Field-induced quantum critical point in the itinerant antiferromagnet Ti 3 Cu 4

New phases of matter emerge at the edge of magnetic instabilities, which can occur in materials with moments that are localized, itinerant or intermediate between these extremes. In local moment systems, such as heavy fermions, the magnetism can be tuned towards a zero-temperature transition at a quantum critical point (QCP) via pressure, chemical doping, and, rarely, magnetic field. By contrast, in itinerant moment systems, QCPs are more rare, and they are induced by pressure or doping; there are no known examples of field induced transitions. This means that no universal behaviour has been established across the whole itinerant-to-local moment range—a substantial gap in our knowledge of quantum criticality. Here we report an itinerant antiferromagnet, Ti 3 Cu 4 , that can be tuned to a QCP by a small magnetic field. We see signatures of quantum criticality and the associated non-Fermi liquid behaviour in thermodynamic and transport measurements, while band structure calculations point to an orbital-selective, spin density wave ground state, a consequence of the square net structural motif in Ti 3 Cu 4 . Ti 3 Cu 4 thus provides a platform for the comparison and generalisation of quantum critical behaviour across the whole spectrum of magnetism.

Spatially inhomogeneous competition between superconductivity and the charge density wave in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.67

The charge density wave in the high-temperature superconductor YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x (YBCO) has two different ordering tendencies differentiated by their c-axis correlations. These correspond to ferro- (F-CDW) and antiferro- (AF-CDW) couplings between CDWs in neighbouring CuO 2 bilayers. This discovery has prompted several fundamental questions: how does superconductivity adjust to two competing orders and are either of these orders responsible for the electronic reconstruction? Here we use x-ray diffraction to study YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.67 as a function of magnetic field and temperature. We show that regions with F-CDW correlations suppress superconductivity more strongly than those with AF-CDW correlations. This implies that an inhomogeneous superconducting state exists, in which some regions show a fragile form of superconductivity. By comparison of F-CDW and AF-CDW correlation lengths, it is concluded that F-CDW ordering is sufficiently long-range to modify the electronic structure. Our study thus suggests that F-CDW correlations impact both the superconducting and normal state properties of YBCO.

Direct Identification of Mixed-Metal Centers in Metal–Organic Frameworks: Cu 3 (BTC) 2 Transmetalated with Rh 2+ Ions

Raman spectroscopy was used to establish direct evidence of heterometallic metal centers in a metal–organic framework (MOF). The Cu 3 (BTC) 2 MOF HKUST-1 (BTC 3– = benzenetricarboxylate) was transmetalated by heating it in a solution of RhCl 3 to substitute Rh 2+ ions for Cu 2+ ions in the dinuclear paddlewheel nodes of the framework. In addition to the Cu–Cu and Rh–Rh stretching modes, Raman spectra of (Cu x Rh 1– x ) 3 (BTC) 2 show the Cu–Rh stretching mode, indicating that mixed-metal Cu–Rh nodes are formed after transmetalation. Density functional theory studies confirmed the assignment of a Raman peak at 285 cm –1 to the Cu–Rh stretching vibration. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments further supported the conclusion that Rh 2+ ions are substituted into the paddlewheel nodes of Cu 3 (BTC) 2 to form an isostructural heterometallic MOF, and electron microscopy studies showed that Rh and Cu are homogeneously distributed in (Cu x Rh 1– x ) 3 (BTC) 2 on the nanoscale.

Disentangling the role of bond lengths and orbital symmetries in controlling $T_c$ of optimally doped YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7

Optimally doped YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 (YBCO) has a high critical temperature, at 92 K. It is largely believed that Cooper pairs form in YBCO and other cuprates because of spin fluctuations, but the issue and the detailed mechanism are far from settled. In the present work, we employ a state-of-the-art first-principles ability to compute both the low- and high-energy spin fluctuations in optimally doped YBCO. We benchmark our results against recent inelastic neutron scattering and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements. Further, we use strain as an external parameter to modulate the spin fluctuations and superconductivity. We disentangle the roles of barium-apical oxygen hybridization, interlayer coupling, and orbital symmetries by applying an idealized strain, and also a strain with a fully relaxed structure. We show that shortening the distance between Cu layers is conducive to enhanced Fermi surface nesting, which increases spin fluctuations and drives up $T_c$. However, when the structure is fully relaxed, electrons flow to the $d_{z^2}$ orbital as a consequence of a shortened Ba-O bond, which is detrimental for superconductivity.

