Nonintrusive projection-based reduced order modeling using stable learned differential operators

Nonintrusive projection-based reduced order models (ROMs) are essential for dynamics prediction in multi-query applications where underlying governing equations are known but the access to the source of the underlying full order model (FOM) is unavailable; that is, FOM is a glass-box. This article proposes a learn-then-project approach for nonintrusive model reduction. In the first step of this approach, high-dimensional stable sparse learned differential operators (S-LDOs) are determined using the generated data. In the second step, the ordinary differential equations, comprising these S-LDOs, are used with suitable dimensionality reduction and low-dimensional subspace projection methods to provide equations for the evolution of reduced states. This approach allows easy integration into the existing intrusive ROM framework to enable nonintrusive model reduction while allowing the use of Petrov–Galerkin projections. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated for Galerkin and LSPG projection-based ROMs through four numerical experiments: 1-D scalar advection, 1-D Burgers, 2-D scalar advection and 1-D scalar advection–diffusion–reaction equations. In conclusion, the results indicate that the proposed nonintrusive ROM strategy provides accurate and stable dynamics prediction.

Conformal differential operator in embedding space and its applications

We develop techniques useful for obtaining conformal blocks in embedding space. We construct a unique differential operator in embedding space and use it to construct a function that will be an important ingredient in assembling conformal blocks. We show a number of relations that the components of conformal blocks satisfy and find invariance of our expressions under the dihedral group.

Boundary Corrections for Kernel Approximation to Differential Operators

The kernel-based approach to operator approximation for partial differential equations has been shown to be unconditionally stable for linear PDEs and numerically exhibit unconditional stability for non-linear PDEs. These methods have the same computational cost as an explicit finite difference scheme but can exhibit order reduction at boundaries. In previous work on periodic domains, order reduction was addressed, yielding high-order accuracy. The issue addressed in this work is the elimination of order reduction of the kernel-based approach for a more general set of boundary conditions. Further, we consider the case of both first and second order operators. To demonstrate the theory, we provide not only the mathematical proofs but also experimental results by applying various boundary conditions to different types of equations. The results agree with the theory, demonstrating a systematic path to high order for kernel-based methods on bounded domains.

On Lipschitz continuity of nonlinear differential operators

In connection with approximations for nonlinear evolution equations, it is standard to assume that nonlinear terms are at least locally Lipschitz continuous. However, it is shown here that f = f(X,del sub u(X)) is Lipschitz continuous from the subspace W sup 1, infinity is a subset of L sub 2 into W sup 1,2, and maps W sup 2, infinity into W sup 1, infinity, if and only if f is affine with W sup 1, infinity coefficients. In fact, a local version of this claim is proved.

The symbolic computation and automatic analysis of trajectories

Research was generally done on computation of trajectories of dynamical systems, especially control systems. Algorithms were further developed for rewriting expressions involving differential operators. The differential operators involved arise in the local analysis of nonlinear control systems. An initial design was completed of the system architecture for software to analyze nonlinear control systems using data base computing.
