Examining Light-Induced Degradation with Combined-Accelerated Stress Testing

While further understanding is sought, the results suggest that a module can show no degradation in performance through a qualification test light soak, (IEC 61215: 2021 MQT 19.1 requirement of 10 kW minimum on one side). Yet, such cells may degrade significantly by LID under conditions within the statistical extremes of the natural environment applied in combined-accelerated stress testing (CAST).

Bifacial Photovoltaic Module Degradation Dynamics

In a comprehensive study conducted at NREL's 75 kW bifacial single-axis-tracked field, accelerated degradation was observed in four out of five bifacial silicon photovoltaic (PV) module technologies when compared to their monofacial counterparts. Root cause analysis of accelerated bifacial degradation involved various analytical tools and techniques. This included employing RdTools to identify rates of power loss, conducting measurements on fielded and control modules using infrared imaging, electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL), quantum efficiency (QE) analysis, IV-curves assessment, as well as utilizing handheld Raman and reflectance measurement targeted at anti-reflective coating. Most cases pointed to carrier lifetime degradation causing Voc loss and simultaneous Isc loss. In some cases, Isc further decreases likely due to optical effects from encapsulant degradation. The outcomes and methodologies employed in this investigation are documented in this publication. This study's significance is further emphasized by placing the findings within the broader context of the performance and degradation of various bifacial systems, as identified in the PV Fleets data.

PV Reliability and Resilience in Challenging Climates

Challenging climates for Photovoltaics are usually based on climate classification. However, extreme weather events such as high wind, flooding, large hail, extreme snow etc. have become more ubiquitous globally. To study the impact of extraordinary weather events on PV reliability we used two of the largest databases in the USA. First, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) database on extreme weather and secondly, the PV Fleet Data Initiative where we have collected high-resolution PV performance data of more than 8 gigawatts or about 6-7% of all commercial and utility systems in the USA. We analyzed almost 200 systems between 2008-20022 that were immediately impacted by these weather events. The immediate impact (outages) was determined to be about 1% of or a median of approximately 3 days of annual lost production. However, the risk these events pose is exemplified by a long tail where 0.4 % of all systems lost more than 2 weeks annual production. We also found a threshold for high wind (90 km/hr) and hail (25mm), above which we observed significantly higher degradation implying long-term damage to the systems. In addition, we are using satellite imagery to quantify visible damage to PV plants. Finally, we share module, design and installation lessons from some observed case studies to improve extreme weather resilience for PV power systems.

PV Modules Temperature Variation and Patterns in Medium and Utility-Scale Floating PV Systems

This paper presents the preliminary results and findings of the four operational Floating PV systems across the USA. At each site, temperature of five PV modules located at North-West, North-East, Middle, South-West, and, South-East have been monitored through the Resistant Temperature Detector (RTD) sensors. Three RTDs were attached to each PV module on the rear-side along the diagonal at top, middle and bottom cells. The preliminary results reveal wide temperature differences among the inter and intra PV modules. Besides this, wave pattern temperatures were observed in a few PV modules. The final results, findings, and, factors responsible will be investigated during the next few months. Index Terms - photovoltaic module, floating PV systems, string, array, temperature, mismatch, utility scale.

Experimental Considerations for Estimating Degradation in PV Modules

Carefully controlled laboratory experiments and measurements can enable the determination of acceleration factors suitable for extrapolation to durability and performance of a fielded PV module. Ideally, a single mechanism can be identified with appropriate acceleration factors for extrapolation to the field. However, even with a single mechanism, the inherent uncertainty in these factors leads to uncertainty in the extrapolation which is greater the higher the acceleration factor. This course will explain how because of the wide range of acceleration factors for a given degradation mode, utilizing acceleration factors greater than about 10x will typically lead to unacceptable uncertainty in the results. Therefore, if even just a rank ordering of materials is desired, acceleration factors must be minimized which requires a good general understanding of the scale of the different acceleration factors for the degradation mode of interest. In this tutorial we will discuss what the different purposes are for many of the accelerated stress tests used today. E.g., what is a qualification test, a highly accelerated stress test, a rank ordering test, or a service life prediction test. We will discuss how one can understand the relationship between test results and expected field performance. A single accelerated stress test condition cannot duplicate outdoor exposure for all possible degradation pathways; therefore, one must use targeted evaluation of material properties at different stress levels to determine the relevant acceleration factors and fit it to a model. We will also discuss how to interpret the results of experiments understanding what is relevant/not relevant, or not e valuated in a test. There are many common error people make in their test interpretations because they push the stress levels to be too harsh. This creates biases and can mask the relevant failure modes and mechanisms or will erroneously lead one to over design materials against things that aren't relevant. Several case studies will be presented to illustrate appropriate interpretation of accelerated stress testing results.

