Majorana versus Dirac Constraints on the Neutrino Dipole Moments

Massive neutrinos are guaranteed to have nonzero electromagnetic moments and, since there are at least three neutrino species, these dipole moments define a matrix. Here, we estimate the current upper bounds on all independent neutrino electromagnetic moments, concentrating on Earth-bound experiments and measurements with solar neutrinos, including the very recent results reported by XENONnT. We make no simplifying assumptions and compare the hypotheses that neutrinos are Majorana fermions or Dirac fermions. In particular, we fully explore constraints in the Dirac-neutrino parameter space. Majorana and Dirac neutrinos are different; for example, the upper bounds on the magnitudes of the elements of the dipole moment matrix are weaker for Dirac neutrinos, relative to Majorana neutrinos. The potential physics reach of next-generation experiments also depends on the nature of the neutrino. We find that a next-generation experiment two orders of magnitude more sensitive to the neutrino electromagnetic moments via $\nu_{\mu}$ elastic scattering may discover that the neutrino electromagnetic moments are nonzero if the neutrinos are Dirac fermions. Instead, if the neutrinos are Majorana fermions, such a discovery is ruled out by existing solar neutrino data, unless there are more than three light neutrinos.

Nanoscale View of Engineered Massive Dirac Quasiparticles in Lithographic Superstructures

Massive Dirac fermions are low-energy electronic excitations characterized by a hyperbolic band dispersion. They play a central role in several emerging physical phenomena such as topological phase transitions, anomalous Hall effects, and superconductivity. This work demonstrates that massive Dirac fermions can be controllably induced by lithographically patterning superstructures of nanoscale holes in a graphene device. Their band dispersion is systematically visualized using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with nanoscale spatial resolution. A linear scaling of effective mass with feature sizes is reported, underlining the Dirac nature of the superstructures. In situ electrostatic doping dramatically enhances the effective hole mass and leads to the direct observation of an electronic band gap that results in a peak-to-peak band separation of 0.64 ± 0.03 eV, which is shown via first-principles calculations to be strongly renormalized by carrier-induced screening. The methodology demonstrates band structure engineering guided by directly viewing structurally and electrically tunable massive Dirac quasiparticles in lithographic superstructures at the nanoscale.

High-entropy engineering of the crystal and electronic structures in a Dirac material

Dirac and Weyl semimetals are a central topic of contemporary condensed matter physics, and the discovery of new compounds with Dirac/Weyl electronic states is crucial to the advancement of topological materials and quantum technologies. Here we show a widely applicable strategy that uses high configuration entropy to engineer relativistic electronic states. We take the A MnSb 2 ( A = Ba, Sr, Ca, Eu, and Yb) Dirac material family as an example and demonstrate that mixing of Ba, Sr, Ca, Eu and Yb at the A site generates the compound (Ba 0.38 Sr 0.14 Ca 0.16 Eu 0.16 Yb 0.16 )MnSb 2 (denoted as A 5 MnSb 2 ), giving access to a polar structure with a space group that is not present in any of the parent compounds. A 5 MnSb 2 is an entropy-stabilized phase that preserves its linear band dispersion despite considerable lattice disorder. Although both A 5 MnSb 2 and A MnSb 2 have quasi-two-dimensional crystal structures, the two-dimensional Dirac states in the pristine A MnSb 2 evolve into a highly anisotropic quasi-three-dimensional Dirac state triggered by local structure distortions in the high-entropy phase, which is revealed by Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations measurements.

Robust three-dimensional type-II Dirac semimetal state in SrAgBi

Topological semimetals such as Dirac, Weyl or nodal line semimetals are widely studied for their peculiar properties including high Fermi velocities, small effective masses and high magnetoresistance. When the Dirac cone is tilted, exotic phenomena could emerge whereas materials hosting such states are promising for photonics and plasmonics applications. Here we present evidence that SrAgBi is a spin-orbit coupling-induced type-II three-dimensional Dirac semimetal featuring tilted Dirac cone at the Fermi energy. Near charge compensation and Fermi surface characteristics are not much perturbed by 7% of vacancy defects on the Ag atomic site, suggesting that SrAgBi could be a material of interest for observation of robust optical and spintronic topological quantum phenomena.

