National Renewable Energy Laboratory, South Table Mountain Campus, Golden, Colorado

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) South Table Mountain campus, located in Golden, Colorado, has multiyear datasets from buildings with approximately 1,100,000 sq ft of floor area. These 16 buildings include a large office, nine laboratories, and other education or public assembly facilities such as an education center, a warehouse, quick service restaurants, two site entrance security buildings, and a parking garage—all constructed and improved from 1982 to 2014. These datasets are also available from the NREL data storage and management platform SkySparks. The datasets contain electricity meter data (poser, voltage, and current) with 1-minute resolution and building automation system (BAS) data with resolutions of 5 or 15 minutes. Some subsystems (e.g., lighting) or equipment electricity data have the same intervals as above. Some mechanical equipment state or condition data, such as flow and temperature, are captured with 5- to 15-minute intervals. The types of measurement points (i.e., electrical meter power and zone temperature) and associated data quality across the campus are typical, which helps reduce the unreliability of data quality.

Enlightened Education: Solar Engineering Design to Energize School Facilities

Here, this paper explores the potential for universities, colleges, and K-12 schools to implement solar electric infrastructure projects on their campuses that not only provide financial savings but also provide learning environments and instructional opportunities for students. A recent case study at Madison College is presented for a 1.85 MW photovoltaic system that is the largest solar rooftop installation in the State of Wisconsin. The system was designed with several unique features to facilitate public access, provide students with hands-on interaction, and compare and contrast several different types of solar equipment. Special engineering design considerations should be made when installing solar on schools, and recommended practices from the Madison College experience are detailed. Madison College completed a Solar Roadmap in order to prioritize and sequence investment in solar across the multiple buildings and campus locations operated by the college. The featured installation was the first project within that plan. A ten-step guide on how to create a solar roadmap is shared, so that other schools can learn from Madison College’s experience and replicate the process for their own institutions.

AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-xUN NEON University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDE)

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xUN NEON University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDE). This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xUN NEON University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDE) produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - NEON's Domain 5 core site is located at the University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDERC) East. Straddling the border between Northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the UNDERC property comprises approximately 7500 acres and is maintained as an environmental education and research facility. UNDERC also has 30 lakes comprising 1350 acres, including Crampton Lake, a NEON aquatics site. Region-wide logging for pine in the late 1800s and early to mid-1900's led to clear cutting of most forested areas on the property. The main parcel was donated to the University in the 1930s. Timber harvest continued into the 1950s and later, leaving a mixture of successional forest regrowth. Since the 1970s, the site has been minimally managed to maintain access for recreational, educational and research goals.

R&D Needs for a US Fusion Magnet Base Program

Significant technology maturation efforts are underway by privately funded fusion startups with the goal to demonstrate mature HTS magnet technology. To support the private sector development effort and the DOE milestone based program, a U.S. Fusion Magnet Community Workshop was held on March 14-15, 2023 in Princeton, NJ. This was the first U.S. community workshop focused on fusion magnet technologies aimed at determining the structure and technical direction for a public program designed to complement the private fusion industry landscape. Based on the wide range of different contributions, a set of general themes and fusion magnet R&D needs were identified and discussed. Feedback received to the workshop charge questions highlighted critical magnet R&D gaps such as availability of existing large cable and coil test facilities, a magnet education program that can generate a trained and essential workforce by leveraging R&D capabilities of universities, U.S. national labs, and fusion industry. Other opportunities synergistic and complementary with high energy physics, high field magnets that are open for a broad range of science drivers. The defined R&D gaps underpin the need for a mid-term and long-term public program in fusion magnet development, which reflects the purpose of the workshop in developing the rationale and consent for such a base program. A self-consistent, fusion specific U.S. fusion magnet program will complement and de-risk fusion pilot plants (FPPs) of promising magnetic configurations developed by private companies on a timeline consistent with the NASEM report on bringing fusion to the U.S. grid. We describe the magnet challenges presented and R&D needs discussed in the workshop. In conclusion, these challenges and R&D needs provide focus for the development of U.S. mid-term and long term roadmaps on enabling HTS for high field fusion.

INS–Support for Formal Cyber Security Education in Brazil–After Action Report

The adoption of digital technology into Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems in nuclear facilities fundamentally changes the nature of these systems. Greater interconnectivity of reprogrammable, and functionally interdependent control systems has given rise to the need for computer security consideration in digital I&C Systems. The cyber security of I&C systems presents a growing risk to nuclear facilities and requires the development of educational and research tools to ensure the safety of these facilities. Currently there is a major gap in formal educational offerings on cyber security for these Operational Technology (OT) systems. To provide formal cyber security education resources, DOE’s office of International Nuclear Security (INS) partnered with the University of São Paulo (USP) to develop a training course on the cyber security of nuclear facility I&C systems using the hypothetical Nuclear Power Plant, Asherah.
