Zeus: Fast-Spectrum Critical Assemblies with a Pb-HEU Core Surrounded by a Copper Reflector

The Zeus experiments with lead (Pb) were a series of measurements performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) in collaboration with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Personnel from the JAEA who assisted with the experiment were Masahiro Fukushima and Akito Oizumi. The measurements were performed by Joetta Goda, Geordie McKenzie, John Bounds, Jessie Walker, Travis Grove, Theresa Cutler, Rene Sanchez, and Jesson Hutchinson from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The purpose of these experiments was to validate Pb nuclear cross sections and Pb void reactivity worth using the Comet critical assembly machine. Plates of highly enriched uranium (HEU) and Pb were arranged in a cylindrical configuration with full copper (Cu) reflection. To study the Pb void reactivity worth, a varying number of cylindrical aluminum (Al) spacers with voids replaced Pb plates in different configurations. Four configurations, which used zero to eight Al spacers, were evaluated as benchmarks.

Space Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Critical Assembly Boron Worth Experiments

The Space Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (SNTP) project was an attempt to create a more powerful and more efficient rocket engine utilizing nuclear technologies. As part of this project a zero-power critical assembly referred to as SNTPCX was designed and installed at Sandia National Laboratories. The SNTP-CX was a light water moderated particle bed reactor utilizing highly enriched uranium fuel in the form of UC particles. The SNTP-CX performed 142 runs covering numerous experiments from the year 1989 to 1992. The program was canceled in 1994 as the nation’s priorities shifted. Now these experiments are being evaluated for use as criticality safety benchmarks. Nineteen of the 142 reactor runs were dedicated to a series of experiments to calculate the worth of the boron used in the light water moderator. This series of experiments has been selected for further evaluation as a critical benchmark for the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP).

Fabrication and Characterization of Plutonium Targets for Irradiation in the Flattop Critical Assembly

In FY16, Pu targets were fabricated in support of the Nuclear Physics: Cumulative Fission Product Yields (Fission R-values) task of the F2016 venture project; these targets are suitable for irradiation in the Flattop critical assembly at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). This report documents an overview of the target design, preparation of the Pu metal materials by removing the oxide layer and appropriate sizing for the target holders, target fabrication including filling an inner aluminum cup with the Pu material and the sealing of an outer stainless steel capsule, target assay using gamma spectroscopy, and the He leak testing of the final targets. Four targets were fabricated with two containing 99% 239 Pu metal and two containing 93% 239 Pu metal. Additional samples of each material were set aside for mass spectrometric analysis at PNNL and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

237 Np Fission Spectrum Cumulative Fission Product Yield Measurement Using Godiva IV Critical Assembly

Precise integral measurement of fast neutron-induced fission product yields for various actinides is of high interest for applied nuclear science. The goal of this effort is to improve uncertainties in fission product yield values of 237 Np. Fission was induced in a NpO 2 (NO 3 ) target using the Godiva IV critical assembly in burst mode. The irradiated sample was transferred to a high-resolution γ-ray detection setup within 50 minutes. γ-ray list mode data was collected from 50 minutes to 1 week after the irradiation. γ-ray spectroscopy was performed to analyze the time dependent γ-ray yields using an automated peak search algorithm to identify isotopes by their decay γ-ray energy and half-life. Finally, the initial activity for each isotope identified was used to calculate their fission product yield.

Monte Carlo Simulations of the Water Draining Experiment of Giacint Critical Assembly

The MCNP6 computer program has been successfully extended to simulate reactor dynamics problems with moving parts of the geometries. Different from the dynamic method developed in other Monte Carlo codes, a movement scheme has been developed to account for the geometrical parts motion during the particle random walk. The MCNP6 computer program has been used to simulate two transient experiments of the Giacint critical assembly. The MCNP6 calculated total neutron flux was compared with that from the Serpent simulation. An excellent agreement was obtained between the results of the two Monte Caro computer programs. The MCNP6 calculated total neutron flux was also compared with the two measured transients. The MCNP6 results predicted a faster transient than the experimental data. The MCNP6 transient simulation was improved with an adjusted geometrical model which shifts the fuel rods slightly to match the measured reactivity worth due to the drained water. New constraint on the Np 237 ( n , γ ) Np 238 integral cross section using the Godiva-IV critical assembly

Accurate knowledge of the 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np cross section at fast neutron energies is important for applied nuclear science. The presently available experimental data has large disagreements in the fast neutron region. Perform a model-independent measurement of the 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np integral cross section using a well characterized fast neutron source and compare the result with previous measurements and current nuclear data evaluations. Provide an integral measurement that can be used as a benchmark for current evaluations. Multiple samples of 237 Np were irradiated in the Godiva-IV critical assembly. Following the irradiation, the samples placed in a γ-ray counting setup and the γ-rays emitted from the decay of 238 Np were measured over a time period of approximately 7 days. Multiple γ-ray decay branches of 238 Np were observed. The observed activity of 238 Np was used to calculate the amount of 238 Np produced during the irradiation via the 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np reaction and an integral cross section of 342(11) mb was measured for the Godiva-IV neutron spectrum. Further, the 238 Np half-life has been measured with a result of 50.31(5) hours. The 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np integral cross section measured in this work is in agreement with overlapping 1σ error bands to ENDF/B-VIII.0. However, the measured value is 3σ away from the calculated integral cross section using JENDL-5. This measurement offers a reliable benchmark for future 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np cross section evaluations.