Nanosecond carrier lifetimes in solution-processed enargite (Cu 3 AsS 4 ) thin films

Enargite (ENG) Cu 3 AsS 4 is a promising material for photovoltaic applications due to its constituent earth abundant elements of differing ionic radii, ideal predicted optoelectronic properties, and demonstrated use in a working thin-film solar cell. However, little is known about ENG's defect properties; such knowledge is necessary to assess its potential for future use in high-efficiency devices. One indicator of a material's quality is its photogenerated carrier lifetime, which can be related to its bulk defect properties. Here, we use a combination of time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy and time-resolved photoluminescence to assess carrier dynamics in ENG thin films processed from nanoparticle precursors. The Shockley–Read–Hall (SRH) lifetimes are on the multi-nanosecond scale, which exceed those reported in more mature systems and represent promising values for a candidate photovoltaic material. These results suggest that ENG is worthy of further research and development effort with an eye toward future photovoltaic applications.

Crystal growth and scintillation properties of pure and Tl-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5

Here, the Bridgman crystal growth and scintillation properties of both undoped and Tl-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 are presented. This material is very attractive for gamma and X-ray detection applications, with a density of 4.53 g/cm 3 and effective atomic number of 51.9. Undoped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 had a light yield of 41,500 photons/MeV, with an energy resolution of 4.4% at 662 keV. Thallium doping at 0.5 mol % resulted in a much-improved scintillation response, in which light yield increased to 98,200 photons/MeV and energy resolution reduced to 3.3% at 662 keV. The X-ray excited emission is centered at 442 nm for the undoped and 500 nm for the Tl-doped crystals. The undoped emission is broad, typical of excitonic emission, while thallium doping results in an even broader band with features of both the undoped and thallium defect-mediated emissions.

Structural Distortions and Short‐Range Magnetism in a Honeycomb Iridate Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6

Layered honeycomb iridates receive significant attention in the materials chemistry and physics fields due to the relevance of their crystal structures to the Kitaev model of a quantum spin liquid (QSL). In quest of liquid‐like magnetic ground state signatures, first‐generation alkali metal iridates A 2 IrO 3 ≡ A 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 (A = Li, Na) and second‐generation iridates T 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 ( T = Cu, Ag, H) are developed. T 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 is synthesized from A 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 via metathesis reactions replacing alkali ions located between honeycomb layers. Herein, the next level of chemical and structural complexity is introduced by synthesizing the honeycomb iridate, Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6 , in which alkali ions between and within the honeycomb layers are both selectively exchanged with two different transition metals. Analysis of powder X‐Ray diffraction data reveals corrugation of the honeycomb layers in Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6 that hinders complete magnetic frustration and results in a spin glass behavior observed from magnetization and specific heat data. Thus, Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6 represents yet another model, which broadens understanding of intricate relationships between intralayer distortions and magnetism of prospective Kitaev QSL compounds.

Variation in supercurrent connectivity and vortex pinning of state-of-the-art pulsed laser deposited RE Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7- x coated conductors

REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x (REBCO, RE: rare earth) coated conductors (CCs) suffer from great critical current I c differences between different manufacturers, I c variations within individual manufacturers, and often significant lengthwise fluctuations. The understanding of such variations is complicated by the lack of a direct correlation between I c and the critical current density J c . In fact, although J c is the fundamental property determined by the local vortex pinning landscape, I c is often limited by variable current blocking mechanisms. An important practical complexity is commercial practices of performing J c and I c evaluations based on I c at 77 K and self-field (sf), where connectivity variation dominates over vortex pinning variations. However, at higher fields and lower temperatures, vortex pinning becomes more complex and highly variable, making predictions of I c and J c at arbitrary temperature T, magnetic field H, and field orientation θ, quite uncertain. To address some aspects of this problem, we conducted detailed spool-to-spool performance characterization on recently manufactured REBCO CCs. Despite J c (77 K, sf) varies by only ∼11%, J c (77 K, 1 T) of its minimum and maximum (for H//ab-plane) show variations of ∼21% and ∼32%, respectively. This emphasizes the shortcoming in using J c (77 K, sf) as parameter for evaluating even the low field performance. An even more remarkable spool-to-spool J c variation of ∼68% was observed at 20 K and 15 T for H//ab-plane. To identify the origin of such lack of reproducibility we performed microstructural characterizations, which revealed, within the REBCO layer, large variation in the density of copper oxide (CuO x ) particles ranging from 0.1 to 2 μm in size. We believe that they play a decisive role in reducing the effective cross-section of the REBCO layer by not simply blocking current themselves, but also by nucleating off-axis REBCO grains, whose misoriented grain boundaries adversely impact REBCO grain-to-grain connectivity. The REBCO growth associated with high density CuO x particles also leads to the more disordered spatial arrangement of BaHfO 3 precipitate arrays, which, when self-aligning along the ab-planes, generate stronger pinning enhancing J c (H//ab) at all temperatures. In this way, we established that variations of both connectivity and vortex pinning are thus directly coupled. Our results also explain why the so-called ‘lift-factor’, typically defined by the ratio between I c (T, H) and I c (77 K, sf), frequently turns out to be unreliable.

