Lanczos Algorithm, the Transfer Matrix, and the Signal-to-Noise Problem

This Letter introduces a method for determining the energy spectrum of lattice quantum chromodynamics by applying the Lanczos algorithm to the transfer matrix and using a bootstrap generalization of the Cullum-Willoughby method to filter out spurious eigenvalues. Proof-of-principle analyses of the simple harmonic oscillator and the lattice quantum chromodynamics proton mass demonstrate that this method provides faster ground-state convergence than the “effective mass,” which is related to the power-iteration algorithm. Lanczos provides more accurate energy estimates than multistate fits to correlation functions with small imaginary times while achieving comparable statistical precision. Two-sided error bounds are computed for Lanczos results and guarantee that excited-state effects cannot shift Lanczos results far outside their statistical uncertainties.

Cold-atom quantum simulator for string and hadron dynamics in non-Abelian lattice gauge theory

We propose an analog quantum simulator for simulating real-time dynamics of (1+1)-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory well within the existing capacity of ultracold-atom experiments. The scheme calls for the realization of a two-state ultracold fermionic system in a one-dimensional bipartite lattice, and the observation of subsequent tunneling dynamics. Being based on the loop string hadron formalism of SU(2) lattice gauge theory, this simulation technique is completely SU(2) invariant and simulates accurate dynamics of physical phenomena such as string breaking and/or pair production. The scheme is scalable and particularly effective in simulating the theory in the weak-coupling regime, and also a bulk limit of the theory in the strong-coupling regime up to certain approximations. This paper also presents a numerical benchmark comparison of the exact spectrum and real-time dynamics of lattice gauge theory to that of the atomic Hamiltonian with an experimentally realizable range of parameters.

Measurement of Charged-Pion Production in Deep-Inelastic Scattering off Nuclei with the CLAS Detector

Background: Energetic quarks in nuclear deep-inelastic scattering propagate through the nuclear medium. Processes that are believed to occur inside nuclei include quark energy loss through medium-stimulated gluon bremsstrahlung and intranuclear interactions of forming hadrons. More data are required to gain a more complete understanding of these effects. Purpose: To test the theoretical models of parton transport and hadron formation, we compared their predictions for the nuclear and kinematic dependence of pion production in nuclei. Methods: We have measured charged-pion production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off D, C, Fe, and Pb using the CLAS detector and the CEBAF 5.014-GeV electron beam. We report results on the nuclear-to-deuterium multiplicity ratio for π + and π - as a function of energy transfer, four-momentum transfer, and pion energy fraction or transverse momentum—the first three-dimensional study of its kind. Results: The π + multiplicity ratio is found to depend strongly on the pion fractional energy z and reaches minimum values of 0.67 ± 0.03, 0.43 ± 0.02, and 0.27 ± 0.01 for the C, Fe, and Pb targets, respectively. The z dependencies of the multiplicity ratios for π + and π - are equal within uncertainties for C and Fe targets but show differences at the level of 10% for the Pb-target data. The results are qualitatively described by the GIBUU transport model, as well as with a model based on hadron absorption, but are in tension with calculations based on nuclear fragmentation functions. Conclusions: These precise results will strongly constrain the kinematic and flavor dependence of nuclear effects in hadron production, probing an unexplored kinematic region. They will help to reveal how the nucleus reacts to a fast quark, thereby shedding light on its color structure and transport properties and on the mechanisms of the hadronization process.

Deep exclusive meson production as a probe to the puzzle of Λ hyperon polarization

In the 1970s, an unexpected transverse Λ polarization in unpolarized proton-beryllium collisions was discovered, which initiated extensive studies on spin phenomena in high-energy physics. Over the past five decades, similar transverse Λ polarization has been observed across various collision systems, including lepton-hadron deep-inelastic scattering, hadron-hadron collisions, and electron-positron collisions. Despite numerous promising theoretical models, the fundamental mechanism underlying this polarization phenomenon remains inconclusive to this day. However, in both longitudinally and transversely polarized lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collisions, it is found that the Λ hyperon is polarized with respect to the initial parton spin direction. How the Λ hyperon acquires its spin has become one of the most crucial questions to address in order to resolve this puzzle. In this paper, I propose to use an exclusive process that can be measured at the Electron-Ion Collider, the deep exclusive meson production, to explicitly test the mechanism of Λ polarization. The outcomes of this experimental measurement are anticipated to unveil the dominant mechanism by which Λ obtains its spin, eliminating many of the ambiguities that have been encountered in previous studies. Finally, experimental challenges and requirements are discussed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Fine structure of pentaquark multiplets in the dynamical diquark model

In this work, we apply the dynamical diquark model to predict the spectrum of hidden-charm pentaquark states in both unflavored and open-strange sectors. Using only Hamiltonian parameters introduced in the tetraquark S - and P -wave multiplets, the model naturally produces the level spacing supported by the most recent LHCb results for P c structures. Furthermore, using model inputs obtained from data of hidden-charm, open-strange tetraquarks ( Z c s ), we predict the spectrum of P c s states, including the recently observed P c s ( 4459 ) . We find all pentaquark candidates observed to date to belong to the 1 P multiplet and hence have positive parity.

Extraction of the higher-twist parton distribution $e(x)$ from CLAS data

We present the first point-by-point extraction of a twist-3 PDF. The scalar PDF, e(x), is accessed through the analysis of the data for the sin φR-moment of the beam-spin asymmetry for dihadron production in semi-inclusive DIS off proton target at CLAS and CLAS12. The dihadron formalism allows for use of collinear framework, hence calling for a minimal set of approximations and hypotheses. The extracted PDF e(x) carries insights into the physics of the largely-unexplored quark-gluon correlations, and its first Mellin moment is related to the marginally known scalar charge of the nucleon. We show that the proton flavor combination of the scalar PDF is nonzero at more than 74% probability.