Yield and PDV Measurements of the Godiva-IV Critical Assembly

A high dynamic range, scinillator based detector, the MHD-240, was used to measure the gamma and neutron flux of several prompt critical bursts of the Godiva-IV assembly. The measurements provided the alpha and FWHM for several different burst temperatures. Calibrations of the MHD240 gamma and neutron sensitivity along with MCNP based simulation of the Godiva-IV assembly allowed us to also determine the total fission yield of the burst integrated over approximately 5 ms. In addition a Photo Doppler Velocimetry measurement was conducted to determine the surface motion vibrational frequency of Godiva-IV assembly during the bursts. The combined data were collected to be used as input to multi-physics simulation of the Godiva-IV assembly. This is a preliminary report, there is an ongoing effort to update the MCNP simulations used in the analysis and develop a correction for the room return component of the measured signal.

Yield and PDV Measurements of the Godiva-IV Critical Assembly (Preliminary Report)

A high dynamic range, scinillator based detector, the MHD-240, was used to measure the gamma and neutron flux of several prompt critical bursts of the Godiva-IV assembly. The measurements provided the alpha and FWHM for several different burst temperatures. Calibrations of the MHD240 gamma and neutron sensitivity along with MCNP based simulation of the Godiva-IV assembly will allow us to also determine the total fission yield of the burst integrated over approximately 5 ms. Work is ongoing to check the calibrations of the MHD-240, and improve the MCNP simulations. This is a preliminary report, and the fission yields reported here are not final and are likely inaccurate. The measured alpha and FWHM are not impacted by the calibration issues and are considered final.

Critical Assemblies: Dragon Burst Assembly and Solution Assemblies

This work reviews the historical literature associated with the Dragon experiment and water boiler reactors operated at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. Frisch’s invited talk given at the American Nuclear Society’s Fast Burst Reactor Conference held at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1969 is quoted. From the literature review, basic models for the Dragon experiment and for a water boiler–type assembly (aqueous homogeneous reactor) were created that can be used for conducting multiphysics simulations for criticality excursion studies. This methodology utilizes the coupled neutronic-hydrodynamic method to perform a time-dependent dynamic simulation of a criticality excursion. MCNP® was utilized to calculate important nuclear kinetic parameters that were incorporated into the models. Simulation results compare reasonably well with historic data.

Photo Doppler Velocimetry and Gamma/Neutron Yield Measurements of Godiva-IV Critical Assembly

The purpose of this experiment was to collect data for a dynamic benchmark of the Godiva-IV burst assembly. Data were taken using two different measurement systems. The gamma & neutron flux was measured using a calibrated, high-dynamic-range scintillator detector, the MHD-240. The measurement will be used to determine the total fission yield and alpha throughout the burst and shutdown sequence of Godiva-IV. The Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) measurement detected the surface motion of the burst assembly as a function of time. The combined data will be used in a multi-physics simulation of the Godiva-IV burst assembly.

Fast-Spectrum Critical Assemblies with a Pb-HEU Core Surrounded by a Copper Reflector

The Department of Energy invests tens of millions of dollars each year to develop the next generation of nuclear engineering modeling & simulation (M&S) tools. These M&S tools are used to analyze advanced reactor designs and the safety of current nuclear operations. As computers become more powerful, we are able to enhance resolution in our calculations. This improved resolution is taking us to a point where the limitations of simulation capability are in the quality of data, including our ability to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivity of the data. In order to accurately model systems of interest, the industry must improve key nuclear data measurements and our confidence of how well we understand the data. Thus, M&S tools need evaluated and quality-assured experimental data for validation purposes. The International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) compiles benchmark experiment data in a handbook that can be used by criticality safety engineers to validate computer codes and cross-section libraries at nuclear facilities. Both critical and subcritical experiments are included in the handbook. Figure 1 organizes all the benchmark evaluations that have been performed by the isotope of interest, in this case Pb, and the neutron energy within the system. Compared to other isotopes of interest for nuclear applications, there are few benchmark evaluations for Pb systems. This has caused the latest nuclear cross-section libraries to over/underestimate changes in the neutron population compared to experimental results. Therefore, this evaluation fills an important knowledge gap in benchmark evaluations.