Floquet–Bloch manipulation of the Dirac gap in a topological antiferromagnet

Floquet–Bloch manipulation, achieved by driving a material periodically with a laser pulse, is a method that enables the engineering of electronic and magnetic phases in solids by effectively modifying the structure of their electronic bands. However, the application of Floquet–Bloch manipulation in topological magnetic systems, particularly those with inherent disorder, remains largely unexplored. Here, in this study, we realize Floquet–Bloch manipulation of the Dirac surface-state mass of the topological antiferromagnet MnBi 2 Te 4 . Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that opposite helicities of mid-infrared circularly polarized light result in substantially different Dirac mass gaps in the antiferromagnetic phase, despite the equilibrium Dirac cone being massless. We explain our findings in terms of a Dirac fermion with a random mass. Our results underscore Floquet–Bloch manipulation as a powerful tool for controlling topology, even in the presence of disorder, and for uncovering properties of materials that may elude conventional probes.

Interaction-driven quantum anomalous Hall insulator in a Dirac semimetal

Here, the interaction-driven quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator has been sought for a long time in a Dirac semimetal with linear band touching points at the Fermi level. By combining exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group, and analytical methods, we study a spinless fermion system on the checkerboard lattice with twofold rotational symmetry, which realizes two Dirac band touching points in the absence of interaction. At weak coupling, the Dirac semimetal is stable. At a finite density-density repulsive interaction, we analyze possible symmetry broken states, and find that an QAH state is stabilized when the interaction strength exceeds the energy scale controlling the separation between the Dirac points. Through numerical simulations, we verify the existence of the QAH phase with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and quantized Chern number C = 1.

Charge order induced Dirac pockets in the nonsymmorphic crystal TaTe 4

The interplay between charge order (CO) and nontrivial band topology has spurred tremendous interest in understanding topological excitations beyond the single-particle description. In a quasi-one-dimensional nonsymmorphic crystal TaTe 4 , the (2a×2b×3c) charge ordered ground state drives the system into a space group where the symmetry indicator features the emergence of Dirac fermions and unconventional double Dirac fermions. In this study, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we provide evidence of the CO induced Dirac fermion-related bands near the Fermi level. Furthermore, the band folding at the Fermi level is compatible with the new periodicity dictated by the CO, indicating that the electrons near the Fermi level follow the crystalline symmetries needed to host double Dirac fermions in this system.

Semi-Dirac Fermions in a Topological Metal

Topological semimetals with massless Dirac and Weyl fermions represent the forefront of quantum materials research. In two dimensions, a peculiar class of fermions that are massless in one direction and massive in the perpendicular direction was predicted 16 years ago. These highly exotic quasiparticles—the semi-Dirac fermions—ignited intense theoretical and experimental interest but remain undetected. Using magneto-optical spectroscopy, we demonstrate the defining feature of semi-Dirac fermions— B 2 / 3 scaling of Landau levels—in a prototypical nodal-line metal ZrSiS. In topological metals, including ZrSiS, nodal lines extend the band degeneracies from isolated points to lines, loops, or even chains in the momentum space. With calculations and theoretical modeling, we pinpoint the observed semi-Dirac spectrum to the crossing points of nodal lines in ZrSiS. Crossing nodal lines exhibit a continuum absorption spectrum but with singularities that scale as B 2 / 3 at the crossing. Our work sheds light on the hidden quasiparticles emerging from the intricate topology of crossing nodal lines and highlights the potential to explore quantum geometry with linear optical responses. Buried Dirac Points in Quantum Spin Hall Insulators: Implications for Majorana Kramers Pair-Based Quantum Computing

Quantum spin Hall insulators (QSHIs) host helical electronic edge states that are protected from backscattering due to time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Despite considerable work investigating QSHI edge states, there is still an open question about their unexpected resilience to large magnetic fields where TRS is undoubtedly broken. In this work, we investigate the transport properties of helical edge states in a QSHI-superconductor (QSHI-SC) junction formed by a In⁢As(15 nm)/Ga⁢Sb(5 nm) double quantum well and a superconducting tantalum (Ta) constriction. We observe a robust conductance plateau up to 2 T, signaling resilient edge-state transport. Using a modified Landauer-Büttiker analysis, we find that the zero-field conductance is consistent with 98% Andreev-reflection probability owing to the high transparency of the (In⁢As/Ga⁢Sb)-Ta interface. Such resilience is consistent with the Dirac point for the edge states being buried in the bulk valence band. We further theoretically show that a buried Dirac point does not affect the robustness of the quasi-one-dimensional topological superconducting phase. We find that a buried Dirac point favors the hybridization of Majorana Kramers pairs (MKPs)—predicted to exist in a QSHI-SC constriction—and fermionic modes in the QSHI vacuum edge resulting in extended MKP states, highlighting the subtle role of buried Dirac points in probing MKPs.

