Resilient Communications LDRD Poster

This poster is for the LDRD Poster Session held at INL. The intent is to highlight the intent of the project which was to develop a resilient communication capability for the WSComm waveform. The poster shows notional pictures of communications being inhibited by a low power transmitter such as one found in modern drones. It then highlights interference tolerance performance and notionally shows that replay attacks may impede the signal. By implementing Transmission Security (TRANSEC), one can protect the waveform from such attacks.

Sockeye Code Validation Against UNIST Heat Pipe - Poster - Internship 2025

Sockeye is an engineering level code being developed under the MOOSE framework for modeling heat pipes. A heat pipe is a sealed tube with a wick structure filled with a working fluid that transfers heat efficiently and passively via phase change of the working fluid. Heat applied to the evaporator end creates a pressure gradient which causes vapor to migrate to the condenser end where the vapor deposits its energy and condenses. Capillary force generated by the wick structure then draws the liquid back to the evaporator. A validation study was performed to compare the Sockeye code against data produced at the Ulsan National Institute of Standards and Technology for a slightly overfilled sodium heat pipe. The heat pipe was operated under natural convection cooling and a decreasing inactive length was observed. The experiment was modeled in Sockeye using the condenser pool model, the front non-condensable gas (NCG) model, and the mixture NCG model separately to reproduce the inactive length phenomenon. Also, a new capability was implemented in MOOSE to allow for conjugate heat transfer from the condenser based on the Churchill-Chu correlation for natural convection. The condenser pool model showed an increasing inactive length, demonstrating that the behavior was likely not caused by a pool of excess liquid. The front NCG model was able to show good agreement with the experiment, but it suffered convergence issues at the front. Finally, the mixture NCG model gave good results when the axial mesh was sufficiently refined. This work culminated in additions to the Sockeye documentation and a contribution to a journal article that will be published later. This poster is a summary of my work which I can take back to my university for presentation.

Calorimeter calibration and performance for the Mu2e experiment

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for the charged lepton flavour-violating conversion of a muon into an electron, aiming to reach a sensitivity of $R_{\mu e} \sim 10^{-17}$, an improvement of four orders of magnitude over previous limits. To reach this goal, Mu2e will use an intense pulsed muon beam and a detector system composed of a high-precision straw tube tracker and a pure CsI crystal calorimeter. The calorimeter plays a crucial role in the experiment, as it provides particle identification capabilities that are necessary for background suppression. To perform its tasks, the detector must achieve an energy resolution better than 10% and a timing resolution below 500 ps for 100 MeV electrons. Cosmic-ray data and laser pulses are used to equalize the response of each channel, to calibrate the energy scale and to monitor the system's stability over time. This poster reports on the calibration and analysis techniques developed to ensure that the calorimeter requirements for precise energy and time measurements are met. Results for the calorimeter performance obtained during the commissioning phase will be discussed, and an overview of the current status in the Mu2e experimental hall will be presented.

Developing a GUI for the Robotic Test Stand

The introduction of this poster explains the technology behind DUNE’s far and near detectors and how passing neutrinos generate electrons that drift into a wire grid. I then explain how 3 ASICs manage signals received from electron interception. Next, the poster states how COLDATA chips are undergoing quality control by a Robotic Test Stand using a state machine. I further explained how earlier tests were done via a command line script and the necessity to implement a user-friendly Graphical User Interface with new features a command line can’t implement. For the implementation section, tools and methods for implementation are listed such as Python, tkinter, and GitHub as well as how multithreading and queue implementation was necessary for GUI functionality. Then, I elaborated on the GUIs new features. Finally, I explain how the GUI will be distributed across multiple institutions and future changes planned for the GUI. Photos of the RTS, far detector cave, diagram of anode assembly plane, COLDATA chips, set up tab, result tab, and legacy command line interface are shown.

Superstructure Optimization for Brine Valorization from Brackish Water Desalination

This poster presents preliminary results from a superstructure optimization framework developed to identify cost-optimal brine valorization configurations for brackish water desalination plants across diverse U.S. regional feed chemistries. The study uses brackish groundwater compositions from Arizona, California, Florida, New Mexico, and Texas. Using Pyomo Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP) within the WaterTAP modeling environment, the optimization framework simultaneously evaluates thousands of candidate treatment configurations, spanning nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, and chemical precipitation, to minimize the levelized cost of water (LCOW) while meeting water recovery targets and product recovery constraints. Results across eight representative feed clusters demonstrate water recovery rates of 57–87% and net LCOW values ranging from -$0.032/m³ (net revenue-positive) to $0.80/m. Notably, no single process configuration was optimal across all feed types, underscoring the necessity of feed-specific optimization. Products targeted include calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) at $0.01/kg and sodium chloride (NaCl) at $0.10/kg, both at 95% purity, with product revenues offsetting treatment costs in several scenarios. The work advances NAWI's process systems engineering capabilities for multi-configuration screening.

High-Fidelity Modeling of a Type-5 Wind Turbine Gearbox (Intern Poster) [Poster]

Type-5 wind turbines are unique in their use of a permanent magnet synchronous generator, as well as their use of a hydraulic torque converter. This architecture presents an opportunity to provide steady and grid-ready energy without the need for a power converter. With infrastructure continuity and reliability being an important topic amongst renewable energies, researchers have been prompted to further investigate the benefits of type-5 turbines’ unique electromechanical configuration on stable electricity generation. Researchers involved in the WindSG project, SG standing for synchronous generator, are aiming to model a type-5 turbine using Real Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) to evaluate its efficacy in the grid. RSCAD, the software run on the RTDS, comes pre-loaded with electrical and electromechanical components to help simulate electrical generation and grid conditions. However, within this repertoire there is a lack of a component to represent a gearbox with high-fidelity. Within RSCAD’s case studies, the gearbox is often represented simply by a gear ratio value. This presented the task of developing a high-fidelity gearbox model in RSCAD for use in the larger RTDS type-5 wind turbine model. This poster describes a method of developing a lumped parameter mathematical model to represent a planetary-parallel-parallel gearbox in RSCAD for use in RTDS.
