The cost of direct air capture is sensitive to the lifetime of the sorbent. In this work, NETL presents the results of amine degradation experiments on a polymer supported molecular amine DAC sorbent.
Description of NETL's Direct Air Capture (DAC) Center, including design and capabilities of research units being installed for the evaluation of processes removing carbon dioxide from air.
Presentation made at the 2024 Annual International Pittsburgh Energy and Carbon Management Conference (PECMC) OCTOBER 7 - 9, 2024 (virtual). The presentation summarized the methodology and results from energy market scenario analyses of the deployment of Direct Air Capture technologies under net-zero CO2 requirements by 2050. The results showed strong deployment of DAC under all scenarios, with increased value of the technology when other CO2 reduction pathways were unavailable or minimized.

Low-resolution converters reduce the power consumption of wireless devices and help enable large energy-efficient arrays. In this letter, we evaluate the secrecy rate for the extreme case of 1-bit single-user multiple-input multiple-output systems following two signaling approaches. In the first method, the system uses discrete signaling. In the second, the system combines Gaussian signaling with artificial noise alongside power allocation. In the first case, we give a closed-form expression of the secrecy rate and propose an algorithm that provides near-optimal results for low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Further, in the second scenario, depending on the channel state information, we suggest different precoding plans and derive a secrecy rate lower bound. At low SNR, power is allocated to the main signal. Only at high SNR is optimal power allocation effective. Moreover, knowing the eavesdropper channel greatly improves the system’s secrecy.
Quantitative single crystal neutron-diffraction in diamond anvil cells has so far been limited by the neutron flux available at the various neutron sources. As a result, highly precise measurements of the exact position of light elements have not been possible preventing, for example, structural studies of hydrogen and hydrogen bonds under pressure. Here we report experiments carried out on SNAP at the Spallation Neutron Source (ORNL, TN, USA) to explore the possibility and current limits of such studies. Furthermore, we benchmarked the obtained data quality with reference experiments carried out on TOPAZ, a dedicated single-crystal instrument. We show that measuring single-crystal diffraction intensities on SNAP is possible to such a precision that we are able to resolve the hydrogen bonds in potassium dideuterium phosphate (DKDP) as well as in ice VI.
Researchers at Los Alamos have extensive capabilities in design, testing and optimization of: (1) new capture materials based on membrane separation, amine and other solvent and sorbent separation, and porous materials; (2) biological capture methods, particularly algae and plants; (3) full-scale systems using science-based virtual learning; and (4) system performance under specific meteorological conditions, impacts of CO2 capture via atmospheric data and simulations, and availability of energy and storage capacity. The goal for Los Alamos is advancing our physical technologies and engineered systems approaches from the development phase to a minimal viable product in the energy sector for commercial purposes. Los Alamos is seeking strategic commercialization partners to work with us in advancing these capabilities and technologies for commercial viability.
This poster outlines the current challenges the Direct Air Capture Center is facing with Sorbent Performance Measurements.
