Spectrally Stabilized Interface Capturing Formulation and Implementation in Nek5000/NekRS

This report documents the formulation of a novel level-set method for incompressible two-phase flows in the continuous Galerkin (CG) high order spectral element framework. The overall method hinges on a novel implementation of the spectral vanishing viscosity (SVV) operator for the stabilization of linear/non-linear hyperbolic problems. The multidimensional SVV convolution kernels, which in essence, have a similar effect as a high pass filter applied to the derivatives, are formulated by exploiting the tensor product form, analogous to the construction of the usual stiffness matrix system. The resulting kernels are directionally decoupled and ensure a linear, symmetric positive definite, elliptic matrix operator. The SVV formulation is demonstrated to provide a robust stabilizing mechanism through challenging linear and non-linear hyperbolic problems, including problems pertinent to the level-set formulation. The two-phase framework conceptualized herein is based on the conservative level-set (CLS) method which represents the interface between the fluids by the 0.5 iso-contour of the smoothed Heaviside function. The CLS method is augmented with a preconditioning procedure for interface normals using the signed distance function which precludes the manifestation of spurious oscillations in the vicinty of the interface. Further, the existing mixed explicit-implicit approach for the solution of Navier-Stokes equations in Nek5000, as described in Tomboulides et al, is augmented with a pressure coefficient splitting approach for the Poisson equation, which greatly accelerated the convergence of pressure solver for two-phase systems with large density ratio. The robustness and accuracy of the overall two-phase method is demonstrated through canonical challenging problems involving high density and viscosity ratios, with and without surface tension. The two-phase formulation is wholly implemented in Nek5000 and the SVV stabilization method is implemented in NekRS, which is the essential precursor to the two-phase framework, undergoing active development.

Design Basis Document / Owner’s Technical Specification for Nitrate Salt Systems in CSP Projects (Final Technical Report)

The number of commercial coal, gas, and nuclear projects built over the past 100 years number in the thousands. As such, there is a large database, available to a wide range of commercial engineering contractors, on proven designs. In essence, unsuccessful designs have, through generations of iterations, been identified and then deleted from further consideration. In contrast, the number of commercial parabolic trough projects using nitrate salt for the thermal storage media is perhaps 60. Further, the number of commercial central receiver projects using nitrate salt as the working fluid is on the order of 20, including estimates for China. Given the relative immaturity of salt technology, and commercial pressures to successfully bid new solar projects into a mature electricity market, solar projects often promise more than has been delivered. The Design Basis Document / Owner’s Technical Specification is a first step in the iteration process. The report describes the successful features of commercial projects, outlines a range equipment and system failures in projects that didn’t operate as intended, and provides a draft set of design changes intended to correct the known problems. The product of the study is 3 volumes of technical material; one volume is on parabolic trough technologies; a second is on central receiver technologies, and the third is on potential design changes to parabolic trough and central receiver projects. The 3 volumes, which total some 590 pages, can be found at https://www.solardynllc.com/csp-plant-technologies. One of the principal topics in the report is the use of functional or prescriptive specifications. Functional specifications describe what the equipment needs to do, consistent with the minimum legal requirements of the local jurisdictions. The details of how this is to be accomplished is developed by the engineering contractor. Prescriptive specifications, which are developed by the Owner, prescribe to the engineering contractor how the functional requirements are to be met. This arrangement ensures that the favorable experience from a previous project is repeated. One example is the design code for the hot salt tank in central receiver projects. The closest design basis is API Standard 650 Welded Steel Tanks for Oil Storage. However, the maximum design temperature in API 650 is 260 °C. As such, solar projects have typically adopted a hybrid Code approach, in which allowable material stresses are taken from ASME Section II Materials. Further, since the tanks experience daily changes in temperature and in (static) pressure, and since portions of the tank can operate at stresses beyond the elastic range, the low cycle fatigue life of the tank is conducted using the rules of Section VIII Division 2. However, in a recent study by NREL, the principal damage mechanism was identified as creep rather than fatigue. Further, design stresses permitted under Section VIII Division 2, corresponding to a fatigue life of 30 years, result in projected creep lifetimes of only 2 to 5 years. An alternate design approach, prescribed by the Owner, would be based on Code sections intended for high temperature service in the creep regime. A candidate is Section III Division 5. Granted, this is a nuclear code section, and it’s use would not likely be mandated by local jurisdictions. However, the effects of creep have been deemed to be of sufficient importance that one nuclear project developer, and one central receiver project developer, have stipulated in the tank design specification that the equipment be designed to the requirements of Section III Division 5.

