Design and Measurement of Self-Matched, Dual-Frequency Coplanar-Waveguide-Fed Slot Antennas

This report presents two new designs of dual-frequency, coplanar-waveguide-fed, double-folded slot antennas. An important advantage of these antennas is that, because they are self-matched to the feeding coplanar waveguide, they do not need an external matching circuit. This reduces the antenna size and simplifies its design. To verify the designs, the authors measured and compared the return loss and radiation patterns with those obtained using available commercial software with good agreement. High Temperature Characteristics of Coplanar Waveguide on R-Plane Sapphire and Alumina

This paper presents the characteristics of coplanar waveguide transmission lines on R-plane sapphire and alumina over the temperature range of 25 to 400 C and the frequency range of 45 MHz to 50 GHz. A Thru-Reflect-Line calibration technique and open circuited terminated stubs are used to extract the attenuation and effective permittivity. It is shown that the effective permittivity of the transmission lines and, therefore, the relative dielectric constant of the two substrates increase linearly with temperature. The attenuation of the coplanar waveguide varies linearly with temperature through 200 C, and increases at a greater rate above 200 C.

Broadside-coupled coplanar waveguides and their end-coupled band-pass filter applications

New broadside-coupled coplanar waveguides, suitable for applications requiring wide bandwidths, tight couplings, and large mode effective-dielectric-constant ratios, are presented. Their analysis and investigation are described. Simple equations relating the per-unit-length capacitances of the c- and pi-modes and the per-unit-length capacitance matrices of the coupled structures to those obtained when applying even- and odd-symmetric voltages are also derived. New broadside end-coupled band-pass filters have been developed at X-band (8-12 GHz) with less than 1.5 and 1.0 dB passband insertion losses using the proposed four-ground-plane and two-ground-plane coplanar waveguide structures, respectively. Good agreement between the experimental results and those predicted theoretically was also observed.

New channelised coplanar waveguide to rectangular waveguide post and slot couplers

Two new coplanar waveguide to rectangular waveguide couplers with coupling through a post and a slot are experimentally demonstrated. The couplers operate over the Ku-band transmission and X-band reception frequencies that are designated for satellite communications. The measured insertion loss and return loss are about 1 dB, respectively, for both couplers.

Electromagnetic coupling between coplanar waveguide and microstrip antennas

Electromagnetic coupling between coplanar waveguides (CPW) and microstrip patch antennas has been investigated for two feed configurations: (1) direct aperture-coupled feeding of a patch antenna by a CPW feed, and (2) proximity-coupled feeding of a patch antenna by a microstrip line which is aperture-coupled to a CPW feed. Results indicate that both feeding approaches are feasible and yield high coupling efficiency.

Coplanar waveguide feed for microstrip patch antennas

A coplanar waveguide (CPW) loop is shown to be an effective low VSWR feed for microstrip antennas. The low VSWR transition between the CPW and the antenna is obtained without the use of a matching circuit, and it is relatively insensitive to the position of the antenna and the feed.

Characterization of Asymmetric Coplanar Waveguide Discontinuities

A general technique to characterize asymmetric coplanar waveguide (CPW) discontinuities with air bridges where both the fundamental coplanar and slotline modes may be excited together is presented. First, the CPW discontinuity without air bridges is analyzed using the space-domain integral equation (SDIE) approach. Second, the parameters (phase, amplitude, and wavelength) of the coplanar and slotline modes are extracted from an amplitude modulated-like standing wave existing in the CPW feeding lines. Then a 2n x 2n generalized scattering matrix of the n-port discontinuity without air bridges is derived which includes the occurring mode conversion. Finally, this generalized scattering matrix is reduced to an n x n matrix by enforcing suitable conditions at the ports which correspond to the excited slotline mode. For the purpose of illustration, the method is applied to a shielded asymmetric short-end CPW shunt stub, the scattering parameters of which are compared with those of a symmetric one. Experiments are performed on both discontinuities and the results are in good agreement with theoretical data. The advantages of using air bridges in CPW circuits as opposed to bond wires are also discussed.

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide resonators of Y-Ba-Cu-O and Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O on LaAlO3

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW) resonators operating at 10.8 GHz have been fabricated from Tl-Ba-Ca-O (TBCCO) and Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) thin films on LaAlO3. The resonators consist of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) patterned on the superconducting film side of the LaAlO3 substrate with a gold ground plane coated on the opposite side. These resonators were tested in the temperature range from 14 to 106 K. At 77 K, the best of our TBCCO and YBCO resonators have an unloaded quality factor (Qo) 7 and 4 times, respectively, larger than that of a similar all-gold resonator. In this study, the Qo's of the TBCCO resonators were larger than those of their YBCO counterparts throughout the aforementioned temperature range.

