Transmission media effects on precise Doppler tracking

The effects of the transmission media - the earth's troposphere and ionosphere, and the solar wind - on precise Doppler tracking are discussed. The charged particle effects can be largely removed by dual frequency observations; however there are limitations to these corrections (besides system noise and/or finite integration times) including the effects of magnetic fields, diffraction, and differential refraction, all of which must be carefully evaluated. The earth's troposphere can contribute an error of delta f/f approximately 10 to the minus 14th power.

Satellite Interference Analysis and Simulation Using Personal Computers

This report presents the complete analysis and formulas necessary to quantify the interference experienced by a generic satellite communications receiving station due to an interfering satellite. Both satellites, the desired as well as the interfering satellite, are considered to be in elliptical orbits. Formulas are developed for the satellite look angles and the satellite transmit angles generally related to the land mask of the receiving station site for both satellites. Formulas for considering Doppler effect due to the satellite motion as well as the Earth's rotation are developed. The effect of the interfering-satellite signal modulation and the Doppler effect on the power received are considered. The statistical formulation of the interference effect is presented in the form of a histogram of the interference to the desired signal power ratio. Finally, a computer program suitable for microcomputers such as IBM AT is provided with the flowchart, a sample run, results of the run, and the program code.

Doppler and range determination for deep space vehicles using active optical transponders

This paper describes and analyzes two types of laser system employing active transponders that could accurately determine Doppler and range to deep space vehicles from earth-orbiting satellites. The first is a noncoherent optical system in which the Doppler effect on an intensity-modulating subcarrier is measured. The second is a coherent optical system in which the Doppler effect of the optical carrier itself is measured. Doppler and range measurement errors are mathematically modeled and, for three example systems, numerically evaluated.

Some aspects of the aeroacoustics of high-speed jets

Some of the background to contemporary jet aeroacoustics is addressed. Then scaling laws for noise generation by low-Mach-number airflows and by turbulence convected at 'not so low' Mach number is reviewed. These laws take into account the influence of Doppler effects associated with the convection of aeroacoustic sources. Next, a uniformly valid Doppler-effect approximation exhibits the transition, with increasing Mach number of convection, from compact-source radiation at low Mach numbers to a statistical assemblage of conical shock waves radiated by eddies convected at supersonic speed. In jets, for example, supersonic eddy convection is typically found for jet exit speeds exceeding twice the atmospheric speed of sound. The Lecture continues by describing a new dynamical theory of the nonlinear propagation of such statistically random assemblages of conical shock waves. It is shown, both by a general theoretical analysis and by an illustrative computational study, how their propagation is dominated by a characteristic 'bunching' process. That process associated with a tendency for shock waves that have already formed unions with other shock waves to acquire an increased proneness to form further unions - acts so as to enhance the high-frequency part of the spectrum of noise emission from jets at these high exit speeds.

Spread-spectrum code acquisition in the presence of Doppler shift and data modulation

A spread-spectrum code acquisition technique for a direct-sequence (DS) system in the presence of Doppler effect and data modulation is investigated. Both the carrier-frequency offset and code-frequency offset due to severe Doppler effect are considered. The code-chip slipping during the correlation process caused by code-frequency offset can degrade the acquisition performance significantly. However, this issue can be alleviated by compensating code-frequency offset in an appropriate manner. Results are presented for the cases with and without data modulation. Coherent detection is considered when there is no data modulation. If data modulation is present, the authors partition the correlation time into subintervals and the integration results in these subintervals are square-law noncoherently combined for detection. The implementation of this code acquisition technique using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm is described. The use of theoretical results to estimate the hardware complexity of an actual system is illustrated step by step, showing that implementation is feasible with existing technology. The tradeoff between hardware complexity and acquisition performance is discussed.

Improved performance of a digital phase-locked loop combined with a frequency/frequency-rate estimator

When a digital phase-locked loop with a long loop update time tracks a signal with high Doppler, the demodualtion losses due to frequency mismatch can become very significant. One way of reducing these Doppler-related losses is to compensate for the Doppler effect using some kind of frequency-rate estimator. The performance of the fixed-window least-squares estimator and the Kalman filter is investigated; several Doppler compensating techniques are proposed. It is shown that the variance of the frequency estimator can be made as small as desired, and with this, the Doppler effect can be effectively compensated. The remaining demodulation losses due to phase jitter in the loop can be less than 0.1 dB.