From Stewardship to Transformation: Toward a Nuclear Enterprise for the 21st Century

The erosion of the global security environment over the last two decades has been rapid and dramatic. It appears also to be accelerating. There are deep and widening concerns in the United States and among its allies and partners that deterrence too has eroded at both the conventional and nuclear levels. The Strategic Posture Commission captured the essence of the problem in its October 2023 report—the United States seeks to meet the challenges of complex multipolar nuclear rivalry in the 21 st century with a slimmed down version of a nuclear deterrent designed in the middle of the 20 th century. With great urgency, the Commission recommended that something more and/or different is needed than simply the replacement of legacy systems with modern variants. But the U.S. nuclear security enterprise was reshaped after the Cold War to support the stockpile stewardship mission—not renewed designed, engineering, and production at scale. It has long fallen short of the agility, flexibility, and adaptiveness periodically asked of it by national leaders. In recent years, however, the message of urgency has been clearly received in the enterprise. Its culture has begun to shift. It has also been received by those in Washington D.C. responsible for funding and guiding the enterprise. The result is an enterprise in transition. Stockpile stewardship has given way to stockpile transformation. Risk aversion is giving way to risk management. Innovation and adaptation have been embraced. Experience to date has yielded some important lessons about what works and what doesn’t in terms of accelerating and delivering the needed innovation and adaptation. It has revealed the enduring character of some challenges. But it has also revealed that a much more agile and effective enterprise is within the national reach—something that will pay important dividends for deterrence, assurance, strategic stability, and peace.

Agent-based Modeling for the Multi-objective Optimization of Energy Production Pathways: Integrated Techno-Economics and Life Cycle Assessment

This project developed an integrated modeling framework to evaluate how purpose-grown bioenergy feedstocks could support large-scale sustainable aviation fuel production in the United States. Led by Colorado State University with project partners, the work combined geographically resolved analysis, techno-economic assessment, life cycle assessment, multi-objective optimization, and agent-based modeling to examine feedstock performance, deployment potential, land-use implications, and adoption dynamics. The overall goal was to identify practical and sustainable pathways for producing aviation fuel from feedstocks such as energy crops, woody crops, oilseeds, and algae while helping inform policy, investment, and research needs tied to national SAF goals. In essence, the project provides a systems-level assessment of the opportunities and constraints associated with scaling bioenergy-based aviation fuels in the U.S.

Digital Twin Enabling Technologies for Online Condition Monitoring of Nuclear Power Plant Components

Online condition monitoring is an area of active research that may enable improved scheduling, maintenance, and safety of nuclear power plant components, reducing unnecessary derate while simultaneously improving operational capacity. Digital twins are one avenue to conduct online condition monitoring and are currently being explored by national laboratories and universities alike. Digital twins for online condition monitoring are, in essence, state concurrent models that emulate a physical process which predicts a parameter and compares it against a measured value. However, digital twins may also provide additional insights by combining and interpreting various sources of information. These insights may be used for preventative maintenance scheduling optimization or early fault detection and are projected to be valuable for meeting requirements under 10 CFR 50.55a. However, digital twin technologies are still under significant development; quantifying model uncertainties, improving unique fault identification, and multimodal sensor fusion are some areas under investigation. Therefore, in this work, we discuss and review the various enabling technologies, in the form of advanced sensors, instrumentation, and modelling methods, that may be used to implement and enhance digital twins for online condition monitoring. A potential use case for pump-motors is presented to demonstrate how these various pieces of enabling digital twin technologies may integrated together for online condition monitoring. Challenges and opportunities associated with the pump-motor digital twin enabling technologies are also identified and discussed.