Correlated Dirac–Coulomb–Breit multiconfigurational self-consistent-field methods

The fully correlated frequency-independent Dirac–Coulomb–Breit Hamiltonian provides the most accurate description of electron–electron interaction before going to a genuine relativistic quantum electrodynamics theory of many-electron systems. In this work, we introduce a correlated Dirac–Coulomb–Breit multiconfigurational self-consistent-field method within the frameworks of complete active space and density matrix renormalization group. In this approach, the Dirac–Coulomb–Breit Hamiltonian is included variationally in both the mean-field and correlated electron treatment. Here, we also analyze the importance of the Breit operator in electron correlation and the rotation between the positive- and negative-orbital space in the no-virtual-pair approximation. Atomic fine-structure splittings and lanthanide contraction in diatomic fluorides are used as benchmark studies to understand the contribution from the Breit correlation.

Evolution from topological Dirac metal to flat-band-induced antiferromagnet in layered K x Ni 4 S 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1)

Condensed matter systems with coexisting Dirac cones and flat bands and a switchable control between them within a single system are desirable but remarkably uncommon. Here, we report a layered quantum material system, K x Ni 4 S 2 (0 <= x <= 1), that simultaneously hosts both characteristics without involving typical Kagome/honeycomb lattices. Enabled by a topochemical K-deintercalation process, the Fermi surface can be fine-tuned continuously over a wide range of energies. Consequently, a non-magnetic Dirac-metal state with a topological nontrivial Z 2 index of 1;(000), supported by first-principles calculations and high mobility up to 1,471 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , is observed on the K-rich x = 1 side, whereas a flat-band-induced antiferromagnetic state with T N up to 10.1 K emerges as the K-content approaches 0. The K x Ni 4 S 2 system offers a versatile platform for exploring emerging phenomena and underscores aviable pathway for in situ control of quantum materials dominated by Dirac cones, flat bands, and their interplay.

Two-dimensional ruthenium boride: a Dirac nodal loop quantum electrocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Catalysts with high carrier mobility, high activity, and an active basal plane have been highly sought for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, combining these advantages into one single material is a grand challenge. Herein, using first principles computations, we predicted that a two-dimensional (2D) Dirac nodal loop semimetal, namely the RuB 4 monolayer, is promising as a superior catalyst for the HER. Our systematic computations showed that the single layer RuB 4 is thermodynamically, dynamically, mechanically, and thermally stable and presents multiple Ru and B sites for the HER on the basal plane. The estimated Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption at a Ru site is approaching zero (–8.8 meV), suggesting its excellent HER performance. The RuB 4 monolayer is a Dirac nodal loop semimetal with high Fermi velocities, which can accelerate charge transfer between catalysts and reaction intermediates. The RuB 4 monolayer is an auxetic material with an out-of-plane negative Poisson's ratio, implying its novel mechanical properties. Finally, this work provides an example of using a Dirac nodal loop semimetal for high-performance HER catalysts, which is a promising alternative to the known catalysts with trivial metallic properties.

Evidence of decoupling of surface and bulk states in Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2

Abstract Dirac semimetals have attracted a great deal of current interests due to their potential applications in topological quantum computing, low-energy electronic devices, and single photon detection in the microwave frequency range. Herein are results from analyzing the low magnetic ( B ) field weak-antilocalization behaviors in a Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 thin flake device. At high temperatures, the phase coherence length l ϕ first increases with decreasing temperature ( T ) and follows a power law dependence of l ϕ ∝ T −0.4 . Below ∼3 K, l ϕ tends to saturate to a value of ∼180 nm. Another fitting parameter α , which is associated with independent transport channels, displays a logarithmic temperature dependence for T > 3 K, but also tends to saturate below ∼3 K. The saturation value, ∼1.45, is very close to 1.5, indicating three independent electron transport channels, which we interpret as due to decoupling of both the top and bottom surfaces as well as the bulk. This result, to our knowledge, provides first evidence that the surfaces and bulk states can become decoupled in electronic transport in Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 .

Coupling of magnetism and Dirac fermions in YbMnSb 2

Here, we report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of magnetic excitations in YbMnSb 2 , a low-carrier-density Dirac semimetal in which the antiferromagnetic Mn layers are interleaved with Sb layers that host Dirac fermions. We observe a measurable broadening of spin waves, which is consistent with substantial spin-fermion coupling. The spin-wave damping γ in YbMnSb 2 is roughly twice larger compared to that in a sister material, YbMnBi 2 , where an indication of a small damping consistent with a theoretical analysis of the spin-fermion coupling was reported. The interplane interaction between the Mn layers in YbMnSb 2 is also much stronger, suggesting that the interaction mechanism is rooted in the same spin-fermion coupling. Our results establish the systematics of spin-fermion interactions in layered magnetic Dirac materials.