Spin-coupling topology in the copper hexamer compounds A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 ( A =Na, K)

The compounds A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 (A=Na,K) are characterized by copper hexamers that are weakly coupled to realize antiferromagnetic order below TN≈3K. They constitute quantum spin systems with S=1 triplet ground states. In this work, we investigated the energy-level splittings of the copper hexamers by inelastic neutron scattering experiments covering the entire range of the magnetic excitation spectra. Additionally, the observed transitions are governed by very unusual selection rules that we ascribe to the underlying spin-coupling topology. This is rationalized by model calculations that allow an unambiguous interpretation of the magnetic excitations concerning both the peak assignments and the nature of the spin-coupling parameters.

Comparing first-principles density functionals plus corrections for the lattice dynamics of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6

The enigmatic mechanism underlying unconventional high-temperature superconductivity, especially the role of lattice dynamics, has remained a subject of debate. Theoretical insights have long been hindered due to the lack of an accurate first-principles description of the lattice dynamics of cuprates. Recently, using the r2SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) functional, we have been able to achieve accurate phonon spectra of an insulating cuprate YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 and discover significant magnetoelastic coupling in experimentally interesting Cu–O bond stretching optical modes [Ning et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 045126 (2023)]. We extend this work by comparing Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof and r2SCAN performances with corrections from the on-site Hubbard U and the D4 van der Waals (vdW) methods, aiming at further understanding on both the materials science side and the density functional side. We demonstrate the importance of vdW and self-interaction corrections for accurate first-principles YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 lattice dynamics. Since r2SCAN by itself partially accounts for these effects, the good performance of r2SCAN is now more fully explained. Finally, in addition, the performances of the Tao–Mo series of meta-GGAs, which are constructed in a different way from the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA and its revised version r2SCAN, are also compared and discussed.

Oxidative control over the morphology of Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 , a 2D conductive metal–organic framework

The morphology of electrically conductive metal–organic frameworks strongly impacts their performance in applications such as energy storage and electrochemical sensing. However, identifying the appropriate conditions needed to achieve a specific nanocrystal size and shape can be a time-consuming, empirical process. Here we show how partial ligand oxidation dictates the morphology of Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene), a prototypical 2D conductive metal–organic framework. Using organic quinones as the chemical oxidant, we demonstrate that partial oxidation of the ligand prior to metal binding alters the nanocrystal aspect ratio by over 60-fold. Systematically varying the extent of initial ligand oxidation leads to distinct rod, block, and flake-like morphologies. These results represent an important advance in the rational control of Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 morphology and motivate future studies into how ligand oxidation impacts the nucleation and growth of 2D conductive metal–organic frameworks.

Enhanced Neutron and γ-Ray Detection via 6 Li Substitution in Undoped and Tl-Doped Zero-Dimensional Perovskite Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 Scintillators

Radiation detectors are crucial in a wide variety of research and commercial applications, such as oil and gas exploration, medical imaging, nuclear nonproliferation, and homeland security. Neutron and gamma-ray detectors are fundamental components in portal monitors at ports and border crossings, bolstering national security against radiological threats. This study presents a dual-mode scintillator, undoped and Tl-doped 6 Li-Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 , and demonstrates its potential as a promising material for simultaneous thermal neutron and gamma-ray detection. We explore the Bridgman growth of both undoped and thallium doped Li → Cu and Li → Cs substitutional systems with various Li doping levels and assess their impact on scintillation properties. Under 662 keV gamma-ray excitation, the undoped crystals had light yields up to 35,900 ph/MeV, with energy resolutions down to 4.5%. The Tl-doped crystals performed better than the undoped crystals with light yields peaking at 65,900 ph/MeV and energy resolutions as low as 3.5%. When exposed to a moderated 252 Cf excitation source, our crystals had light yields between 102,900 and 167,200 photons per thermal neutron capture, with a full energy thermal neutron peak reaching 3 MeV in gamma equivalent energy. Pulse shape discrimination studies reveal well-separated gamma and neutron events, resulting in Figure-Of-Merit (FOM) as high as 3.7. Furthermore, these findings highlight the potential of Li-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 as a viable candidate for next-generation dual-mode scintillators.