Turbulence in planetary occultations. II - Effects on atmospheric profiles derived from Doppler measurements. III - Effects on atmospheric profiles derived from intensity measurements

The nature and magnitude of turbulence-induced errors in atmospheric profiles derived from Doppler measurements made during radio occultations are investigated. It is found that turbulence in planetary atmospheres induces both fluctuating and systematic errors in derived profiles, but the errors of both types are very small. Consideration of the occultation of Mariner 10 by Venus and of the Pioneer occultations by Jupiter shows that the rms fractional errors in the atmospheric profiles derived from these observations were less than 0.01 in both temperature and pressure, while the fractional systematic errors were typically of the order of 1 millionth. The extent to which atmospheric profiles derived from radio and optical intensity measurements are affected by turbulence is also examined. The results indicate that turbulence in planetary atmospheres has only a marginal effect on derived profiles in the weak-scattering limit and that the turbulence-induced errors in this case are always much larger than the corresponding errors in profiles derived from radio Doppler measurements.

Onboard Doppler Compensation for Low-Rate Communications over Commercial Relay Satellites

NASA spacecraft performing scientific and exploration missions may increasingly communicate over commercial relay satellites, including those that operate at Ka-band. Ideally these spacecraft could use the same Ka-band terminal for low-rate telemetry/commanding. However, this use case presents an issue since most commercial relay systems were designed with terrestrial users in mind and cannot easily handle the Doppler effects of orbiting spacecraft. In this work we propose onboard Doppler compensation allowing spacecraft to use existing relay satellite infrastructure without modification. Specifically, we present a method for digital compensation based on a series of piecewise linear sweeps which minimizes resources used on the spacecraft’s radio. We perform orbital mechanics simulations to estimate the worst-case Doppler profiles experienced by spacecraft in several low-Earth orbits. We emulate these effects in a laboratory experiment and demonstrate the proposed technique will reduce Doppler effects by more than two orders of magnitude. The residual Doppler is small enough that modems used at commercial relay sites are able to receive error-free data even when operating at their lowest supported symbol rate.

The Effect of Doppler Frequency Shift, Frequency Offset of the Local Oscillators, and Phase Noise on the Performance of Coherent OFDM Receivers

This paper first shows that the Doppler frequency shift affects the frequencies of the RF carrier, subcarriers, envelope, and symbol timing by the same percentage in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal or any other modulated signals. Then the SNR degradation of an OFDM system due to Doppler frequency shift, frequency offset of the local oscillators and phase noise is analyzed. Expressions are given and values for 4-, 16-, 64-, and 256-QAM OFDM systems are calculated and plotted. The calculations show that the Doppler shift of the D3 project is about 305 kHz, and the degradation due to it is about 0.01 to 0.04 dB, which is negligible. The degradation due to frequency offset and phase noise of local oscillators will be the main source of degradation. To keep the SNR degradation under 0.1 dB, the relative frequency offset due to local oscillators must be below 0.01 for the 16 QAM-OFDM. This translates to an offset of 1.55 MHz (0.01 x 155 MHz) or a stability of 77.5 ppm (0.01 x 155 MHz/20 GHz) for the DI project. To keep the SNR degradation under 0.1 dB, the relative linewidth (0) due to phase noise of the local oscillators must be below 0.0004 for the 16 QAM-OFDM. This translates to a linewidth of 0.062 MHz (0.0004 x 155 MHz) of the 20 GHz RIF carrier. For a degradation of 1 dB, beta = 0.04, and the linewidth can be relaxed to 6.2 MHz.