Three-dimensional dispersion in the type-II Dirac semimetals PtTe 2 and PdTe 2 revealed through circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

PtTe 2 and PdTe 2 are among the first transition metal dichalcogenides that were predicted to host type-II Dirac fermions, exotic particles prohibited in free space. These materials are layered and air stable, which makes them top candidates for technological applications that take advantage of their anisotropic magnetotransport properties. Here, in this work, we provide a detailed characterization of the electronic structure of PtTe 2 and PdTe 2 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory calculations, offering an alternative interpretation for one of the Dirac-like dispersions in these materials. Through the use of circularly polarized light, we report a different behavior of such dispersion in PdTe 2 compared to PtTe 2 , that we relate to a symmetry analysis of the dipole matrix element. Such analysis reveals a link between the observed circular dichroism and the different momentum-dependent terms in the dispersion of these two compounds, despite their close similarity in crystal structure. Additionally, our data show a clear difference in the circular dichroic signal for the type-II Dirac cones characteristic of these materials, compared to their topologically protected surface states. Our paper provides a useful reference for the ARPES characterization of other transition metal dichalcogenides with topological properties and illustrates the use of circular dichroism as a guide to identify the topological character and attributes of two otherwise equivalent band dispersions.

Synergetic Ferroelectricity and Superconductivity in Zero-Density Dirac Semimetals near Quantum Criticality

Here, we study superconductivity in a three-dimensional zero-density Dirac semimetal in proximity to a ferroelectric quantum critical point. We find that the interplay of criticality, inversion-symmetry breaking, and Dirac dispersion gives rise to a robust superconducting state at the charge-neutrality point, where no Fermi surface is present. Using Eliashberg theory, we show that the ferroelectric quantum critical point is unstable against the formation of a ferroelectric density wave (FDW), whose fluctuations, in turn, lead to a first-order superconducting transition. Surprisingly, long-range superconducting and FDW orders are found to cooperate with each other, in contrast to the more usual scenario of phase competition. Therefore, we suggest that driving charge neutral Dirac materials, e.g., Pb x Sn 1–x Te, through a ferroelectric quantum critical point may lead to superconductivity intertwined with FDW order.

Quantum Nonlinear Acoustic Hall Effect and Inverse Acoustic Faraday Effect in Dirac Insulators

Here, we propose to realize the quantum nonlinear Hall effect and the inverse Faraday effect through the acoustic wave in a time-reversal invariant but inversion broken Dirac insulator. We focus on the acoustic frequency much lower than the Dirac gap such that the interband transition is suppressed and these effects arise solely from the intrinsic valley-contrasting band topology. The corresponding acoustoelectric conductivity and magnetoacoustic susceptibility are both proportional to the quantized valley Chern number and independent of the quasiparticle lifetime. The linear and nonlinear components of the longitudinal and transverse topological currents can be tuned by adjusting the polarization and propagation directions of the surface acoustic wave. The static magnetization generated by a circularly polarized acoustic wave scales linearly with the acoustic frequency as well as the strain-induced charge density. Our results unveil a quantized nonlinear topological acoustoelectric response of gapped Dirac materials, like hexagonal boron nitride and transition-metal dichalcogenide, paving the way toward room-temperature acoustoelectric devices due to their large band gaps.

Doping topological Dirac semimetal with magnetic impurities: Electronic structure of Mn-doped Cd 3 ⁢As 2

The prospect of transforming a Dirac topological semimetal (TSM) into a Weyl TSM phase, following doping by magnetic impurities, is central to TSM applications. The magnetic field from polarized 𝑑 levels of magnetic impurities produces a field with a sharp local structure. To what extent magnetic impurities act in the same manner as an applied field and what are the effects of such a field on the electronic structure of a Dirac TSM are the subject of this paper. We present electronic structure calculations of bulk Cd 3 ⁢As 2 with substitutional doping of Mn impurities in the dilute alloy range. Quasiparticle 𝐺⁡𝑊 (QS⁢𝐺⁡𝑊) ab initio electronic structure calculations are used in conjunction with 𝑘 · 𝑝 model Hamiltonian calculations. As expected, we observe the splitting of the Dirac points into pairs of Weyl points following the doping with Mn. We also show that the electronic structure of Mn-doped Cd 3⁢ As 2 can be emulated by the electronic structure of pristine Cd 3⁢ As 2 with an appropriate external magnetic field. Some properties of the conductivity of bulk Cd 3 ⁢As 2 for different magnetic field orientations are also investigated. Our results inform future opportunities for unique device functionality based on band structure tuning not found in conventional magnetic Weyl TSM.
