high degree ofonboard autonomy as well as identify the issues and technicallimitations that restrict autonomy. The Europa lander missionconcept team is developing a system model to support thisexploration. The results of this study highlight how executable systemmodeling and the associated engineering environment may beapplied to pre-project conceptual exploration. The applicationof system modeling has resulted in a central system model thatprecisely describes the concepts formulated by the EuropaLander Mission Concept Team. Documentation in the form ofdiagrams and narrative has been directly generated from thesystem model and accessible by team members in a webapplication. The executability of the system model enablesvarious analyses such as simulation of interactions betweencomponents and evaluating system behavior againstrequirements. Execution of the system model has produced statetimelines, plots of system variables, and simulation traces basedon input scenarios. The executable system model enables therapid and repeatable production of these artifacts.

Event-Driven Modeling and Execution of Robotic Activities and Contingencies in the Europa Lander Mission Concept Using BPMN

TRACE (Traceable Robotic Activity Composer and Executive) is a tool designed to address the model-ing, verification, and execution of planned and con-tingent activities during robotic space missions. These activities can be modeled (i.e., planned) graph-ically in TRACE using the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) language. This standardized language is used to model a sequence of robotic ac-tivities tied together by logical constructs, events, and time. TRACE includes verification tools to en-sure feasibility before mission models are executed by TRACE’s executive, which is integrated into the autonomy subsystem via a connector. In this paper, we describe TRACE in detail as it would apply to a conceptual Europa Lander surface mission with planned excavation and sample collection activities, as well as, contingency activities when execution is off-nominal—all highlighting our novel use of BPMN as a lingua franca for the pipeline from mis-sion planning to autonomous execution.

SIIOS in Alaska: Testing an "In-Vault" Option for a Europa Lander Seismometer Experiment

The icy moons of Europa and Enceladus are thought to have global subsurface oceans in contact with mineral-rich silicate interiors, likely providing the three ingredients needed for life as we know it: liquid water, essential chemicals, and a source of energy. The possibility of life forming in their subsurface oceans relies in part on transfer of oxidants from the irradiated ice surface to the sheltered ocean below. Constraining the mechanisms and location of material exchange between the ice surface, the ice shell, and the subsurface ocean, however, is not possible without knowledge of ice thickness and liquid water depths. In a future lander-based experiment seismic measurements will be a key geophysical tool for obtaining this critical knowledge. The Seismometer to Investigate Ice and Ocean Structure (SIIOS) field-tests flight-ready technologies and develops the analytical methods necessary to make a seismic study of Europa and Enceladus a reality. We have been performing small-array seismology with a flight-candidate sensor in analog environments that exploit passive sources. Determining the depth to a subsurface ocean and any intermediate bodies of water is a priority for Ocean Worlds missions as it allows assessment of the habitability of these worlds and provides vital information for evaluating the spacecraft technologies required to access their oceans.

The Implementation of a Motor Simulator for the Development of the Europa Lander Motor Controller

JPL is developing a motor controller capable of controlling the motors required for landed missions on icy worlds such as Europa and Enceladus. To support this effort, JPL, together with Tech180, is developing a motor simulator capable of simulating various types of motors required for these missions and their operation in the ambient environment. This system is being designed to support three 3-phase brushless DC motors with the ability to expanded to 24 motors. The simulator is able to simulate motors with current draw up to 10 amps, and sensors that range from resolvers, hall sensors, and encoders. The motor simulator design utilizes NI components and LabVIEW software, along with high-speed FPGA hardware. This paper will present an overview of our motor controller, the requirements for the motor simulator, and details of its design along with the test results to date.

Europa Lander Trajectory Design Using Lissajous Staging Orbits

Lissajous orbits and approximation of their invariant manifolds are used to generate landing trajectories to the surface of Europa. Each lissajous is discretized into individual revolutions that each resemble a periodic orbit. The unstable manifolds of each individual revolution propagated forward in time generate more surface coverage than manifolds of simple libration point orbits such as halo or Lyapunov orbits. The stable manifolds propagated backwards in time from the individual lissajous revolutions provide direct connections to the last phase of a moon tour. The strategy developed produces ballistic landing trajectories with a wide surface coverage, and allows for the decoupling of the landing and moon tour phase by using the lissajous as an intermediate staging orbit. The multiple revolutions of the lissajous, multiple departure times along each revolution, multiple quasi periodic options at each energy, and multiple energies of the lissajous family provide many degrees of freedom in the design process.