Transcutaneous measurement of volume blood flow

Blood flow velocity measurements, using Doppler velocimeter, are described. The ability to measure blood velocity using ultrasound is derived from the Doppler effect; the change in frequency which occurs when sound is reflected or transmitted from a moving target. When ultrasound of the appropriate frequency is transmitted through a moving blood stream, the blood cells act as point scatterers of ultrasonic energy. If this scattered ultrasonic energy is detected, it is found to be shifted in frequency according to the velocity of the blood cells, nu, the frequency of the incident sound, f sub o, the speed of sound in the medium, c, and the angle between the sound beam and the velocity vector, o. The relation describing this effect is known as the Doppler equation. Delta f = 2 f sub o x nu x cos alpha/c. The theoretical and experimental methods are evaluated.

Gravitational Physics Research

Gravitational physics research at ISPAE is connected with NASA's Relativity Mission (Gravity Probe B (GP-B)) which will perform a test of Einstein's General Relativity Theory. GP-B will measure the geodetic and motional effect predicted by General Relativity Theory with extremely stable and sensitive gyroscopes in an earth orbiting satellite. Both effects cause a very small precession of the gyroscope spin axis. The goal of the GP-B experiment is the measurement of the gyroscope precession with very high precision. GP-B is being developed by a team at Stanford University and is scheduled for launch in the year 2001. The related UAH research is a collaboration with Stanford University and MSFC. This research is focussed primarily on the error analysis and data reduction methods of the experiment but includes other topics concerned with experiment systems and their performance affecting the science measurements. The hydrogen maser is the most accurate and stable clock available. It will be used in future gravitational physics missions to measure relativistic effects such as the second order Doppler effect. The HMC experiment, currently under development at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), will test the performance and capability of the hydrogen maser clock for gravitational physics measurements. UAH in collaboration with the SAO science team will study methods to evaluate the behavior and performance of the HMC. The GP-B data analysis developed by the Stanford group involves complicated mathematical operations. This situation led to the idea to investigate alternate and possibly simpler mathematical procedures to extract the GP-B measurements form the data stream. Comparison of different methods would increase the confidence in the selected scheme.

Doppler Observations of the Impact of Comet SL9 Fragment A

An attempt to detect Doppler effects on Jupiter during the impact of fragment A of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet is discussed. A short description is given of the technique used to observe the impact. Observations are presented, and a theoretical analysis and inter- pretation are given. The instrumentation used is an advanced and more sensitive version of the Magneto-Optical Filter & a 40 cm telescope.

A comparison of several methods of estimating the columnar electron content of the plasmasphere

Data from several different observation techniques are used to estimate the columnar electron content of the plasmasphere. The estimate is based upon the subtraction of the ionospheric electron content from the total content along the radio path from ground to the geostationary satellite ATS-6. The Radio Beacon Experiment on this satellite allows a very accurate determination of the total electron content up to the height of the satellite. For the ionospheric electron content (ground to appr. 2000 km) the following techniques are used: (1) Faraday effect on the ATS-6 signals, (2) differential Doppler effect on the signals of the low-orbiting NNSS satellites, (3) combination of bottomside and topside ionograms, and (4) extrapolation of bottomside ionograms. It is shown that the combination of group delay and Faraday effect data on the ATS-6 RBE signals provide the most reliable estimates of the columnar electron content of the plasmasphere. Data from low-orbiting satellites support this conclusion.

Fitting improved accretion disk models to the multiwavelength continua of quasars and active galactic nuclei

Fits to the ultraviolet-optical-infrared spectra of 60 quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are investigated, using black hole accretion disk models. The disk is assumed to be geometrically thin and optically thick. The observed spectrum from a black hole accretion disk, rotating (Kerr) or nonrotating (Schwarzschild), is transformed by the geometric inclination effect, Doppler shifts, gravitational redshifts, and gravitational focusing. These effects alter the locally emitted fluxes and produce harder spectra for an observer at higher inclination angles. The relativistic corrections are much more significant in the Kerr geometry since the inner edge of the disk is much closer to the rotating black hole. A simple inverse relation between the inferred black hole mass and the assumed inclination angle was found in the Kerr case, while the inferred accretion rate (solar masses/yr) remains independent of the angle. In the Schwarzschild case, the ratio of the inferred accretion rate to the black hole mass remains roughly constant when the viewing angle changes. In both geometries, low-redshift Seyfert galaxies have relatively low accretion rates, only a few percent of their Eddington luminosities, while the most luminous quasars are accreting near their Eddington limits.