Importance of Higher Fidelity Model Geometries during Optimization of Critical Experiments

PARADIGM, PARallel Approach of Differential and InteGral Measurements, is a cross-collaborative effort at Los Alamos National Laboratory between nuclear data theorists, differential and integral experimenters, as well as machine learning statisticians to tackle uncertainties in the intermediate region of 239 Pu. In essence, the idea behind PARADIGM is to remove the linear conceptualization of the nuclear data pipeline, shown in Figure 1, and replace it with a far more parallelized approach. The novel approach leverages machine learning to guide which differential measurements and integral experiments will result in the largest decrease in uncertain ties for a nuclide reaction pair in a given energy range. The concept builds off earlier work, EUCLID, which focused on the fast region of 239 Pu. The practical benefit of having evaluation, differential measurement, and integral experiment personnel in collaboration with machine learning is to represent the entire nuclear data in one snapshot. This enable large reduction in the time to deliver improved nuclear data, which using the PARADIGM approach could be done in 3 years. A general outline of PARADIGM and specific topics are available in other papers. The discussion here will pertain directly to the integral experiment design. More specifically, the process of taking a rough design and transforming it into a finalized neutronic model will be discussed.

Gender Mainstreaming in Nuclear Security: Strategies for Incorporating Gender Equality by Design in the IAEA Milestones Approach

Gender mainstreaming has emerged as a critical mechanism towards achieving gender equality in the development and implementation of laws, policies, and programs, including those related to national security. Gender mainstreaming is generally defined as the process of assessing the implications for women and men of any planned action, including legislation, policies, and programs, in all areas and at all levels, with the ultimate goal to achieve gender equality. Gender mainstreaming, which in essence can be thought of as “gender equality by design,” is an important element for building a robust nuclear security infrastructure. To date, however, gender mainstreaming has not been fully operationalized in the nuclear sector. For instance, the IAEA Milestones Approach, which provides important guidance to states seeking to develop nuclear power programs, has not yet incorporated or addressed gender considerations in its various phases or nuclear infrastructure issues, including those related to nuclear security. Therefore, this paper will argue that specifically for nuclear newcomer states, gender mainstreaming could serve as a powerful tool to integrate gender considerations into the design of laws, policies, programs, and entities necessary to successfully implement a nuclear power program. The objective of this study is twofold: first, to explore the concept of gender mainstreaming and its relevance to nuclear security, and second, to identify how gender can be incorporated into the IAEA Milestones Approach. The paper will emphasize the importance of developing guidance for the IAEA and nuclear newcomer states on how gender considerations could be incorporated throughout the development of a nuclear security program.

Feedstock Variability: Differences Among Biomass Anatomical Fractions and Tissues

Corn stover is a versatile feedstock for producing biofuels and other sustainable products. However, its diverse chemical and physical attributes can hinder the processes that convert it into these compounds. The composition of corn stover varies according to factors including corn plant variety, cultivation conditions and maturity at harvest. In essence, corn stover consists of the polymers cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The structural core of plant cell walls consists of elongated chains of glucose molecules arranged in bundles of cellulose. Additionally, lower concentrations of hemicellulose, a complex carbohydrate composed of various sugars, form part of the matrix surrounding cellulose bundles. Lignin is a complex aromatic polymer that reinforces plant cell walls. Corn stover generally comprises 40%-50% cellulose, 20%-30% hemicellulose, and 20%-30% lignin. The ratios of these components vary based on the specific type of corn plant and the growth conditions. For example, corn plants cultivated in drought conditions exhibit higher lignin levels than those grown under optimal conditions. The compositional diversity resulting from growth conditions is most pronounced among the different anatomical fractions of the corn plant. Understanding and accommodating the variation among the anatomical fractions of corn stover can enhance the effective utilization of this resource.