Electromagnetic Modeling of Distributed-Source-Excitation of Coplanar Waveguides: Applications to Traveling-Wave Photomixers

In this work an electromagnetic model and subsequent design is presented for a traveling-wave, coplanar waveguide (CPW) based source that will operate in the THz frequency regime. The radio frequency (RF) driving current is a result of photoexcitation of a thin GaAs membrane using two frequency-offset lasers. The GaAs film is grown by molecular-beam-epitaxy (MBE) and displays sub-ps carrier lifetimes which enable the material conductivity to be modulated at a very high rate. The RF current flows between electrodes deposited on the GaAs membrane which are biased with a DC voltage source. The electrodes form a CPW and are terminated with a double slot antenna that couples the power to a quasi-optical system. The membrane is suspended above a metallic reflector to launch all radiation in one direction. The theoretical investigation and consequent design is performed in two steps. The first step consists of a direct evaluation of the magnetic current distribution on an infinitely extended coplanar waveguide excited by an impressed electric current distributed over a finite area. The result of the analysis is the difference between the incident angle of the laser beams and the length of the excited area that maximizes the RF power coupled to the CPW. The optimal values for both parameters are found as functions of the CPW and membrane dimensions as well as the dielectric constants of the layers. In the second step, a design is presented of a double slot antenna that matches the CPW characteristic impedance and gives good overall performance. The design is presently being implemented and measurements will soon be available.

A comparative study between shielded and open coplanar waveguide discontinuities

A comparative study between open and shielded coplanar waveguide (CPW) discontinuities is presented. The space domain integral equation method is used to characterize several discontinuities such as the open-end CPW and CPW series stubs. Two different geometries of CPW series stubs (straight and bent stubs) are compared with respect to resonant frequency and radiation loss. In addition, the encountered radiation loss due to different CPW shunt stubs is evaluated experimentally. The notion of forced radiation simulation is presented, and the results of such a simulation are compared to the actual radiation loss obtained rigorously. It is shown that such a simulation cannot give reliable results concerning radiation loss from printed circuits.

Novel Coplanar Waveguide to Slotline Transition on High Resistivity Silicon

Two novel coplanar waveguide (CPW) to slotline transitions have been fabricated and tested on high resistivity silicon. The first transition uses an air bridge to couple RF power from the CPW line to the slotline and has the entire circuit on the top side of the wafer. In the second transition, the grounded CPW line and the slotline are on opposite sides of the wafer and are coupled electromagnetically. The measured average intersection loss and return loss per transition are better than 1.5 and 10 dB, respectively, with a bandwidth greater than 30 percent at C-band frequencies.

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide resonators of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) on LaAlO3

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW) resonators operating at 10.8 GHz have been fabricated from laser ablated and off-axis magnetron sputtered YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) high-temperature superconducting (HTS) thin films on LaAlO3. These resonators were tested in the temperature range from 14 to 92 K. The unloaded quality factor at 77 K of the HTS CBCPW resonators was 3 to 4 times that of a similar gold resonator. To the authors' knowledge, these results represent the first reported measurements of HTS-based CBCPW resonators.

Conductor-Backed Superconductive Coplanar-Waveguide Resonators

Report describes comparative tests of conductor-backed coplanar-waveguide resonators with design resonant frequency of 10.8 GHz. Dielectric layers in resonators made of LaAIO3 and conductive ground planes on back surfaces of dielectric layers made of gold. TI/Ba/Ca/Cu/O and Y/Ba/Cu/O units performed better than all-gold-conductor unit did, at all but highest temperatures. Results suggest TI/Ba/Ca/Cu/O may be material of choice for cryogenic microwave applications.

Propagation characteristics of some novel coplanar waveguide transmission lines on GaAs at MM-wave frequencies

Three new Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) transmission lines, namely, Suspended CPW (SCPW), Stripline-like Suspended CPW (SSCPW) and Inverted CPW (ICPW), are proposed and also analyzed for their propagation characteristics. The substrate thickness, permittivity and dimensions of housing are assumed to be arbitrary. These structures have the following advantages over conventional CPW. Firstly, the ratio of guide wavelength to free space wavelength is closer to unity which results in larger dimensions and hence lower tolerances. Secondly, the effective dielectric constant is lower and hence the electromagnetic field energies are concentrated more in the air regions which should reduce attenuation. Thirdly, for a prescribed impedance level, the above structures have a wider slot width for identical strip width. Thus, low impedance lines can be achieved with reasonable slot dimensions. Fourthly, in an inverted CPW shunt mounting of active devices, such as Gunn and IMPATT diodes, between the strip and the metal trough is possible. This feature further enhances the attractiveness of the above structures. Lastly, an E-plane probe type transition from a rectangular waveguide to suspended CPW can also be easily realized. The computed results for GaAs at Ka-band illustrate the variation of normalized guide wavelength, effective dielectric constant and the characteristic impedance as a function of the: (1) frequency; (2) distance of separation between the trough side walls; (3) normalized strip and slot widths; and (4) normalized air gap.
