Cometary ephemerides - needs and concerns

With the use of narrow field-of-view instrumentation on faint comets, the accuracy requirements upon computed ephemerides are increasing. It is not uncommon for instruments with a one arc minute field-of-view to be tracking a faint comet that is not visible without a substantial integration time. As with all ephemerides of solar syste objects, the computed motion and reduction of these observations, the computed motion of a comet is further depenent upon effects related to the comet's activity. Thus, the ephemeris of an active comet is corrupted by both observational errors and errors due to the comet's activity.

Cometary ephemerides for spacecraft flyby missions

The determination of cometary ephemerides is considered with reference to proposed missions to Comet Halley. It is noted that the ability of spacecraft without onboard navigation capability to fly close to target comets is limited chiefly by the comet's ephemeris uncertainty. The situation is complicated by nongravitational forces acting on a comet's nucleus and the paucity of observers currently making astrometric observations of comets. The nongravitational forces affecting Comet Halley are consistent with the rocket effect of an outgassing water ice nucleus; the nucleus is apparently rotating in a direct sense about a stable spin axis. It is emphasized that accurate Comet Halley ephemerides for close spacecraft flybys will require continued efforts to refine the existing nongravitational force model. In addition, the flyby mission to Comet Halley will require a well-organized network of astrometric observers. For this purpose, an Astrometry Network is being set up within NASA's International Halley Watch program.

Satellite ephemerides for the Voyager Uranus encounter

Uranian satellite ephemerides are needed by the Voyager project to support both navigation and acquisition of scientific data. This paper presents the approach being taken to develop the ephemerides and details the initial phase of the development. That phase involves the analytical modeling of the satellites' motion and the adjustment of the model to fit astronomical observations. The paper describes the model and gives the result of a fit to 71 years of observations.

Satellite ephemerides for the Voyager Neptune encounter

This paper presents the results of the latest fits of both analytical theory and numerically integrated Neptunian satellite orbits to Earth-based astrometric observations. Ephemerides based on the integrated orbits will be used by the Voyager project for pre-encounter planning and analysis until late 1988 when the final pre-encounter ephemerides will be produced. As a by-product of the orbit fits, new estimates of the Neptune mass, the second zonal harmonic of Neptune, and the pole orientation of Neptune are obtained. The theory and integrated orbits are compared with each other and with orbits obtained by previous investigators.

A comparison of GPS broadcast and DMA precise ephemerides

We compare the broadcast ephemerides from Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) to the postprocessed ephemerides from the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA). We find significant energy in the spectrum of the residuals at 1 cycle/day and higher multiples. We estimate the time variance of the residuals and show that the short term residuals, from 15 min, exhibit power law processes with greater low frequency perturbations than white phase modulation. We discuss the significance of these results for the performance of the GPS Kalman filter which estimates the broadcast orbits.

Improved ephemerides of Pluto

The history of the Pluto ephemerides created at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is given. The uncertainties of present and possible future ephemerides are illustrated, and it is shown how rapidly the error grows for any present-day ephemeris of Pluto which is extrapolated into the future--tens of thousands of kilometers after only a decade. Continuing the observations into the future not only will reduce the extrapolation time but will provide a substantial improvement to the ephemeris itself.

Galilean Satellite Ephemerides E5

New ephemerides of Jupiter's Galilean Satelites are produced from an analysis of CCD astrometric data, Voyager-mission optical navigation images, mutual event observations, photographic plates, and eclipse timing obeservations.

Subtabulated Lunar and Planetary Ephemerides

In a joint JPL-STL effort the planetary ephemerides have been collected on IBM 704-709 magnetic tape, and a series of routines have been written to utilize these tapes. This paper describes the contents and preparation of the ephemeris tapes.