Size-controlled synthesis of ultrasmall Cu 3 VS 4 nanocrystals via direct ternary nucleation

Here, we report the size-controlled synthesis of ultrasmall (3–8 nm), phase-pure, and stoichiometric Cu 3 VS 4 nanocrystals via direct nucleation of the ternary sulvanite phase. An unusual redshift in optical absorption is observed with decreasing size and attributed to the plasmonic-like nature of valence band–intermediate band transitions.

Imbalanced spin coupling in the copper hexamer compounds A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 ( A 2 = Na 2 , NaK, K 2 )

The minerals A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 (A 2 = Na 2 ,NaK,K 2 ) constitute quantum spin systems with copper hexamers as basic structural units. Strong intrahexamer spin couplings give rise to an effective triplet ground state. Weak interhexamer spin couplings are responsible for two-dimensional long-range magnetic order in the (b,c) plane below 3.0 < T c < 4.7K. We investigated the magnetic excitations at T = 1.5 K by inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Furthermore, the INS technique was based on the observation of wave vector dependent slices in reciprocal space in order to selectively probe the magnetic signals in different Brillouin zones with different weight. Due to the imbalance of the spin couplings, the data analysis relies on a model in which the interhexamer spin couplings are treated perturbatively on top of the exact S = 1 ground state. The interhexamer spin couplings turn out to be ferromagnetic.

Composition dependence of superconductivity in YBa2(Cu(3-x)Al(x))Oy

Eleven different compositions in the system YBa2(Cu(3-x)Al(x))O(y) (x = 0 to 0.3) have been synthesized and characterized by electrical resistivity measurements, powder x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The superconducting transition temperature T sub c (onset) was almost unaffected by the presence of alumina due to its limited solubility in YBa2Cu3O(7-x). However, T sub c(R = 0) gradually decreased, and the resistive tails became longer with increasing Al2O3 concentration. This was probably due to formation of BaAl2O4 and other impurity phases from chemical decomposition of the superconducting phase by reaction with Al2O3.

Self-Inhibition Phenomena in Cu 3 Pt Oxidation by CO 2

Here, this study investigates the oxidation behavior of Cu 3 Pt(100) in CO 2 using a combination of ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, and density functional theory modeling. Our in situ measurements reveal the simultaneous oxidation and reduction of Cu 2 O due to the opposing effects of atomic oxygen and CO generated from dissociative CO 2 adsorption, leading to a dynamic equilibrium state of simultaneously occurring redox reactions. Complementary atomistic calculations elucidate the inhibitory effects of subsurface Pt enrichment and the counteracting roles of CO 2 and CO in surface oxidation and reduction. These results provide mechanistic insights into the dissociative pathway of CO 2 molecules and dynamic evolution of surface composition and reactivity of Cu-based alloy catalysts in CO 2 -rich environments, with broader implications for tuning gas–surface reactions by manipulating gas reactants or solid surface composition.

In-field strain and temperature measurements in a (RE)Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7–x coil via Rayleigh-backscattering interrogated optical fibers

(RE)Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7-x (REBCO) conductors have overcome technical challenges related to manufacturing quality, length homogeneity, scale-up of piece-length, and joints. There is one remaining technical challenge, however, which is common to all high temperature superconductors and lies in effective detection of failure to prevent material degradation. An innovative technique based on optical fibers interrogated by Rayleigh backscattering has been shown to have advantages over voltage taps at detecting incipient faults. Prior work has experimentally demonstrated the technique in several implementation scenarios, including direct integration of optical fibers into superconducting conductors and cables to create a class of ‘SMART’ conductors and cables that are able to monitor their own health. In this paper, the magnet monitoring technique based on Rayleigh backscattering interrogated optical fibers has been experimentally studied in a model coil subject to external magnetic field, where different fiber integration methods are used to increase selectivity of the fiber sensor to temperature. Results show that the spectral shift displays different features during strain and thermal transients. The implications of the results in terms of potential and limitations of each sensor as well as strain-temperature decoupling are discussed.
