Dihadron correlations in small- x DIS at NLO: transverse momentum dependent fragmentation

We compute the inclusive dihadron cross-section in Deep Inelastic Scattering at next-to-leading order (NLO) and small x in the Color Glass Condensate. We focus on the kinematic limit where the hadrons are produced at forward rapidities (in the direction of the virtual photon) and back-to-back in the transverse plane. Our calculation demonstrates that the coefficient of the Sudakov double logarithm for this process is –$\frac{αs}{2π}$ [C F + $\frac{Nc}{2}$] instead of –$\frac{αsNc}{4π}$ when back-to-back jets are measured in the final state. To preserve the universality of the Sudakov soft factor associated with the Weizsäcker-Williams transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon distribution, we promote the collinear fragmentation functions into TMD fragmentation functions. We then perform the resummation of the Sudakov logarithms through Collins-Soper-Sterman evolution of the TMD fragmentation functions and the Weizsäcker-Williams TMD gluon distribution. Finally, analytic expressions are obtained for the NLO coefficient functions in the $\overline{MS}$-scheme. These results pave the way towards numerically calculating dihadron correlations at small x at the future Electron-Ion Collider with full NLO accuracy.

Characterizing the initial conditions of heavy-ion collisions at the LHC with mean transverse momentum and anisotropic flow correlations

Correlations between mean transverse momentum [pT] and anisotropic flow coefficients v 2 or v 3 are measured as a function of centrality in Pb–Pb and Xe–Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV and 5.44 TeV, respectively, with ALICE. In addition, the recently proposed higher-order correlation between [p T ], v 2 , and v 3 is measured for the first time, which shows an anticorrelation for the presented centrality ranges. These measurements are compared with hydrodynamic calculations using IP-Glasma and T R ENTo initialstate shapes, the former based on the Color Glass Condensate effective theory with gluon saturation, and the latter a parameterized model with nucleons as the relevant degrees of freedom. The data are better described by the IP-Glasma rather than the T R ENTo based calculations. In particular, Trajectum and JETSCAPE predictions, both based on the T R ENTo initial state model but with different parameter settings, fail to describe the measurements. As the correlations between [p T ] and v n are mainly driven by the correlations of the size and the shape of the system in the initial state, these new studies pave a novel way to characterize the initial state and help pin down the uncertainty of the extracted properties of the quark–gluon plasma recreated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Probing nuclear structure at the Electron-Ion Collider and in ultra-peripheral nuclear collisions

Within the Color Glass Condensate framework, we demonstrate that exclusive vector meson production at high energy is sensitive to the geometric deformation of the target nucleus and subnucleon scale fluctuations. Deformation of the nucleus enhances the incoherent cross section in the small |t| region. Subnucleon scale fluctuations increase the incoherent cross section in the large |t| region. In ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs), larger deformation leads to a wider distribution of the minimal impact parameter B min required to produce a UPC. This, together with larger incoherent cross sections for larger deformation, results in smaller extracted radii. Our results demonstrate great potential for future studies of nuclear structure in UPCs and electron-ion collisions.

Wee partons in QCD and gravity: Double copy and universality

We discuss a quantitative “double copy” between radiation from shockwave collisions in Einstein gravity and in QCD. The correspondence extends to 2 → N amplitudes in Regge asymptotics. The classicalization and unitarization of these amplitudes at maximal occupancy, corresponding to black hole and Color Glass Condensate (CGC) states respectively, are described by the emergent Goldstone dynamics of wee partons. We outline some consequences of the universal dynamics on both sides of the correspondence.

Investigating the broadening phenomenon in two-particle correlations induced by gluon saturation

It has been found that the gluon density inside the proton grows rapidly at small momentum fractions. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that this growth can be regulated by nonlinear effects, ultimately leading to gluon saturation. Within the color glass condensate framework, nonlinear QCD effects are predicted to suppress and broaden back-to-back angular correlations in collisions involving heavy nuclei. While suppression has been observed in various experiments in 𝑑/𝑝 + A collisions compared to 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions, the predicted broadening remains unobserved. This study investigates the contributions of intrinsic transverse momentum (𝑘 𝑇 ), which is associated with saturation physics, as well as parton showers and transverse motion from fragmentation (𝑝$^{frag}_{𝑇}$), which are not saturation dependent, to the width of the correlation function. Our findings show that the non-saturation dependent effects, especially the initial-state parton shower and 𝑝$^{frag}_{𝑇}$, which occur independently of the collision system, smear the back-to-back correlation more than gluon saturation does, making the broadening phenomenon difficult to observe.