1.1 eV GaInAs Cell Development for Dual-Use Solar and 1075 nm Laser Power Converters

Dual-use power converter cells can receive solar and laser power simultaneously to generate current, an application relevant to space and terrestrial industries. This study investigates two concepts of solar cells optimized for dual- use 1070 nm laser and solar power conversion, a single-junction and triple-junction cell. Because it is bandgap-tuned for a 1070 nm laser, the 1.1 eV junction is incorporated into each of the two designs, making its development key to the success of both concepts. Efficiency data for a one junction GaInAs cell demonstrates a laser conversion efficiency of 38% at 1070nm wavelength without an anti-reflection coating. However, the single-junction device requires optimization to reduce short wavelength absorption of the broad solar spectrum. In both devices, the graded buffer layers in the GaInAs cell affects the cell's performance by reducing threading dislocations in the active junction. However, the buffer in the three-junction device also acts as a lateral transport layer and so affects the fill factor depending on its sheet resistance. By varying the buffer thickness, we demonstrate a direct relationship between buffer thickness and sheet resistance reduction, while considering implications to open-circuit voltages. We also performed resistance modeling to determine the optimal grid spacing and thickness of the grid fingers to minimize losses due to sheet resistance and grid shading.

Catching Rays: How Bifacial_Radiance Sheds Light on the Future of Solar PV

The challenge of energy transition is immediate and immense, with current projections targeting 75 TW of photovoltaics (PV) capacity globally by 2050. Alongside the rapid deployment is the "solar-coaster" ride the PV industry experiences with evolving technologies and novel installation methods. In 2016, NREL developed bifacial_radiance, a python open-source modeling tool for bifacial PV. This tool is a wrapper of the raytracing engine Radiance, which you all know better than us at this workshop. Bifacial_radiance integrates the many characteristics of common PV systems to model irradiance on both the front and rear sides of bifacial PV technology - a technology that now represents 75% of utility-scale deployment in the US. Bifacial_radiance has been pivotal for understanding bifacial system performance, shading, and edge effects, and now agrivoltaics research. It has also helped develop simplified models used in PV due diligence tools for optimizing new deployments or evaluating the performance of existing projects. Now, it's the go-to comparison tool for many university, and industry-developed systems modeling tools, and a pivotal tool for further research in photovoltaics. This talk will cover the needs bifacial_radiance addresses as an open-source tool, its development path, and the opportunity for any raytracer to shine light on the solar industry through research and practical application of modeling in regular site installations and novel setups like agrivoltaics and vertical panels at high latitudes (and even the South Pole!).

Performance Modelling and Yearlong Outdoor Degradation Analysis of a GaAs//Si Tandem Module

Silicon-based tandem photovoltaic cells and modules are forecasted to enter mass production around the year 2026. Previous research efforts on tandem photovoltaic technology have focused heavily on increasing cell efficiencies. However, for successful large-scale deployment of tandem modules, reliability and long-term durability will be equally important. Outdoor performance data beyond the one-year mark enable sophisticated degradation analysis and help build confidence in the reliability and durability of this new technology.

Development of a Light-Trapping, Planar-Cavity Receiver for Enclosed Solar Particle Heating

Concentrating solar thermal power (CSP) technology development has recently focused on high efficiency power cycles and chemical reactions that require high operating temperatures. An increase in receiver operating temperatures relative to current commercial CSP technology is necessary to support more efficient, high temperature power cycles or thermochemical processes. Solar receivers operating with heat transfer media temperatures >700 degrees C face various challenges including thermal performance, scalability, thermal-mechanical issues, and receiver service life. In addition, heat transfer media selection for high-temperature processes has been moving towards inert solid particles in Gen3 CSP, and reactive solid media and/or gases in solar thermochemical processes. To overcome the shortcomings and limitations of conventional designs for molten salt or particle receivers and receiver reactors, we introduce a unique light-trapping, planar cavity receiver (LTPCR) configuration and will present the current development progresses to demonstrate receiver feasibility through modeling, testing, and prototype demonstration.