Collision-Energy Dependence in Heavy-Ion Collisions from Nonlinear QCD Evolution

We explore the effects of including the energy dependence determined from evolution equations within the color glass condensate framework on observables in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. This amounts to integrating the JIMWLK evolution equations into the impact parameter-dependent glasma model, which is then coupled to viscous relativistic hydrodynamics. This methodology allows for a systematic representation of nuclei at specific Bjorken-x values, which are probed at different center-of-mass energies of the collision and rapidities of final state particles. Comparing the methodology to the conventional impact parameter-dependent glasma model, we find significant effects on multiplicity distributions and particle spectra, especially in smaller collision systems at the highest center-of-mass energies. Our results highlight the importance of incorporating nonlinear QCD evolution in the description of heavy-ion collisions at varying center-of-mass energies, as the precise extraction of transport coefficients will be affected. This Letter establishes a robust framework for understanding the quark gluon plasma and nuclear structure at high energy, integrating small-x physics into the initial conditions of heavy-ion collisions.

Measurement of 𝐷 0 Meson Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions

This Letter reports the first measurement of photonuclear 𝐷 0 meson production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions. The study is performed using lead-lead collision data, with an integrated luminosity of 1.34 nb −1 , collected by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.36 TeV. Photonuclear events, where one of the colliding nuclei breaks up and the other remains intact, are selected based on breakup neutron emissions and by requiring no particle activity in a large rapidity interval in the direction of the photon-emitting nucleus. The 𝐷 0 mesons are reconstructed via the 𝐷 0 → 𝐾 −⁢ 𝜋 + decay channel, with the cross section measured as a function of 𝐷 0 meson transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations that employ recent parametrizations of the lead nuclear parton distribution functions, as well as with predictions based on the color glass condensate framework. This measurement is the first photonuclear collision study characterizing parton distribution functions of lead nuclei for parton fractional momenta 𝑥 (relative to the nucleon) ranging approximately from a few 10 −4 to 10 −2 for different hard energy scale 𝑄 2 selections.

Global Bayesian analysis of J/𝜓 photoproduction on proton and lead targets

We perform a global Bayesian analysis of diffractive J/𝜓 production in 𝛾 + 𝑝 and 𝛾 + Pb collisions using a color glass condensate (CGC) based calculation framework. As past calculations have shown that CGC-based models typically overpredict the J/𝜓 production in 𝛾 + Pb collisions at high center of mass energy, we address the question of whether it is possible to describe coherent and incoherent diffractive J/𝜓 data from 𝛾 + 𝑝 collisions at Hadron–Electron Ring Accelerator (HERA) and the LHC, and from 𝛾 + Pb collisions at the LHC simultaneously. Our results indicate that a simultaneous description of 𝛾 + 𝑝 and 𝛾 + Pb data is challenging, with results improving when an overall 𝐾-factor—scaling 𝛾 + 𝑝 and 𝛾 + Pb cross sections to absorb model uncertainties—is introduced.

Effects of nuclear structure and quantum interference on diffractive vector meson production in ultra-peripheral nuclear collisions

Here we study diffractive vector meson production in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) of heavy nuclei, utilizing a theoretical framework based on the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) formalism. We focus on Au + Au, U + U, Ru + Ru, Zr + Zr, and Pb + Pb collisions, examining the transverse momentum dependence of vector meson production cross-sections and co s(2ΔΦ)asymmetries in the decay product distributions to explore the role of nuclear geometry. The angular modulation is due to the linear polarization of the incoming photons and quantum interference effects. We extract nuclear radii and find them to be consistent with experimental data from the STAR collaboration. The amplitudes of the cos(2ΔΦ)modulation in the cross-section and the extracted radii depend on the nuclear geometry. This dependence is dominated by the geometry-dependent variation of the minimum impact parameter required for ultra-peripheral collisions.

Exclusive J / ψ , ψ ( 2 s ) , and e + e - pair production in Au + Au ultraperipheral collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

Measurements of exclusive J/ψ, ψ(2⁢s), and electron-positron (e + ⁢e - ) pair photoproduction in Au+Au ultraperipheral collisions are reported by the STAR experiment at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200GeV. Here, we report several first measurements at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, which are (i) J/ψ photoproduction with large momentum transfer up to 2.2⁢(GeV/c) 2 , (ii) coherent J/ψ photoproduction associated with neutron emissions from nuclear breakup, (iii) the rapidity dependence of incoherent J/ψ photoproduction, (iv) the ψ⁡(2⁢s) photoproduction cross section at midrapidity, and (v) e + ⁢e - pair photoproduction up to high invariant mass of 6GeV/c 2 . For measurement (ii), the coherent J/ψ total cross section of γ + Au → J/ψ + Au as a function of the center-of-mass energy W γN has been obtained without photon energy ambiguities. The data are quantitatively compared with the Monte Carlo models STARlight, Sartre, BeAGLE, and theoretical calculations of gluon saturation with color glass condensate, nuclear shadowing with leading twist approximation, quantum electrodynamics, and the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD. At the photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 25.0 GeV, the coherent and incoherent J/ψ cross sections of Au nuclei are found to be 71% ± 10% and 36% ± 7%, respectively, of that of free protons. These data provide an important experimental constraint for nuclear parton distribution functions and a unique opportunity to advance the understanding of the nuclear modification effect at the top RHIC energy.

SIDIS at small x at next-to-leading order: Gluon contribution

We calculate the contribution of gluons to single inclusive hadron production at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small x using the color glass condensate formalism. It is shown that the only divergence present is the standard collinear divergence, which is absorbed into scale evolution of quark-hadron fragmentation function. Our calculations are performed at finite N c and we provide general finite N c expressions for the structure of Wilson lines appearing in inclusive dihadron and single hadron production cross sections. We also comment on how one can obtain rapidity distribution of hadron multiplicities from our results. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Energy dependent nuclear suppression from gluon saturation in exclusive vector meson production

We calculate exclusive J / ψ photoproduction at high energies in the color glass condensate approach. The results are compared to the center-of-mass energy dependent γ + A → J / ψ + A cross sections extracted from measurements in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We predict strong saturation-driven nuclear suppression at high energies, while LHC data prefer even stronger suppression. We explore effects of nucleon shaped fluctuations and show that the most recent measurement of the | t | -differential incoherent J / ψ cross section prefers large event-by-event fluctuations of the nucleon substructure in heavy nuclei, comparable to that found for a free proton. Finite-size effects on small- x evolution and saturation in proton and nuclear targets

Within the color glass condensate effective field theory, we assess the importance of including a finite size for the target on observables sensitive to small- x evolution. To this end, we study the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation with impact-parameter dependence in the initial condition. We demonstrate that neglecting the dependence on the impact parameter can result in overestimated saturation effects for protons, while it has little effect for heavy nuclei at the energies available at current experiments. When fixing the nonperturbative parameters to the energy dependence of the exclusive J / ψ photoproduction cross section with proton targets, predictions for lead targets are not sensitive to the applied running-coupling prescription, the scheme chosen to resum large transverse logarithms in the BK equation, or the infrared regulator in the evolution. Multiscale Imaging of Nuclear Deformation at the Electron-Ion Collider

We show within the Color Glass Condensate framework that exclusive vector meson production at high energy is sensitive to the geometric deformation of the target nucleus at multiple length scales. Studying e+U collisions and varying the deformation of the uranium target, we demonstrate that larger deformations result in enhanced incoherent vector meson production cross sections. Further, different multipole deformation parameters affect different regions of transverse momentum transfer. Employing JIMWLK evolution to study the Bjorken-x dependence of our results, we find that the ratio of incoherent to coherent cross sections decreases with decreasing x, largely independently of the quadrupole deformation of the target. Comparing results for the same process using 20 Ne targets with 16 O targets, we find that differences in deformation are clearly visible in the incoherent cross section. These findings show that certain observables at the Electron-Ion Collider are very sensitive to nuclear structure. Consequently, deformations need to be taken into account when interpreting experimental results. More importantly, this also means that |t|-differential diffractive vector meson production could become a powerful tool, enabling the most direct measurements of nuclear structure at different length scales, ranging from nuclear deformation at low |t| to nucleon and subnucleon-size scales at higher |t|.

Back-to-Back Inclusive Dijets in Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small x : Complete NLO Results and Predictions

We compute the back-to-back dijet cross section in deep inelastic scattering at small x to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the color glass condensate effective field theory. Our result can be factorized into a convolution of the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution function (WW gluon TMD) with a universal soft factor and an NLO coefficient function. The soft factor includes both double and single logarithms in the ratio of the relative transverse momentum P ⊥ of the dijet pair to the dijet momentum imbalance q ⊥ ; its renormalization group (RG) evolution is resummed into the Sudakov factor. Likewise, the WW TMD obeys a nonlinear RG equation in x that is kinematically constrained to satisfy both the lifetime and rapidity ordering of the projectile. Exact analytical expressions are obtained for the NLO coefficient function of transversely and longitudinally polarized photons. Our results allow for the first quantitative separation of the dynamics of Sudakov suppression from that of gluon saturation. They can be extended to other final states and provide a framework for precision tests of novel QCD many-body dynamics at the Electron-Ion Collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Jet Definition and Transverse-Momentum–Dependent Factorization in Semi-inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering

Using the color dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and the color glass condensate effective theory, we study semi-inclusive jet production in DIS at small x in the limit where the photon virtuality Q 2 is much larger than the transverse momentum squared P$^{2}_{⊥}$ of the produced jet. In this limit, the cross section is dominated by aligned jet configurations, that is, quark–antiquark pairs in which one of the fermions—the would-be struck quark in the Breit frame—carries most of the longitudinal momentum of the virtual photon. We show that physically meaningful jet definitions in DIS are such that the effective axis of the jet sourced by the struck quark is controlled by its virtuality rather than by its transverse momentum. For such jet definitions, we show that the next-to-leading order cross section admits factorization in terms of the (sea) quark transverse momentum dependent distribution, which in turn satisfies a universal Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi and Sudakov evolution.

SIDIS at small 𝑥 at next-to-leading order: Transverse photon

We calculate the next-to-leading order corrections to single inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering at small 𝑥 using the color glass condensate formalism, for the case when the exchanged photon is transversely polarized. We show all UV and soft divergences cancel while collinear and rapidity divergences result in scale evolution of quark-hadron fragmentation function and small-x evolution of dipole amplitudes, respectively.
